Our Forgotten Love

Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Nov 25, 2018

When Xuehua was little, she often tagged along with her grandmother to the Medicine Grove to pick herbs for Taotao who always loved to climb trees and wrestle with the boys. Xuehua, in order to help Taotao, spent most of her time learning the names and uses of these herbs and has even been appointed by Ma Huang, the elder doctor, as his apprentice. So when Xuehua heard the words coming from the Immortal’s mouth, she was dumbfounded. The outside world is instead dangerous, she thought. Even a tree can kill a person! Xuehua looked at the tree that poisoned her. Her voice was rough, and asked in a straightforward manner, “Is there an antidote?” Xuehua has dropped all formalities and etiquette. If she is going to die, then it is pointless to put up an act. She clutched the fabric of her dress, feeling dizzy and weary already. Her delicate feature scrunch up into a frown.

Heyang looks at the small fairy and smirks. It seems like she actually believed in him. He cleared his throat, drawing her attention, “There is an antidote.” His soft voice hits Xuehua like a stone.

The moment she heard those four words her entire face lit up. She had some hope, Xuehua excitedly thought. She continues to keep silent, waiting for the Immortal to talk.

He paused and looked at her now beaming face that was blanched-white only seconds before. He found her to be a strange girl. She can act cold and aloof but also warm and gentle. He continues his sentence after a little pause. “The antidote for this particular tree can only be found on Yunqiao Mountain. It is a rare scarlet flower that only blooms during a full moon.” He paused again carefully watching her reaction, his arms folded behind him. She mentioned that she comes from Green-Bell Valley. She probably doesn’t know much about this world, he thought.

Xuehua didn’t believe her luck. The full moon had just past a few days ago. If she waited for the next full moon wouldn’t she be dead already? She dazedly looked at the poisonous tree, feeling as if the ground was spinning. If she could she would set the tree on fire right now. Damn tree!! She cursed from the bottom of her heart. “What the hell do I do now,” she gave a deadpan statement, forgetting about the Immortal standing in front of her. Xuehua was angry. So angry that she stomped over to the tree and kicked a fallen old branch with all her might. The first branch flew upwards and disappeared among the other trees. Xuehua then turned around swiftly and kicked another branch. This time the branch flew directly for the High Immortal, hitting him right on his shoulder. Xuehua froze, her limbs completely petrified. At the same time, the sky darkened and thundered, flashes of lightning and raindrops fell down directly on the forest. In an instant, Xuehua was soaked from head to toe. She raised her hands to shield her eyes from the rain, gasping for breath as the cold wind hits her. Now she is cold and near death’s door. Xuehua was at a lost, she didn't know what to do or say. She pinched her outer thigh, but she still couldn't bring herself to move. Should she apologize or turn around and run? Xuehua carefully considered both options. Maybe he didn’t notice the branch, she thought. Perhaps she should just act as if nothing happened.

Heyang was amused by the fairy's reaction. Most people would immediately kneel on the ground if they did anything to offend him, but this girl stands and even dares to stare directly at him. The rain beats down onto the ground but Heyang is shielded so not one drop has touched him. Xuehua, on the other hand, is trembling from the chilly wind and heavy rain. Heyang’s heart softens considerably as he watches the rain drip down the fairy’s delicate face. He reaches over, grabbing her wrist and pulls her into the force field. Unlike the cold and harsh weather outside, Heyang’s force shield is created with his celestial energy and is warm and comfortable. Xuehua sighs, immediate comforted by the warm air. But Xuehua’s clothing and hair were still both soaked and she was hit by the chilliness once again. Xuehua’s body instinctively looks for warmth, which happens to emit from the High Immortal. Standing in the rain, Xuehua felt as if her head was drowning in water. She didn’t care for anything except for the comfortable warmth, and hazily grabbed Heyang’s shoulders and pulled him towards her. Xuehua wrapped her arms around Heyang’s neck and rested her head on his shoulders. Sighing contently, the warmth lulls Xuehua to sleep.

Heyang was surprised. He was dumbfounded. He never expected the fairy to be so bold. Heyang wrapped his arms around Xuehua’s waist, bending over so she can easily hold him. After a few seconds, Heyang felt Xuehua’s arm loosening as her eyes began to close. He immediately picked her up, so she wouldn’t fall. Heyang notices the coldness of Xuehua’s dress and frowns. If she continues to wear the dress, she is definitely going to be sick. He presses Xuehua closer to his body.

“Guards,” Heyang calls out into the air, in a commanding voice.

Suddenly, four celestial guards dressed in armor appear in a wisp of fog. All of them kneel in front of the High Immortal, silently waiting for his orders. None dare to look directly at His Eminence.

“I’m returning,” Heyang says, his eyes never leaving the sleeping fairy in his arms.
