I had to go to school the next week. My hair was a complete mess. My vision was hazy and I had dark circles under my eyes. I guess you could say that I didn't get enough sleep. I just kept thinking about mom and Nathaniel and everything that was happening.
Hawke brought up Wilson's brother again. I can't remember his name. Hawke speculated that maybe he fell and broke his neck. When I asked what he fell from, he said the edge of where he was walking. There was a small ditch next to the road, close to our house. It just left me more confused. Maybe he would have climbed up there and died? But, how that could happen was the problem. It just didn't make sense.
I fell asleep twice in math. The teacher was concerned and asked if I wanted to see the school counselor. I said, no, thanks, sir. I already had other classes I needed to get to. I don't have time to sit around and chat with an adult who thinks she knows me.
The school counselor is really nice. She's a redhead, with soft green eyes. She always wears a frilly pink shirt to work. Kids usually stop by her office for the butterscotch that is kept in a jar on her desk. People just like her, I guess.
When I got to lunch, I sat against the wall. I sighed and stared out into the crowd, waiting for the others. Hawke came around with Wilson, a scowl on his face as usual. I already knew the reason. Wilson's brother's death has been on Hawke's mind for months. It just wasn't fair that others didn't get what was going on in his mind. At least, that's what Hawke thinks.
