Our Forgotten Love

Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Nov 25, 2018

10 days ago, there was a disturbance in the eastern seas in the palace of the Water Dragon Clan. A bright light emitted from High Immortal Mozi’s body and soared through the 36 Heavens, searching endlessly, causing a ruckus and frightening the deities of the fairy realms. The Heavenly King, hearing of the worries of the various clans, sent troops to capture the mysterious light but it disappeared into the Demon Realm before it could be caught. The relationship between the Heaven Clan and the Demon Clan had been strained for hundreds of thousands of years, so the celestial guards did not dare enter and returned to the Grand Palace. The Heavenly King hearing of this, wrote a letter to High Immortal Heyang, who lives in the Demon Realm in the Palace of the Eternal Flame, to inquire about this mysterious light. When the High Immortal wrote back, he claims to have subdued the bright light and assured the Heavenly King that it posed no danger. After the king read the letter, his heart was at ease and the Heavens returned to normal.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

20,000 years ago, when Heyang was raised into the Heavenly Palace, the Heavenly King ordered the creation of a grand palace in the 3rd Heaven for the powerful immortal and even granted him control of the celestial guards. But when the palace was finished building, the High Immortal was nowhere to be found. It wasn't until months later, that a rumor circulated that Heyang had settled in the Demon Realm in the Palace of the Eternal Flame that once belonged to the Demon Queen Feihong, who disappeared and left the throne empty. The Heavenly Clan grew nervous at Heyang’s sudden change of alliance, so the Heavenly King sent celestial immortals to implore the High Immortal to return. However, when all the immortals returned to Heaven, they all agreed that High Immortal Heyang is a brilliant man that cares about the peace of the realms. They explained to the Heavenly King that Heyang settled in the Demon Realm to prevent the regional demon lords from fighting over the throne in the absence of Queen Feihong. The celestial immortals even mentioned that the Demon Queen, herself, had asked Heyang to live in her palace to secure peace. All the immortals that heard of this immediately relaxed, and all saw Heyang in a new light. They all praised him and some even felt ashamed that they ever doubted the honorable immortal.

Heyang knew that the Heavenly King would be concerned so came up with a story to get rid of the begging immortals. 20,000 years ago, when Feihong’s soul was shattered into three pieces and separated, Heyang swore that to Feihong that he would wait for her to return, so he stayed behind to protect her body.

When the bright light entered the Demon Realm ten days ago, Heyang knew that Feihong was beginning to awake. The piece of Feihong’s soul that was unknowingly attached to High Immortal Mozi’s body, had returned to her body. But since the soul is incomplete, Feihong's body suffered greatly as the soul endlessly thrashed within her. Her body was in excruciating pain and no medicine that Heyang fed her could comfort her. Feihong’s soft cries pained his heart, the first sound he heard from her in over 20,000 years, was filled with so much pain. Heyang held Feihong’s body softy, afraid to cause her more pain, and gently kissed her lips. That night Heyang drew out a piece of his own soul and used it to bind to Feihong’s soul, to ease her of her pain. This act of separating one's soul is extremely painful- like ripping out your own organs. Heyang lost thousands of years worth of cultivation, as a result, and coughed up blood for days afterward. But Heyang didn't care for such things as long as Feihong pain was subdued. However, Heyang knew that Feihong’s pain would not be suppressed for long, so he sent troops to obtain the Soul Seeking Flute that will track down the rest of Feihong’s soul. Celestial troops carrying Heyang’s edict for the Snake clan immediately drew attention from all the Beast Clans. The Snake clan, who were happy at the special attention they received, instantly sent over their divine instrument as the High Immortal ordered not wanting to offend the God of War. If anyone else had asked for the Soul Seeking Flute, the Snake Clan would have gone to war to protect their sacred treasure. But since the individual was High Immortal Heyang, the god that all creation admires and worships, they gladly complied. In exchange for the flute, Heyang had sent over a bottle of his blood, worth hundreds of years of cultivation. The Snake King proudly displays the porcelain bottle in the center of his palace for all to admire, earning the envy of all the other Beast Clans.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heyang never once left Feihong’s side. Ever since the first piece of her soul had returned, he hadn’t stopped holding her. In the beautifully decorated room, two figures lay on the bed- dark curtains shedding them from the outside world. Heyang would gently whisper sweet things into her ear and tenderly kiss her. Heyang knew that Feihong could not hear or feel him, but every action of his seems to comfort her, so he continued. The second incense stick had burnt off signaling for Feihong to take her medicine. Heyang sat up and carefully rested her delicate and soft body on his chest and placed her head on his shoulder while stirring the bowl of bitter medicine. He ordered all his servants to gather all useful medicines that would nurture Feihong’s body and restore her cultivation. Unlike before, Feihong’s body now seems to glow, giving off a beautiful and lively aura.

Under the dull moon, the celestial troops returned to the Palace of the Eternal Flame. His Majesty was still tending the sleeping maiden and forbid anyone from entering the room. This order made all the maids curious about the identity of the maiden. The only servant allowed to enter the bedroom was the Demon Queen’s head maid named Weiwei. All the prying maids would ask Weiwei for gossip but Weiwei, who was raised by Feihong, had sworn loyalty to the Queen and didn’t reveal Her Highness’s condition to anyone. But even Weiwei, herself, didn't understand why His Majesty would settle in the Demon Realm to take care of the Queen. Weiwei was an orphan and never knew her parents, Feihong had given her a new life. Weiwei had accompanied her for 35,000 years and never once did she see the Queen with His Majesty. But Weiwei could see the love and tenderness in HIs Majesty’s eyes, and feel at ease with him taking care of Her Highness.

Weiwei walked past clear pond reflecting the moon, carrying the sacred flute sealed in a wooden box. Weiwei lightly announced her arrival and entered the room. She approached the bed where the His Majesty was feeding Her Highness, the scent of the strong medicine was beginning to irritate Weiwei’s sensitive nose. She bowed at the waist. “Your Majesty, the Snake Clan has sent over the Soul Seeking Flute,” Weiwei softly said, afraid to disturb the peace. Heyang reached over with his hand and parted the beautifully embroidered bed curtain, revealing himself and Her Highness. Weiwei caught a glimpse of the Queen and her enthusiasm rose. Her Highness, Feihong, who was in terrible pain just a few days ago, now looks calm. Even more exciting was that her cultivation was restored and her body was now giving off a faint glow.

“Let me see,” Heyang ordered. His piercing eyes and handsome face even causes Weiwei to freeze up. His Majesty is the perfect match for our Queen, she thought. Weiwei stepped forward and opened the wooden box. The sacred flute is made from the purest of jade, giving off a green glow. Heyang reaches over and takes the flute from Weiwei, then gestures for her to leave.

Heyang had heard about the powers of the flute before- its ability to seek out anything that one desires as long as the summoner can provide a piece of the original. Before Heyang was unable to use the flute to seek Feihong since her soul had completely disappeared, not leaving a single trace. Now he would reunite her shattered soul and wake her up from the endless void.

Heyang starts playing the flute but no sound comes out, but he continues anyways- his long, delicate fingers skillfully play until he sensed a disturbance outside. The energy he sensed was identical to the flute's divine energy. Heyang quickly got up and headed for the door, but before heading out he stopped in his tracks. Feihong had whimpered at the loss of warmth and comfort, drawing his attention. Heyang returned to her bedside and once again whispered sweet things into her ear, and kissed her hand tenderly. “Don’t be afraid. I’ll be back soon,” he says affectionately while covering her cool body with sheets.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Weiwei retreats and patiently waits outside. About half an hour has past and Weiwei was beginning to nod off when all of the sudden fog started to surround the palace. Weiwei looked around in panic and confusion. Where did the fog come from? Weiwei thought, noticing that the fog was a faint green color. Then the doorway to Her Highness’s bedroom opens and Heyang exits holding the sacred flute. Weiwei bows to greet the king before speaking up, “Your Majesty, this strange fog appeared out of nowhere-” Weiwei was cut short.

“I’m going to make a trip. Take care of your mistress.” Heyang says sharply before disappearing into thin air.

Weiwei was dumbfounded. What could have been more important than Her Highness? Weiwei quickly retreats into the bedroom and looked around before closing the doors.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heyang and his guards followed the green fog until it ended at the mountain where the Bird Clan resides, just above the green forest bordering the Green-Bell Valley. Heyang entered the Azure Mountain, the celestial troops marching closely behind him.

Flying far above, the young guarding bird spirit noticed the intruders and was completely shocked. How stupid must these Beast spirits be to enter the heavily guarded mountain? The young bird spirit quickly flies to the Cliff Palace to warn the Bird King of the enemies’ approach.

The Bird King, after hearing the guard’s report, was enraged and decided to personally step out and see who dared to enter.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moments later, the Bird King was found kneeling on the ground in front of Heyang. The Bird King cursed the young guard. It was because of him that he made a bad impression in front of the High Immortal!!

Heyang looked coldly at the kneeling king. “I’m here to search for something,” He simply said, his discontent was obvious in his voice. The Bird King had no choice but to comply, and the entire mountain was searched by His Majesty’s guards. Until, His Majesty’s young attendant, Bofan, noticed a faint green glow coming from the forbidden room that the Brid King had sealed up. The Bird King weakly warned His Majesty of the dangers in the room.

Heyang had no cares for the Bird King, and with a wave of his hand, he broke the seal and unlocked the room. The Bird King’s face paled and starts to tremble. Heyang stepped into the dark, cold room and noticed that it was empty but for one object- a mirror placed on top of a pedestal. Heyang could feel the energies of multiple souls within the mirror. The pale Bird King spoke up and said in a terrified voice, “Your Majesty, I’m sure you have heard of the Guya Mirror, the soul trapping mirror for evil souls.”

Heyang had heard about this mirror- created from the vengeful spirit of the Bird Princess Guya thousands of years ago and now used as a prison for evil spirits- a inescapable prison. Heyang frowned. How did Feihong’s soul end up in here? He thought about it but was interrupted by the Bird King.

“If Your Majesty has a use for the mirror, then this king would be honored to give the mirror to Your Majesty,” the Bird King says while bowing. Heyang didn’t bother with other glance at the weak king and disappeared in a wisp of fog. At the entrance of the mountain, Heyang carefully examines the mirror, after finding nothing to be amiss, he begins to put the mirror into his sleeves. But before he could do so, a faint green light emits from the mirror and the mirror slips out of his hand and flies toward the green forest boarding the Green-Bell Valley. Heyang immediately heads toward the green light in the forest. Surrounded by the tall, dark trees it was impossible to see any light. Heyang ordered the guards to search around, while he flew above the forest to find the Guya Mirror. Then suddenly the green light appears once again and Heyang flies over the light then descends. But what he found was not the Guya mirror instead, he finds his Feihong climbing a tree.
