The black-attired man sat on the bed in a meditative stance, his hand holding the tore cloth pressing on to his chest, and his eyes closed. His calm attitude was completely unsuited for this situation, Xuehua thought. If she had just looked at the demeanor of the man, she would not have believed that he’s injured.
Xuehua furrowed her brows at the scene. His wounds must be painful, she thought. Couple beads of blood trickle down onto his lower stomach. Xuehua began to panic, she had never treated anyone with such a serious injury, not to mention she did not have any medicine or supplies available.
“Let me check your wound,” Xuehua said nervously. As she approached the mysterious man, he did not make any sudden movements or open his eyes. Xuehua couldn’t tell if the man was sleeping or just ignoring her. But she couldn’t care for his aloofness and decided to impose herself rather than stand by idly. She gathered herself at the side of the bed and reached over to examine his wound. Xuehua grabbed the man’s hand and pulled away to expose the deep cut. She winced at the sight, she had never seen so much blood before. Xuehua pressed her lips together in thought. She didn’t have anything to treat him with. If she were to leave him alone, he would die by the time the sun rose. She didn’t even know where to find the physician. Why does it seem like she is encountering bad luck with her every turn?
As if sensing her hesitation, the man opened his dark eyes. Under the warm glow of the candles, the mysterious man with hair, as dark as night, appeared regal and majestic. He coughed lowly to catch her attention. “This is a small cut. You don’t have to worry,” his hypnotizing voice drifted over to Xuehua.
Xuehua questionably glanced at his chest and pointed at his cut. “You should go see a doctor,” she suggested. She didn't want a man to die at the room she is currently staying in. Since he seemed fine, she quickly wanted him to leave so she could get some rest. Her stomach started to growl loudly once again.
“You want to kick an injured person outside?” the man aloofly said, his dark eyes looking straight into her eyes. “I think I want to stay here tonight.”
Xuehua’s next words got caught in her throat as her eyes widened considerably. “I….I...don't….”
Her refusal got cut off by the coughs of the mysterious man. Xuehua immediately felt guilty. How could she suggest him to leave while his cut is still bleeding? She was conflicted. How can she keep an unknown man in her room? But if she was to kick him out, wouldn’t it attract more attention?
“Ok, you can sleep on the bed tonight. How about I wrap up your injury first?” Xuehua decided she needed to be more high-minded; after all, what can an injured person do to her. With the help of the light, Xuehua found more cloth and was able to create a bandage, that will help stop the bleeding until she can find a doctor tomorrow.
She slowly began to wrap the bandage around the man. “Does it hurt? Is it too tight?”
“No..” he softly answers. The two remain in a quiet trance, giving each other glances.
“What is your name?” Xuehua asked, finishing up the binding. “My name is Xuehua.”
The sweet fragrance of the plum blossoms drifted into the room, surrounded the two figures. Xuehua felt as if she could get drunk of the scent. She looks closely at the mysterious man, waiting for his answer. She discovers that he is actually a handsome man with delicate features.
“My name is Heyang,” he says looking deep into Xuehua’s eyes.
“Heyang?” Xuehua smiled brightly. “It's nice to meet you. You're the first person I’ve met here.”
Heyang reaches over and brushes a strand of Xuehua’s hair away from her face with his long, slender fingers. He smiled gently at her words. His fingers linger on her flushed face. Xuehua pulled away and coughed a couple of time- her face completely red with embarrassment. She never interacted with a stranger like this before.
“It's getting late, let's go to sleep,” Xuehua mumbled under her breath, realizing for the first time, that her legs and arms are entangled with Heyang’s. How did she get into this position? Xuehua felt her face burning up even more.
“Ok, let’s go to sleep,” Heyang said smirking at her, twisting her words.
Xuehua was caught off guard once again. “I...I….I…,” Xuehua didn’t know what to say, her mind became muddled under his gaze. Suddenly, the lights of the candles were blown out by a mysterious wind, drowning the two in darkness. Out of instinct, Xuehua grabbed the closest thing next to her, which happened to be Heyang’s arms. Heyang chuckled and enveloped his arms around Xuehua.
“Don’t be scared. I’m here,” he whispered into her ears, amused at her reactions.
Xuehua’s blush seemed to have traveled to her ears now. “I… I’ll sleep on the floor,” she quickly untangled herself from Heyang and slipped off the bed while grabbing an extra blanket. She pressed her face on the hard, cold floor trying to cool herself down. He is a dangerous man, she thought.
