The next day, all my remaining belongings were packed into boxes and dropped off at the small house Masaomi and I were to live in. He had a few boxes of his own inside the living room, though he was nowhere to be seen. I walked throughout the house, eventually finding him in the bedroom, painting the walls my favorite color, purple. "What the hell? What are you doing?," I asked confused.
"I'm simply painting the walls. I figured you might like me more if I did something for you. I don't want you to hate me. We are married after all." He smiled softly, placing down the paint brush. He gasped and turned to face me, beginning to speak again. "Did you want me to take your last name? I figured you didn't want to take mine. Plus, Masaomi Mori kinda has a nice ring to it."
I simply nodded and asked him to wait a second. I walked downstairs and looked for an old shirt. Once I found one, I went back upstairs and took the extra paint brush. "At least let me help you. You don't have to do everything yourself. Whether or not I like you doesn't depend on you doing things for me. I only just met you, Masaomi. Let's work up to friends, even though we're husbands." I gave him a soft smile, trying to be civil. While I still was unhappy leading a poor life, I knew I had to make the best of it.
Eventually, we decided to take a break and I ordered us some chinese food, which I had never eaten before that night. Normally, I'd eat expensive food made by the chef but it was a nice change of pace. While eating, I asked Masaomi what he did for a living. He simply responded, "I used to be working at a daycare. I had to quit because my mother had gotten really sick. Recently, I got a job as an cashier to help me get by while I'm in medical school."
I was shocked. He was studying to be a doctor? He continued to tell me about how he'd been saving since he was 11 so he could go to medical school. He'd wanted to be a doctor since he was a child. I didn't realize it was this difficult for poor people. I was currently in business school myself. I wanted to get my business degree so I could better run the company. I asked him if he had student loans and he said yes. I agreed to pay them. I'd have my father get right on that. Sighing, I called him up. "Father. Can you please arrange to pay off Masaomi's student loans in full. Thank you. Yes. We are spending time together. Love you too, Father. Goodbye. Well, He's going to pay you debt in full."
Masaomi hugged me, thanking me. He said that now his money could go towards his mother's medical bill as it was enough and then some. I smiled softly, a warm feeling in my chest. Was this what it felt like to do things for others? I'd never expirienced this feeling before that day. His smile made me happy, for whatever reason. That smile would soon become the reason I did anything. He was my husband and I vowed that I would treat him as such from them on.
Once we finished dinner, he showed me how to wash dishes and do some cleaning, such as sweeping, mopping and vaccuming. I must say, it was rather enlightening as I had never done such things before in my life. I actually ended up having a good time with him, despite my previous beliefs. By the end of the night, we'd become use to chatting and we fell asleep together on the couch.
