The Surface

Right Place at the Wrong Time

Right Place at the Wrong Time

Dec 02, 2018

She ducked behind the table in her Dad’s office and got in a crouching position in order to get as low as she could. Loud explosions and gunfire could be heard from outside, and Sora had no idea what was going on or where it was coming from. She jumped in panic at the sound of knob squeaking aggressively, a sign of impending force entry.

Oh, shit, I’m going to die! She stared in terror with pupils fixated on the door as stumbled around the room with backs turned to the walls trying to figure out a good hiding place.

“Sora...?”

Huh- who's that...?

The sound of her name in a familiar tone was a blessing in disguise. She leaped up in one swift motion to see her father then rushed towards him. The tears of relief haven't come just yet but they were certainly close.

“Sora, what on earth are you doing here?”

“I came to see you,” she said, “then out of nowhere, there were some disturbances on the floor and troubling messages over the intercom. And then,” She dreadfully recalled, “I heard gunshots! Guns aren’t allowed in City Calypse!”She panicked.

He gripped her by both arms then shook her, “Sora, calm down." He roughens her up. Staring in his eyes, she saw that he was neither puzzled nor shaken.

“Dad,” She pleaded, “what’s going on?”

With narrowed eyes and a stiff posture, Mike looked more worried than ever as he rubbed his chin vigorously, “They’ve already evacuated this floor…”He said as he walked over to his desk and pulled out the top left drawer to remove a handgun, place it in his lab coat then said…

“Sora, listen to me very carefully” he started. “You haven’t seen a thing! Do you understand me?”

Heart beating like crazy, Sora was obsequious and responded promptly shaking her head violently “Yes Father.” He gently turned the knob, peeped out and then proceeded to leave the office.

“Now, just stay close and do everything I…”

“You there! Put your hands in the air where I can see them, both of you!”

“Officer, it’s me Professor Michael Cage and this is…”

“I said hands in the air where I can see them!”

Time stood still as Sora shook in awe incapable of processing the direness of the situation around her. With her hands in the air, she noticed the three guards discussing to themselves and what appears to be them taking orders from a small radio on the top left of their uniform.

*Indistinct chatter on the radio*-

“Okay, got it!”

The call ended, and he raised his gun…

“Sorry kid…”

No longer can I take this pain,

I hope this cry for help was not in vain.

Not man or god can let me see,

That you and I weren't meant to be

I love you so, my heart's a mess,

If only you would just confess

Don't you lie, I know its there,

The moments that we held so dear
