Andy has his head down on his desk with his eyes shut - trying to rest off the copious amounts of alcohol he’d drank in so little time. “Greg told me you’d be over here.” Andy rolls his head and cracks his eyes to see the inky black Lucifer standing over him. “Why aren’t you at your party?”
Andy lets out a long groan. “Lucifer… I’m so druuuunk. I found out Morgan is my new manager, all the demons were in there, I spilled something on my shirt, and I’m drunk. That’s why.”
Lucifer lets out a soft laugh and lowers himself to the floor. He sits down and crosses his legs. His glowing eyes squint in a happy bean shape. He pats Andy on the knee, prompting him to sit up and turn to face him. “It’s alright, Andy! Just relax here. I’ll even stay with you!”
Andy shuts his eyes and shakes his head slowly. “No, no. Go back to the party. Have a…” he takes a long breath to relax his stomach. “Go have a good time.”
Lucifer pats his knee again but leaves it there this time, giving it a small shake. “I see those folks every day! Last thing they need is to have their boss watching over them while they’re trying to relax. I’d rather stay here with my new friend!” Andy feels that strange sensation strenthen the longer Lucifer’s hand stays on his knee. Lucifer’s tail is wagging like an excited cat. Andy smiles at the kind sentiment.
“You’re such a sweet guy, Lucifer. I’m sorry to bring it up but… How could you ever let a woman treat you like that? You deserve so much better! You’re amazing!” Andy slides out of his chair and sits across from his boss, taking his hands in his own to console him preemptively.
Lucifer tilts his head to the side with a chuckle. “Thank you but… what woman?” Lucifer leaves his hands in Andy’s but relaxes his arms so that they drop a bit lower.
Andy shakes his head at the floor. “Lucifer… Your ex.” He gives Lucifer a sincere set of eyes and prepares himself to give another hug if need be. “She treated you terribly. You deserve all of Hell! You have to get over her! When did you two even split up?”
Andy could tell that Lucifer had a sad smile on his face. “Him.”
“What?” Andy sobered up for a moment.
“Him. It was a he.” Lucifer laughed. “Don’t worry there’s no way you could’ve known that either.”
Andy’s stomach turned over from the guilt of fucking up a second time (and also the alcohol). “Shit, Lucifer. I’m sorry! I did it again! I should just stop talking all together.”
Lucifer pulled his hands out from between Andy’s and switched to hold his instead. “No! You’re trying to help me out and I could never fault you for that. Heck, you’ve only known me for a day and the fact that you care so much as to help is so sweet and kind!” He shakes Andy’s hands to signal that everything's alright. “I think you’re right. It has been 758 years, four months, three weeks, five days and… What time is it?”
Andy leans back to look at the clock on his computer, “5:13.”
“And four hours and eleven minutes. Maybe 758 years, four months, three weeks, 5 days, four hours and twelve minutes is enough time to move on.” Both men laughed. “Andy… Would you help me get over my ex-boyfriend?”
Andy feels his chest swell with determination as his smile grows with confidence. “I’d be honored to, boss! I’m your man!” Andy wasn’t sure, but he thought he saw some red appearing through the black smoke of his face. “Come on! Let’s ditch the party and go somewhere to grab a drink and talk this over.” Andy pulls his tingling hands away and grabs his desk to pull himself up. He stumbles for a moment and catches himself as Lucifer seemingly floats up from the floor. “Do you want Greg to go? Three minds are better than two.”
Lucifer takes a sharp inhale to think about it. “I’d… rather not. I think I’ll be more comfortable if it’s just us.”
Andy shrugs and places his arm around Lucifer’s shoulders. “I’ll just text him that I got too wasted and had to head home. Let’s go!” Andy pulls his phone out of his pocket with his free hand and sends a sloppy text to Greg while being ushered out by Lucifer.
It wasn’t until they got into the elevator that Andy unhooked himself from the strange feeling of Lucifer’s touch. He collapses onto the wall behind him and shuts his eyes. “Where do you wanna go, Lucifer?”
Lucifer turns to look at Andy. “Hmm… I don’t really want to put on my face. How about we just go to one of our places?”
Andy takes a relaxed pause. “Yeah, that sounds smart. Gotta keep some privacy too.” Andy straightens up and gives Lucifer a puzzled look. “I’m not sure if I have any alcohol though. Is it standard for case managers to leave some?” Lucifer’s smoke shakes no. “Well I don’t want to invite myself to your house.”
“No! I’m inviting you over! It’s happening. You’re my friend, I want you to come to my house and have a drink or ten.” They both chuckle and before Andy can try and refuse, Lucifer takes his hand and drags him out of the elevator. “Let’s go!” Now Andy is the one whose face is glowing. “I’m just around the corner.”
Andy doesn’t even pay attention as to where they’re walking, focusing only on Lucifer’s hand gripping his and the sensation creeping up his arm. Before they know it, they’re in another elevator that’s speeding downwards and his hand feels strangely empty. “Gosh, it’s been a while since anyone has been to my apartment! The last time was my Christmas party back in December. So, sorry if it’s a mess.”
It hadn’t crossed Andy’s mind until now but he had to ask: “You guys celebrate Christmas down here? I suppose there’s no reason not to but… Just wouldn’t have expected it.”
Lucifer lets loose that laugh that shakes Andy’s brain. “Yes, some people do! I suppose I was throwing more of a ‘holiday’ party but more people say Christmas party so that’s what I defaulted to.” It made sense to Andy. “My place is actually down on the same level as my office. It’s a little selfish but it’s actually because there’s nothing else down there, so my place can be really big. It’s almost like a mansion underground.” Andy is impressed. “You’re gonna love it!”
Almost as if on cue, the doors open onto a massive marble entryway. Massive paintings and sculptures line the room in extravagance. Andy’s shoes echo against the marble as he gawks at what he can only assume is a fraction of the home. “Holy…”
“Language.” Lucifer steps up beside him and nudges his arm.
“Crap. This is insane! Lucifer! Your house is incredible!” Andy stares at the smoky man with an underground mansion.
“You don’t even know the sixteenth of it!” Lucifer’s laugh echoes loud and clear, sounding like a beautiful song ringing through a chapel. “Come on! Would you rather talk in the living room? Or the home theater? Or the kitchen? Or the viewing room?”
Andy slaps the sides of his face to ground himself. “Living room is fine. How many rooms are there?”
Lucifer starts to walk off, expecting Andy to follow. “893.” His response is proud yet factual. The two wander through hallways with plush and intricate carpets, cut through rooms that had fourth dimensional decorations, one section was just part of a rainforest. Andy literally couldn’t believe some of the rooms he walked through. It took five minutes to reach the living room and Andy was shocked to see that it was fairly normal. There was a TV, leather couch, two leather chairs… It was nice. Lucifer gestures to the couch and walks to a small bar on the back wall. “Sit, make yourself at home. What would you like to drink?”
Andy settles into the couch and lets the plush cushions envelop him. “Just… I should just do water for now.” Lucifer appears, silently, with a glass of water and one of scotch. He places it down in front of Andy and takes the opposite side of the couch, holding his glass close. “Thanks. You’ve really got quite the place here. I’m pretty sure my body turned inside out in one of those rooms.”
“Thank you! And it did! I try to avoid that room to be quite honest, the interior designer I hired insisted on it though. It kinda grosses me out.” Andy watches as the brown liquid disappears into the smoke of his face.
“Lucifer, did you know that your smoke form has a weird effect on humans when you touch them?” Now felt as good a time as any to ask.
Lucifer’s eyes grew to envelop a good portion of his face. “Really? I had no clue. What does it do?”
“Well, it’s hard to explain. It’s this insane sensation that tingles and prickles, stings and soothes, it’s like when the blood comes back to a part of your body that’s asleep but while you're running a marathon.” It was near impossible for Andy to think of a comparison. “It’s… It’s not bad per say. Just different.”
Lucifer contemplates this new information for a moment. “Here, give me your hand. I’ll hold it and then you can try and describe it better.”
Andy was hesitant but finally agreed to let him do it, partially wanting to try holding Lucifer’s hand again. He puts his hand out and Lucifer places his glass down. Lucifer looks at Andy one last time as if to ask for permission. Andy nods. Lucifer wraps his hands around Andy’s and the sensation envelops his limb once again. “Whoa… It’s like if you could put a sensation to excitement. Anxiety and happiness wrapped together and brushing your skin. I… I think I like it.”
Andy slowly brings his gaze up to Lucifer’s. They make eye contact for a moment before both of them snap their heads away and recoil their hands. “Let’s talk about you, Lucifer. We were supposed to help you get over your ex.” Andy was desperate to change the topic. However, Lucifer’s eyes instantly dimmed at the mention of his past love. “Lucifer, come on man. You’ve been stuck on this guy for well over seven hundred years. We have to discuss this. You gotta move on.”
Lucifer lets out a sad moan. “Yeah… You’re right. Where do we start though?” He looks to Andy with desperate eyes.
“Well, I guess I need to know who it was that broke my best friend’s heart.” Andy gave him a reassuring nod.
“I’m your best friend?” Lucifer’s smoke picks up speed and flits off the top of his head. Andy stares the focus back into him. “His name was Michael.”
Andy holds his hand up to pause the conversation. “Wait, Michael as in the archangel Michael?” Andy was beyond shocked. “Holy crap! You were dating the archangel Michael!” Lucifer nods his head. “Gosh, well. How did he treat you?”
“Well he was amazing! He bossed me around. He called me a snake and other horrible names. He beat me up. He completely isolated me from others for months on end. Other times he’d completely ignore me… I loved him.” Lucifer was staring up into the rosey light of his past. Andy was disturbed.
“What? Lucifer! Those are terrible! He was abusing you!” Lucifer looked confused by Andy’s reaction. “Have you ever dated anyone else?” Lucifer shakes his head. “Man, we got some work to do…”
