I must say that I love how you've made this House of Love a lucrative industry in an obviously developed country. The media like to make human trafficking look like the by-product of some type of social degeneration due to political regimes that generally do not fit into the accepted "developed-country" script (and you know what, yes, poverty does lead to human trafficking - but not because poor people are degenerate, rather because there is a buying power and demand for victims that tilts the balance towards human trafficking). But here you are, just, in a very artistic and interesting way, pointing at the epidemic of sexual abuse in foster care in North America, reminding of the organized sexual trafficking of First Nation and Inuit children in Canada (Residential schools for First Nation and Inuit children existed until 1994 - which is yesterday, pretty much). And by doing that, you are creating a necessary discomfort. You are making the subject of your comic so close to the reader. And let me just gush about this idea of revenants. Spirits of children who cling to those who hurt them. That brings to mind such a strong message. Namely that as long as we let human trafficking take place, we refuse repose to the souls of the victims. We have a duty to stand up. But there were also evil revenants in the first chapter. Are those the revenants of the abusers? I can imagine that people who do evil cannot expect to find peace either. Amazing work! I am totally hooked.
It all started when her grandma died. Ever since then, Jade could see dead people. With her spirit eyes, she’s studied them. Souls of the suffering, souls of the wronged, and the most tormented…revenants, souls of the murdered who now seek revenge. If only she’d known about them when her little brother was adopted from their orphanage. If only she’d known that those people weren’t parents to be but child traffickers, revenants of the many children lost clinging to their backs. Years later, Jade is ready. She will find them, but will she see her brother again?
