I am not very good at a lot of things I try.
The picture for this series is my attempt at baking a Tardis cake. The cake tasted alright but other than that it was a bit of a disaster. I applied the icing too soon which meant it melted. I had the wrong colour food colouring so it ended up more green than blue. Oh and top it off I used too much so I ended up with green fingerprints everywhere.
Not great at all.
In the past when I was about seven or eight I tried out for a singing part in a play. I stood in front of the whole school and started singing Twinkle Twinkle little star for the audition. Part way through I could hear someone snickering and I just couldn't do it anymore. I ran away crying. My singing was pretty damn bad to begin with. I am pitchy, out of tune and tend to speed up as I go along. This has not changed over the years. The only difference is I don't want to perform for anyone except for myself or my mates when i'm enjoying a song.
Karaoke? Yes please. A professional performance? I would only make money if they paid me to shut up.
I have tried cycling a few times. The score of disasters includes taking several years to get going without training wheels or a guiding hand. Managing to turn the handlebars 180 degrees before making the bike fall over. And breaking the gears when attempting a ten mile mountain biking trek as a teenager. Twice.
What I have taken from all of this is that making mistakes is fun. I have so many funny or at least amusing stories of the stupid things I have done when trying something new. What they all have in common is that I at least tried.
I don't mention here the things I have discovered I am good at by trying. But they did happen too. And if I want to find more of them I guess i'm just going to have to keep making these fun mistakes.
