Were and Vampire based illness where a person slowly loses a sense of their humanity, affecting the afflicted Were’s or Vampire’s mind in ways that are similar to Alzheimer's in humans. It usually affects those older than one hundred years, though it can affect Weres or Vampires of all ages. It is not a contagious illness physically, but if the higher ranks of Beta or Alpha are diagnosed it is more likely the whole pack, pride or conclave will be more susceptible. Omegas can suffer from Rogue Syndrome, but they progress through the stages at a faster rate and thus are less likely to affect the pack.
Rogue Syndrome has four stages based on how far the afflicted has progressed into the illness.
The first stage is called Aggressive Rogue, and at this point, the syndrome is almost unnoticeable. There are no physical changes to the Were or Vampire in either form, but they develop a feeling of agitation. The afflicted suffer from severe mood swings, and their personalities begin to change.
The second stage is called Manic Rogue, and this stage is most often noted by the black ring that forms around the afflicted amber, crimson or blood-colored irises in the Were’s animal form or when the Vampire’s primal side is forward. Those Were afflicted at this stage, begin to crave more blood in their meats, and their bodies start to reject vegetables. Vampires afflicted tend to drink blood in greater amounts than normal. At this stage judgment and reasoning skills are weakening, as the afflicted develop a sense of paranoia of the world around them. They often attack when startled in the later days of this stage.
Stage three is called Arrested Rogue, and at this point, the color of the entire iris of the Were’s animal form and the Vampire’s primal side has been replaced in totality by black color. The afflicted start to develop psychosis, seeing loved ones as threats and often scratching at themselves as if remove their skin. All forms of communication are weakened and lost. They lose the ability to control their animal form or primal side at all, causing Weres to shift back and forth constantly. Because of this Weres’ struggle to eat enough to sustain themselves and their diet is at this point only raw meat. Vampires afflicted at this stage find their bodies rejecting the blood they consume.
The final stage is called Feral Rogue, and the afflicted Were or Vampire can no longer be brought back by any means. Afflicted Weres have lost the ability to return to human form at all and afflicted Vampire’s primal sides are always forward. At this stage, the afflicted are actively seeking out victims to attack and kill, but have lost all desire to sustain themselves. Both the turned Were’s and primal Vampire’s whole eyes, whites and irises, are black. The turned Weres often look as if they are affected by mange while the primal Vampires fangs no longer retract, often looking coated in blood, with their state of appearance unkempt.
There is no other cure currently besides having an Omega try to heal them, but there are rumors that some Mage clans are actively seeking a cure, while other clans may be working to find a way to trigger the later stages.
