- I'm sorry, I'll give you my backpack, and I promise never to come here again! – Tears start forming on his eyes.
- It won’t work, kid! You won’t get out of here without at least a cut on your neck! – The smirk that was being formed on the man's face turns into terrifying laughter.
Mitsuo was almost crying, when from behind he hears an unknown feminine voice.
- What now, loser?! Haven’t I told you yet? This is my street! –The girl shouts, stepping hard on the floor.
- Akane!? I... I... I'M SORRY! – The stranger seems to be looking at death right in the eyes. Terrified and bewildered, he drops Mitsuo on the floor, making he fall on his back. Then, for the first time, he sees his savior; a girl with burning red eyes, who seems to be about the same age as him.
- Just leave, dude... or else, I'll have to remind you of why this is my street. – The girl says, snapping both hands' fingers.
- NO, I SWEAR I WON’T SHOW UP HERE ANYMORE, THE STREET'S ALL YOURS! – He leaves through the path Mitsuo came from without ever looking back, frightened by the mysterious girl, who also without looking back, goes to help Mitsuo get up. Her eyes, which where shining before with na electrifying red, seemed to have faded.
- Are you okay? – She says, reaching her hand to Mitsuo.
- Yes, I am! Thank you, Ms. Akane- that's what he called you, right? – Mitsuo looks at the girl’s clothes, and finds out they go to the same school. Then, he remembers.
- WE'RE LATE! – He starts running, pulling Akane by the hand until she starts to run too. – OH, AND THANKS FOR THE HELP! YOU LOOK REALLY STRONG!
- YEAH, I AM! AND AFTER WE GET TO SCHOOL I'LL PUNCH YOU RIGHT ON THE FACE FOR PULLING ME LIKE THAT!
There are approximately five minutes left for class to start, and they're already close. Meanwhile in Mitsuo's classroom, Harumi, his childhood friend, is worried about Mitsuo for being late, She keeps staring with her green eyes at the class'dor, thinking that the teacher can enter at any minute. Exchanging looks with the wall clock, there being two minutes left for the bell to ring, the door is opened rapidly, and Mitsuo enters through it. He puts the backpack on the empty seat beside Harumi, soon calming down and sitting to rest after a long run.
- You're late, and almost missed the test... You stayed up late playing again, isn't that right? - She analyses him, noticing he is panting.
- Am I that predictable? - His voice is muffled, for he's looking for his pen in his backpack.
- A bit. Don't forget that I know you almost better than your mother does. - She states this happilly, with a soft laugh.
- It doesn't mean that you have to get involved in my life... I'm sorry... a crazy guy with a knife almost cut me on the way here... He finally lifts his head, holding a blue pen.
- Alright... Just don't- wait... what?
- Ms.Akane was there to my luck, don't worry, I'm fine! Don't get too worked up. You can't get too emotional on the first month after your Awakening, right... ?
- I've been training, it won't get off anymore just because of emotional shock... but... how can you say that so calmly?
Before Mitsuo manages to think of an answer, the teacher arrives holding the tests, ready to distribute them. Meanwhile, the two delinquents of the class are four seats behind Mitsuo. They make a paper ball and throw it to hit his nape, but millimeters before hitting him, the ball hits a small green wall that breaks in even smaller pieces, without making any noise. If no one saw the scene, it would be as if it had never happened. Harumi looks at Mitsuo, her eyes shining with a pure, vivid green for a fraction of a second, and then Mitsuo hears a paper ball falling on the floor right behind his chair. Without thinking too much, he already knows what just happened, and looks worried at Harumi. He whispers to her:
- Harumi... it was only a paper ball. I KNOW what you feel when you use your barrier. You don't have enough training... even if you try to make one, your head starts hurting, my God, you can even have an "E.E.U", you can lose your sight and-
The teacher puts the test on Mitsuo's class and looks threateningly to him, making him understand that the long whisper was bothering him; he should sit properly; stop talking and do the test. However, the fact that Harumi used her eyes bothered him far too much. She starts to get pale and takes her hand to her mouth.
- Teacher, I believe that Harumi must go to the nurse's office. - He says, looking worried.
Before the teacher could say anything, Harumi stands up and leaves the classrom without saying a word. The teacher then gave a sign for Mitsuo to go with her. He soon starts to walk and goes through the door. Leaving the classroom, he finds Harumi leaning against the hall's wall, still with her hand covering her mouth. When she realizes Mitsuo is there watching, she gets scared, and blood starts to drop from the hand that's covering her mouth.
- Harumi! - Mitsuo lifts his arm and holds Harumi's bloody hand. - Let's go to the nurse's office, now! - He pulls her hand, but when he does, a big amount of blood starts to drip from her mouth. Simultaneously, she starts having a nosebleed.
-It's an "E.U.E", I knew it! Let's go! Now! - He quickly starts carrying her, going as fast as possible to the nurse's office. The blood continues dripping. When he finally arrives, he puts her on a bed and tells the nurse what happened in the classroom and the hall.
- I still don't believe it... girl, you're really an idiot, aren't you? But it surprises me that you can make a solid barrier... that was very irresponsible of you. How long has it been since her eyes awakened? - She turns to a drawer beside the bed on which Harumi is.
- It has been only two weeks, ma'am. - He says, getting close to the bed to hold Harumi's hand.
- Who do you think you are, girl? You could have lost your sight, did you know that? You did well bringing her here, Mitsuo. You can wait here if you want to go with your friend to class when the next period starts. - the nurse opens the drawer. Inside it, there are many syringes with "Stabilizer" written on them, and she takes one. - Mitsuo, can you raise her sleeves for me? I need to apply this, fast.
Mitsuo quickly raises the sleeves of Harumi's uniform. The nurse gently applies the injection. Slowly, Harumi's color starts coming back, and the bleeding stops.
- These things are quite good, huh... - The nurse says while putting the syringe to the discard - Now it's a rule... the schools that have "special students" need to have a stock of these. It's been a month since they implemented that. They say they took years to develop them. Well, if your friend had this "Extreme Use of Essence" maybe she would have gotten blind. Wait for the period to end, you can go back to class later. - She turns around and walks quickly to the other side of the office.
