I shot up in surprise, goosebumps raised on my arms. My dark brown eyes opened and the room was flooded in bright light. The walls, the floor, the roof, everything was a blinding white. I’d felt something cold gently touch my left leg, causing me to jerk in surprise. I looked down to the foot of the bed, letting my eyes adjust to the brightness. A butterscotch-haired man sat on a chair near the edge of the bed. I let out a confused sound, causing his head to snap up. His expression looked vaguely confused.
“You’re awake?” he mumbled, more to himself than to me.
He then launched himself at me with a grin, allowing his arms to snake around me. I winced and felt a dull pain on my throat and abdomen. A sharp intake of breath on my part caused the man to pull himself off me. “Oh! I’m so sorry, it probably still hurts, right?” he asked. Who is this guy? Why is he acting so familiar with me?
“I’m sorry, but could you please tell me who you are?” I asked him pleadingly. His cloudy gray eyes lightened with sadness and I felt pity rush through me, which felt quite strange since I didn’t have any emotional attachment towards this man. “Where am I?” I asked instead.
“You’re in the hospital. You really can’t remember who I am?” he asked, sounding really hurt. That’s… weird, I thought silently. “Do you remember Jayden?” the man asked. I touched my hand to my temple, desperately trying to remember something, but continuing to pull up a blank. I shook my head, unable to remember. I felt my frustration build up.
“Who am I...? Who are you?” I asked, looking around the room and then finally at him. The man had an almost imperceptible smile on his face, which disappeared when he realized I was examining him.
“You don’t remember me? Well, your name is Kaylie Warrens, and I’m your boyfriend, Grayson Waters,” he told me, whispering the first sentence. I recoiled in surprise. No way! My eyes ran up and down him in astonishment. No way I dated him! He's WAY out of my league! He sat next to me and fiddled with a lock of my dark brown hair.
“You must be wondering who Jayden is,” he assumed. I nodded, really wanting to know what this unknown person was to me. “Well, to put it simply, Jayden is or… was your stalker,” he stated nonchalantly. It seems strange that my 'boyfriend' could say that so calmly, rather than looking really concerned for my safety."He’s also the reason you’re here.” At that moment, a nurse slammed the door open. I winced at the loud and unexpected sound.
“You’re awake?” she asked, her voice quite loud.
“Clearly,” Grayson retorted. That was unnecessary, I thought darkly. The nurse rolled her eyes and huffed at his response.
“Is this guy bothering you? According to the front desk, he demanded to see you and shoved past security,” she informed me. I shook my head because he wasn’t really bothering me, just slightly stressing me out.
“She seems to have amnesia. She doesn’t even remember her name,” Grayson explained to the nurse, who was glaring at him. A small smile appeared on my face for no real reason. “Let’s go home.” That smile faded when I realized he was talking to me.
“What?” I asked, playing dumb. Going into a stranger’s house? No way! I may not remember who I am, but I know that it’s not common of boyfriends to live with their ‘girlfriends.’
“Let’s go home,” he repeated, looking frustrated. I crossed my arms in front of me.
“No, I don’t know you. Err... remember you,” I corrected myself quietly. My dark hair fell over my shoulder as I looked down to the ground nervously.
“Well, I do. You are my girlfriend. You are coming with me to our house." he stated through clenched teeth. I flinched and scooted away slightly from him.
“If she doesn’t want to go home with you, as her ‘boyfriend,’ you should be able to respect her choice," the nurse informed him curtly. Grayson clenched his fists, which caused me to flinch slightly yet again.
“I-um, I think we should, um, yeah, go home,” I suggested timidly, my voice trembling slightly. Grayson's expression changed completely and a happy grin was plastered all over his face in seconds. Grayson reached out and gently helped me out of the hospital bed. The nurse watched me intently, causing the goosebumps on my forearms to raise yet again. A chill ran down my spine as Grayson led me down the stairs.
