Child of Light

Chapter Nine: Twin Rabbits

Chapter Nine: Twin Rabbits

Feb 24, 2019

THE HOWLING, SWIRLING WINDS OF OASIA’S STORM SLOWED DOWN as if the world itself froze to a standstill.

Panting from the flight, the White Rabbit stumbled toward the Black Rabbit, she crawled away backwards. Nothing could be said between the two rabbits as Kou cupped their sleeved hands together, manifesting the sapphire star above. They took a single step forward but Tsukiko shook her head, causing Kou to stop in their tracks with a saddened dim in their eyes of daylight.

Kou dropped their hands to their side as the star vanished into the air. Determined to save all of Oasia, the White Rabbit rushed up to Tsukiko and hugged her tightly.

Surprised, the Black Rabbit flailed her arms and tried to break free, but something deep down welled up from within. The familiar warmth of a loved one was something even she couldn’t stay away from. She hugged back and closed her eyes as a black shadowy ring closed in around them, but a radiant light pulsed out from the two rabbits, causing light and shadow to struggle against each other.

Kou looked up at the swirling winds as some memories of the Black Rabbit’s journey played out like a slideshow around them.

A beautiful, radiant city beneath the calm guise of the starry, night sky. Teeming with life and activity at every turn, the memory of the Black Rabbit’s arrival couldn’t be any more different than a lost child searching for their guardians or a sibling.

The memory faded as a new one took its place. Tsukiko helped a tiny child with two large, scarlet eyes weave a net out of a spider’s web. She walked throughout the brimming city and even boarded a massive blimp. Excised and happy to see the wondrous world of Oasia, the Black Rabbit saw the vast oceans and the Elkhi swamplands from the skies.

The memories seemed as though they’d never end but they came to a halt when Tsukiko met Lady Mania for the first time in the iridescent forest of Synesthesia.

The Black Rabbit slowly opened her eyes and gazed into the swirling winds. Like her twin sibling, she saw the memories play out in a similar fashion. From Kou’s awakening and first steps in a strange new world to their meeting with the old Fisherman, Abraham, the farewell of Sentiana, and the comfort of the Elkhi siblings.

As the memories of Kou continued to play out, tears began to flow down the cheeks of Tsukiko as the last iridescent tree of Synesthesia appeared with the White Rabbit’s first meeting with Lady Mania. Tsukiko tightened her hug on her twin as a tear flowed down her cheek.

The second the tear dripped from her cheek and hit the ground, the two rings, or light and shadow shattered into tiny, glowing wisps around the two rabbits.

They let go of one another as Tsukiko wiped the tears from her eyes. Looking around in awe of the twinkling orbs, it was like they were surrounded by the stars themselves.

Kou held onto their sister’s hand and pulled her into the center. They spun around and around together as Tsukiko’s gloomy expression was lifted into a wondrous, yet silent laughter. The faster they spun, the looser their grip became. The duo released each other’s hands and fell flat on their backs. The twin rabbits tried to catch as their breath as they looked at each other with happy, bright eyes.

The sparkling, floating wisps spun and danced around them. Faster by the second, they matched the speed of the swirling winds and slowly flew up into the night sky above.

As the Black Rabbit stood up and patted the dust off her clothes, she pulled Kou to their feet and helped get rid of any dirt from them.

The surrounding, swirling winds were painted in black and white once all the twinkling orbs vanished from sight. The powerful storm illuminated the land around it and even the ocean floor of Oasia could be seen from the surface.

Neither child could hide their amazement of the gales of day and night. The burnt trees of the forest were slowly brought back to life as the iridescent leaves began to grow at a quick rate.

The sky of Oasia began to flash between a bright, blue day and a dark, starry night. The twinkling stars faded in and out of sight as the clouds themselves were rapidly moving across the boundless sky.

The White Rabbit cupped their sleeved hands together, forming the sapphire star once more. They looked into the moonlit eyes of their twin and nodded.

Tsukiko did the same as a transparent, scarlet crescent moon of the same size as the sapphire star hovered above her hands.

The transparent celestial bodies of sapphire and scarlet twirled around one another and slowly floated upwards above the two rabbits. The star and the crescent moon shot into the sky as if they were launched by some unseen force. The further the two flew upwards, the faster they twirled around each other.

Only in a matter of seconds, the star and the moon were high in the sky to be seen by all residents of Oasia. The two crashed into each other and exploded like a firework with a miraculous display of colors. The fragments spread out in all directions across the sky, sweeping away the eternal night and brought forth the dawn of a new day to replace it for the cycle to begin anew.

The swirling black and white winds of the storm slowly dissipated and vanished from sight, leaving the twins of day and night beneath the iridescent leaves that reflected the light of day.

Together, the pair hopped with glee. They hugged each other one more time as Abraham, Lady Mania, and the Elkhi siblings stopped near them.

“Tsu,” Mania put down the Elkhi siblings and walked up to the twins. “I’m sorry.”

The Black Rabbit shook her head and gave a warm smile. She hugged the Harpy, much to Mania’s surprise, she gently returned it.

Abraham leaned against a tree, trying to catch his breath. “I’ll… I’ll be fine. Just… Give me a couple minutes.”

The Elkhi siblings ran around and played as the iridescent petals gently flowed with the breeze was a mild wind.

A bright blue, endless sky with the warmth of a new dawn marked a new beginning for all in Oasia. Throughout the world where the light could reach, nearly every creature stepped out of their homes and saw the eternal night has ended. Many saw the day for the first time while old-timers reminisced in the memories of the days of their youth before Oasia was trapped in the shroud of shadows.

A world that once saw the light of day, Oasia, was shrouded in the shadows of eternal night.

When the sun no longer rose beyond the horizon, catastrophe after catastrophe struck the world's inhabitants, leaving many without a place to call home. Cities were ripped apart by massive quakes, homes were flooded to the point of no repair, and the hopes of all assailed to oblivion.

A lone child named Kou awoke in the ruins of a building torn in half by the quakes. Their eyes shined bright as if daylight came to greet the world and its inhabitants once more. The ground beneath the child lit up with every step they took along with every object they held. Scared and confused, Kou must discover why they were brought to an unfamiliar world and hopefully, a way home.Read more
