Claire
The house was practically shaking from the music as we walked up. Almost immediately after we entered the girls peeled off. Heidi went off to grab a drink and “act natural” and Hannah left to look for Kevin. Our roles were clear, Hannah was The Distraction, Heidi was The Lookout, and I was The Burglar, I hated my role.
The room was crowded but I was alone. I walked through the house to the stairs trying my best to look relaxed. I looked up at the stairs, took a deep breath, and began my ascent.
I walked towards the room at the end of the hall. I tried the door, it swung open. I stood on the threshold for a second, bracing myself and then I walked in, shutting the door behind me.
The room was clean, too clean I thought to myself. I walked over to the desk and began going through the drawers, looking for the thumb drive that Heidi had mentioned. I was halfway through the second set of drawers when I heard laughter and footsteps approaching the door. It was Hannah. My phone buzzed with a text from Heidi, They r going upstairs!! I took a deep breath and thought of my options. There was a closet I could hide in, but what if Hannah took her role as The Distraction too seriously and they went at it? I shuddered. They were getting closer. That’s when my eyes settled on the window.
I grabbed the thumb drive and opened the window, I sent a silent prayer of thanks when I saw there was no screen. I had one leg out the window when the door started to open, life moved in slow-mo as I pulled myself the rest of the way out and held onto the sill. The ground looked far away, too far, but I was already committed. I took a deep breath and let go. I heard a crunch, and then I passed out.

I woke up to Heidi shaking me.
“How long was I out?” I asked as soon as I felt less stunned.
“Only like a minute, don’t worry about it. Did you get it?”
“Yeah,” I rubbed my temples. “Am I broken anywhere?”
“I don’t think so,” she held out the “o” as she scanned my body. “You look good.”
“I want to get up,” I grabbed her hand and sat up, I gasped as I felt a sharp pain in my back, ”What the hell?”
“What?” Heidi looked around, trying to figure out what I was going on about.
“My back,” I said twisting to look at it.
Heidi walked around me and laughed, “Oh he is going to be so mad about this,” she giggled.
“What?” I demanded. “What is it?”
“You landed on his laptop.”
“What the- how… why the fuck is there a laptop out here?” I sputtered.
“He likes to study outside, I don’t know,” She shrugged.
“Whatever, let’s just go,” I got up.
“Ok, what about Hannah?”
“I am not interrupting that.”
“Me neither, let’s go,” she giggled.
