"It's just the wind..." I think to myself. At least, I HOPE it's the wind. We hear another sound—it's a book dropping from the tall bookcase behind us. Ben and I exchange startled glances. I bend over from my seat and pick the book up. But I almost drop it and run, because it has strange, ancient-looking symbols on it—just like the story. I open it. Inside, there's a riddle written in neat hand writing and black ink.
"Maybe this isn't what I think it is..." I think and hope.
A chill races down my back and I pull my hood closer. I look at Ben, who seems to be inspecting the door. It doesn't seem to be moving.
"Well, there goes our way out..." I think to myself.
I flip the page and my heart skips a beat. Inside those two pages lies a golden bird necklace.
"Ben!" I shout in the quietest way possible. He looks over.
"C'mere!" I quietly shout, my voice filled with fear and panic, "Look at what I found!"
He comes over and stoops down to see the book. I show him the bird necklace. His face grows pale and his breath quickens.
"We have to get out of here..." He says in a panicked, slightly shaky voice.
"Wait, there was something else!" I state shakily.
I turn back to the page that had the riddle. I begin to read it aloud, it says—
“Read this book if you dare,
Though you've unleashed something you're unaware.
What you seek, cannot be found,
Though we are here,
We make no sound.
This journey's not for the faint of heart,
But you cannot leave, for you already did start.
Now you must give up your soul,
And make true the legends told.
Don't mess with things you don't understand,
For you are trapped, and we have the upper hand."
After I finish reading this, a chill sweeps through the house. Then, quiet at first, but then growing louder, we both hear crying and shouting mixed with insane laughter. Ben and I exchange terrified looks. I drop the book as if it were a bomb or on fire. The necklace falls out. We slowly back away and the evil laughter grows louder. We bump into the wall behind us. I quickly turn around. It turns out that we had backed into a shelf with some old pictures. I stare at them for a moment, my gaze transfixed upon them.
Suddenly, I hear a loud yelp that was quickly muffled. I turn around quicker than I though was possible. So fast, that I almost fall over. My face drains of all color. I see Ben being dragged away by his heels by a young girl.
