I scream and run. She chases after me. I find the kitchen and the back door. I bust it down and run like I've never run before in my life! Not daring to look behind me, I keep running. Tripping on rocks and tree roots. After about ten minutes of non-stop running, I slow my pace down to a fast jog instead of a sprint. I try to catch my breath as good as I am able. My throat and lungs are dry as a bone and aching like they've never ached before! My legs are screaming at me for a rest, but I don't stop. I refuse. I can't be caught. I have to live. I timidly look behind me. To my relief, nobody is there. Just the dark, empty woods. I heave a huge sigh of relief. Now, I can finally walk. As I slowly walk through the woods, a sense of peace sweeps over me, like a wave crashing onto a sandy beach. I finally can see the peaks of the tallest buildings and a few houses. It won’t be long until I can return home.
Despite my feeling of peace, a sense of fear still lingers on. I feel a chill, and a familiar feeling comes over me. I look behind me—no one is there. I keep walking. Now, it feels as if icy hands are loosely gripping my shoulders. I quicken my pace. Now, I sense someone is watching me. I feel as is someone is pulling me back. I resist and try to keep going. Fear starting to consume me, I break into a run, or more of, and terrified sprint. As I try to run, I realize I can't! I feel the icy hands of death pulling me closer, deeper into the woods. Then, I turn around and see the girl.
"Found you..." She says with a smile.
My heart beats faster.
Ka-thump.
Ka-thump.
Ka-thump.
I take a shaky deep breath.
"W-what do you want from me?" I ask timidly.
"You know very well what I want..." She replies.
I gulp.
"I want..."
"...your soul."
A stab of panic and fear pierces my heart.
To my horror, I find myself asking,
"Why do you need it?"
She smiles and replies,
"I need it to be free and become more powerful. To get your soul, well, I think you already know what I have to do..."
I stay silent.
She smiles an evil smile, and as the black liquid begins to pour from her eye sockets and create tiny waterfalls of despair down her cheeks, she says with the voice of death itself,
"Y O U R T U R N..."
I try to run yet again, but it's no use. The icy hands of death are pulling me closer towards her, towards the cabin. I just want this to end.
I cry.
I scream.
I struggle.
I plead.
Nothing works.
Nothing can save me now.
The blade inches closer.
Closer...
Closer...
Until...
I jolt awake with a start. At first, I don’t know where I am. Then, I roll over. The glowing red numbers of my clock say 4:37am. I heave a huge sigh of relief and roll back on to my right side. I close my eyes...and go back to sleep. Not even noticing the golden bird necklace laying right on the night stand.
