Jonas
Jonas kept the paper from his breakfast burrito wrapped around it to keep the rain from ruining it, carrying it under the flap of his jacket as he exited the small shop and rushed towards the curb. He took a bite out of it once he got underneath a nearby awning at a bus stop, thick black gloves covering his hands from the slight September chill. For whatever reason Nick made him put them on and David seemed to agree that it was ridiculous.
"Aw come on Dad," Jo had said to Nick as he hovered near the door trying to avoid Nick's doting, ducking every time he tried to reach out and fix Jo's curly hair. "It's not even the middle of September and you're making me dress like we live in the tundra."
"Well it's cold outside," Nick argued, reaching out to zip up his jacket for him.
"Pops! Tell me you're not really gonna let him do this to me? We're in Missouri not Antarctica," Jo whined, pushing Nick away. David did his best to try and get Nick to lighten up but the man wouldn't budge and he ended up trying to compromise. It ended with Jo wearing an expensive jacket with fur lining the inside, a loose scarf, and the black gloves.
"Thanks a lot Pops," Jonas grumbled under his breath, lifting his breakfast burrito up to his lips to take a small bite. He knew he should have just agreed to living in the university's dorms instead of commuting from home. It helped that their apartment was in the city so he only had to walk a block to the nearest bus stop. It was there that he seemed to keep running into the same guy literally everyday.
Like literally running into him. He slammed into the tall bastard so hard yesterday that he felt a jolt and suddenly a headache came on. For the past two weeks they'd been doing that, and no matter how much Jonas mentally prepared for it they'd always manage to bump into each other. Whether it was knocking hot coffee into each other's laps or stomping one another's toes it was like the universe just wanted to see Jonas in pain.
That day Jonas hurriedly took a seat hoping that maybe if he just sat down he could wait for the guy to get on the bus first then follow after everyone else. Reaching up he adjusted his hearing aid, it felt weird having the thing hooked to his left ear. Half the time he didn't wear it at home, he mostly did it on purpose to avoid hearing his fathers' lectures, so when he did wear it it only felt uncomfortable but with his new life at the university he would quickly get back used to it again. Till then he was gonna turn it off to avoid having to listen to the boisterous strangers trying to navigate the sidewalk traffic.
Slouching on the bench Jonas pulled his phone out of his pocket just in time for someone to practically fall down onto the spot next to him, bumping into him on their way down and causing his brand new iPhone to fall onto the pavement and land on it's screen.
"Holy. Fucking. Shit." Jonas gaped down at his phone, grip tightening on his breakfast burrito tightening, debating whether he should pick it up. It wasn't a far drop, it was probably fine. But it fell right on its corner...
"Oh God, I am so sorry," Jonas looked to a familiar pair of lips, reading them as best as he could. They were the same lips that had been saying sorry to him since late August that fateful day coffee got all over his hundred dollar white jeans.
Licking his lips Jonas rubbed at his thigh, trying his best not to go off on the man.
"It's fine," he mumbled, his hearing aid was still turned off and he didn't want to end up accidentally yelling.
"I'm sorry what?" the man's lips moved rapidly as he said something Jonas could only assume was a string of sorry's and I can't hear you's. The man stared at him a moment, blue eyes squinting at him before he reached up to tap his ear. "Can you not hear me?"
Sighing Jonas reached up and turned his hearing aid back on, but not before the man frowned and started to sign to him.
"I'm sorry," he said, hands moving slowly as if he weren't quiet sure he had the gestures down, "If the screen is cracked I'll try and get it fixed for you."
Nodding his head Jonas waved him off, grumbling a, "No it's fine."
At least he didn't drop his breakfast burrito, though it was now crushed, the thought stuck with him as he reached down to grab his phone off the pavement ready to access the damage when the man next to him started to lean forward as well.
"I'll get it," he said with a soft smile, reaching for the phone, fingers brushing against the back of Jo's hand.
Not meaning to Jonas jumped at the sudden contact startling the man and making him drop the phone again. In a rush to hurry and snatch it away from him Jonas ended up butting heads with him, the back of his head hit the poor man in his nose and then there he was, gently pushing at it as a line of blood trickled down to his lips.
"It just keeps getting better," Jonas mumbled, slipping the strap of his bag off his shoulder. He knew he had some Kleenex in there somewhere.
"Thanks," the man said, gingerly taking the tissues from Jonas' outstretched hand before lifting them to his face and pressing them against his nose that was now flaring an angry red.
"It's nothing,"Jonas reached down to grab his phone, it had one thin line going across it, "it's the least I could do."
"I'm really sorry about that too." The man gestured towards his phone, eyeing the now cracked screen with a sympathetic smile.
"Oh no I'm the one who should be apologizing to you," Jonas exclaimed, "I mean I gave you a nasty nose bleed."
And he made him spill coffee on the both of them... And drop his Chinese take out all over the bus floor... And drop his house keys into a drain at the curb... And don't forget that time he made the poor man trip and fall onto his face while trying to push his way to the back of the bus. Okay maybe all of this was really Jonas' fault.
"Hey what's your name," Jonas asked, unlocking his phone to open up his contact list.
"Sky, why?" The man raised a brow at him, shifting on the bench to get a better look at what Jonas was doing. He looked ridiculous holding the tissue up to his nose and trying to keep his head tipped back while peering down. Jonas grip on his breakfast burrito loosened completely as the man's arm brushed against his causing Jonas to stiffen a little.
"So I'll have a name to add to your number." Jonas held out the phone for him.
"Oh you're good," the man said, lips curving up into an easy smile.
"Not really, you're still bleeding. I figured we could maybe go out for coffee or something, I'd pay," he shrugged, watching patiently as Sky typed in his phone number.
"I didn't mean it like that," the man said letting out a soft chuckle. He would have achieved pique nonchalance had it not been for how he was pinching his nose closed and speaking with a nasally tone into the tissue.
Blinking at him Jonas scooted back an inch before shaking his head vigorously as he felt his face get hot. "No I- I didn't mean it like that. I just... I just figured I could buy you lunch as an apology, it's an apology... An apologe- apologetic lunch? Yeah that's it. Nothing else."
"If you say so, not like I'd ever turn down free food," Sky chuckled.
Nodding his slowly Jonas looked down at his lap only to find that his breakfast burrito was sitting on the cold steel of the bench. Letting out a long sigh he sank further down, closing his eyes for a moment, he opened the just in time for the bus to come. Sky quickly got up to crowd near the entrance like everyone else with Jonas getting up a little slower, pissed off about his burrito as he came to stand behind the other man. When the doors opened Sky stepped aside to let Jonas get on first.
"After you," he said, lips curving into a smile as Jonas licked his own, taking that step forward. Jonas was still looking back when his foot slipped.
"Woah, woah. Are you okay?" Sky asked, hand instinctively flying towards the small of his back.
"No I'm fine. I'm totally fine!" Jonas blurted, face flushed as he hurriedly stepped back off the bus to let others pass.
"Are you sure?"
The look on Sky's face was laced with concern but that wasn't what had Jonas so flustered as the man reached forward again as if ready to grab hold of arm before stopping himself. No Jonas was fine. Definitely and totally fine.
Taking two steps to the left Jonas nodded his head. "No, absolutely. I'm fine."
