The little four limb sat frozen after my first attempt at speech. I honestly couldn't fault her for that, the memories made speech seem so easy. "Don't hurt me." she said pressing her self flatter against the trunk of the tree. That strange moisture glistened from her eyes as she began to shake again. Time to try again. I took a few paces back from the food and the four limb. Then I gestured again at the forage I had laid before her. Maybe she did not know how to feed herself? Possible. Our Larvae had to be fed by us in order to survive, should this four limb pup be so different?
I approached slowly, she immediately tensed and turned her head down, her eyes closed and body curled in vain defense. Deciding she did not want me close I retreated a few paces yet again. The only way she would glean meaning from my actions is if I were able to speak to her. So whilst keeping an eye cocked in her direction I proceeded to make sound and get used to me newly found voice. Humming and clicking. The four limb simply stared as I rehearsed.
"Are you trying to talk?" she asked, starting me a bit. It had been a stretch of the day, the sun rose almost to the midpoint. The little four limb had simply stared at me with the same look a caught rabbit might give a wolf. She was trying to communicate. So for the second time in my life, I attempted speech. "Wwwyyyyeeeeeiiiskskskk. Wyeis. Yeeis." Almost there. She cocked her head at this, and her eyes softened a bit. "You can understand me?" "Yeis. Yeskk. Yes." There we are! It seems though that by speaking I had opened floodgates of communication I was not yet prepared for. "Why did you carry me off?" "You ate that man!" "Well he was a bad man, but still you ate him!" "Where are we?" "Are you going to eat me too?" "Please, Please by the gods don't kill me!"
My mind scrabbled to grasp meaning from all of this words thrown upon me all at once. I settled on trying a word of reassurance to tell her I meant no harm. I pointed one of my forelimbs at her and spoke again "Sssskksssafee. Saafe. Safe." it was at least becoming easier. She Paused. "You aren't going to hurt me?". "Noooouuu." She seemed stunned for a moment, then I detected a growling from her abdomen which startled me a bit. She glanced longingly at the fruit I had gathered. So this is how to tell when a four limbs hungers? Their abdomens gurgle. Strange but at least the signal was clear.
I approached slowly again, she still tensed, but she was not trembling this time at my approach. Progress at least. I scooped up one of the fruit and extended it at the end of a forearm to her. "K-k-ffood. Eat-k-k." She tentatively grabbed it from my extended grasper. "You want me to have this pear?" she questioned. "Yes." I replied and motioned to the other foodstuffs as well. This may take some time, but for now, maybe she understood that I wasn't going to harm her. She ate with vigor, apparently she had been very hungry. She at up all of the fruits and a few of the roots leaving the soft woods untouched. Seeing as she must not eat that I picked a few choice hunks for myself and began chewing absently.
This was a better start than I had expected.
