The secret wish

Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Jan 28, 2019

Noah felt school as a new place as she had been to school after a period of almost a year. All her friends had already moved on to the next standard. The kids who were studying with her were the ones who were a year younger than her. Everyone came near her when the class ended and introduced themselves to the 'new girl'. Noah had felt the joy like never before and she was happy that she was back to normal, until one day, when the sports festival began. Noah had given her name to relay race without telling her parents. She had thought that she was completely healed of the ailment she had within. But once she started running, she felt her whole world turning black and at the end line, she collapsed hitting hard on her face.

She was immediately taken to the doc of the school. He treated her bleeding nose but panicked when he found her increased pulse, which was way more than normal. When her parents were contacted they rushed to the school to pick their daughter up. And she was immediately admitted to the hospital, she had been in about a year. And that was the last time Noah had attended her school continuously for a month after being diagnosed. She studied in the hospital for the exams for becoming eligible for the next class, but she could never attend the school as she used to do before.

Shaan and Anya slowly came near the door of Noah's room. There was a small paper that was stuck on the door with some words written on it with the calligraphic ink. It read "Trespassing is not allowed, but mama and papa are always welcome!" and when they opened the doors, the room's smell was a mixture of fresh paint, unopened boxes of toys and the novels and textbooks that were neatly arranged. The room was lit by the sun of noon and the room glinted yellow. The curtains were deep red and there was a small table near the window with some scattered papers on it. Anya stood in the doorway and Shaan moved with caution balancing himself, so that he wouldn't accidentally step on one of the toy cities that Noah had built whenever she was granted a day or two from the hospital, but today the doctor had said

"Noah is going to live six months more."

Anya was thinking about it and her eyes got wet again. she came out of thoughts when Shaan called her out and held a piece of paper with a drawing. Anya stood in the doorway for some time and that was the time Shaan said

"Anya do you know there's a saying called, You can either come in or go out as my doors are always open, but don't stand in the doorway as it blocks traffic..."

Anya gave a snicker with the tears she was holding falling off her eyes.

"You are a rascal..." Said, Anya, as she crossed the room and came close to Shaan. He took the paper out of her sight and said coming closer

"That's why I married a girl like you!"

He leaned in and kissed softly on Anya's lips when he sensed that Anya was still lost in the thoughts of Noah. He slowly whispered

"Look what our little princess secretly wishes for..."

He brought the paper in front that he was hiding to his back.

"But..."

Shaan kissed her again, but this time on her cheeks and held her tightly. There was stern tone to his voice when he spoke

"I know... But this is the best thing we can do for her before she leaves..."

"Don't... say such words..."

Said Anya breaking down in Shaan's arms.

Dr. Vivek was circling his chair, thinking about an answer to the question of the couple. He used to raise his head to answer something, but would suddenly recline and circle again thinking about something. The room was painted with enamel white and adorned with all the certificates that were hung on the wall. Some of the photographs showed the young doc receiving some award from the people who had great influence. With all the things in place the only thing that was absent was any type of sound. He sat at last and said looking towards Shaan

"It can be really dangerous, she is holding onto life with just a thread."

"But what if we make her so much happy that it heals her system?"

Asked Shaan looking into Vivek's eyes and anticipating an answer that was satisfactory. Vivek almost smiled because of Shaan's question

"How much ever happy you make someone you cannot generate back the lost bone marrow cells, I hope you understand this Mr. Shaan. I shouldn't say such words but miracles are just an illusion created by mankind to hope for a better tomorrow."

Anya didn't look at Shaan. She was opposing him since the beginning, she just wanted to stop him and this felt like a perfect opportunity.

"Then we should cancel this? Right doctor?"

"I never said so..."

snapped Vivek looking up. His puffy face and receded hairline shined as he brought his head back down.

"Mr. Shaan if she wishes for it, so be it..." He smiled "Miracles do happen sometimes!" And looked into Shaan's blue eyes

I know what you are thinking Mr. Verma, I can see the concern in your eyes and I understand. what if... Noah...

"Well make the arrangements and I will talk with Noah! This will be a surprise for her."

Shaan smiled and Anya put up a smile. She still thought

But what if...
