Over three thousand years ago, there lay a village. the village was small and poor, but in that village lived a beautiful young girl. she had hair the color (or as red as) of the sunset. on the outer edge of her village there was a vast forest, and every evening a pack of wolves came out and would sit on the hillside, howling to the rising moon. the girl would sit by her window and listen to them sing to the havens.
One evening, just like any other, the pack of wolves made their way to the hillside to welcome the night. but on this evening, some traveling hunters were in the village, and when they heard the wolves, they went into a panic, grabbing their arrows and spears and ran out of the village inn, yelling "It’s not safe! The wolves are coming to kill!" everyone in the village knew the wolves haven't harmed them, but they so began to doubt their own safety, living so close to the forest, after all. so everyone ran into their homes and locked their doors, but the girl fearing the packs safety, ran after the hunters.
As the pack fled from the hillside and back into the forest, close behind was the hunters and a few village men chasing them. the young girl followed close behind, trying not to be seen by the men. the small group made their way through the trees, shooting at the wolves, who were leaping over bushes and rocks. the chase continued till the moon was high in the sky, and the small hunting party had the wolves surrounded near a river further in the forest. when the girls caught up with the men, four of the wolves have been wounded, as one man raised his arrow to shot, she pushed the weapon into the air screaming "Stop it! They've done nothing! Please stop."
But her words have fallen on unreasonable ears. the man pushed her off and took aim again. this time the girl ran in front of the arrow, allowing just enough time for the wolves to escape. the men yelled at her to move, but when she wouldn't, one man took aim at her.
"We'll tell you once more girl, move or I’ll be forced to shoot you as well", he told her, but she still wouldn't move. then...
The girl stood surprised, a shot was fired, and the men were just as surprised. one of the men in the group shot a single arrow through the girl’s chest (heart). horrified the men ran back towards the village, leaving the girl for dead. after the left, the pack of wolves returned to where the girl laid. nudging the girls hands, began to howl in sorrow. one wolf lay next to her body, as though she was merely sleeping.
after several sad moments, a beautiful woman came out of the woods, as though she was called to where the wolves were. she sat on the opposite side of the young girl, stroking her long hair. the wolves began to whine at the pain of their wounded friends, and loss of the young girl. the woman paused, listening to the wolves, and thought of a way to help. continuing stroking the girl's hair, said in a soft voice, "It seems as if your death has made these wolves upset. so to put them at peace I shall help."
Then the woman stood up, and holding her arms towards the moon cried, "Fellow immortals, allow this girl to live once more!" then out of the forest more people came, looking as beautiful as the first woman, they stood around the girl, extending their hands to the sky and began to chant. as they began, the wolves stood in a circle around the girl, then the first woman said aloud, “this human girl has shown the wolves compassion and in return I shall allow her to live again as an immortal, as a wolf spirit. no longer will you live by your mortal name, for hence forth you will be called Kuri-mu, the wolf spirit".
