Kita tucked in the last corner of the sheet on his bed and looked around. He was satisfied with what he saw. The move had taken him less than two days, and now he lived on the other side of the country, in a place where he could get lost in a crowd. He walked to the giant window of the penthouse suite and sighed in pleasure. The lights of the city beamed like stars. The hum of the city tickled his bones with the possibilities it suggested.
It was as if the city itself were alive, and Kita was quite sure this was a real possibility. There were stories handed down by Yokai that whispered of the oldest cities forcing evil to leave. Oh, Kita was not speaking of human evil. That sort of evil lasts only a blink in the grand scheme of things. The stories talked about the sort of evil that lasts for an eternity. Things that wanted to destroy creation.
Well, if the city was alive, then maybe it would keep Fate away. All the goodness knows that what he did to Kita was just pure evil. Why would someone ruin a perfectly good encounter with a beautiful woman? Who plays such a horrible prank on an unsuspecting fox? Kita flipped his long hair over his shoulder and made a hmph sound as he walked away from the window.
Enough of that, Kita thought to himself. He was moved in, he was dressed to please, it was time to go have some fun. He grabbed his bag, slung it over his shoulder, crosswise over his body and found his way outside.
He took a deep breath and exhaled in a giant sigh. This city was so big and full of new smells and sounds! If he wasn't wearing a special enchantment the people would be staring at his ears, poking up from the top of his hair. He could still feel them like little ghosts, dipping and turning with every new sound. Kita's real ears funneled the sounds to his magic created human ears that sat where normal human ears should be. It was one of those works of magic that he was particularly proud of. They even felt real to him if he touched them.
That last thought made him remember when Fate barely brushed against one of Kita's magic ears and he felt his face heat. No! He shook his head and refused to think of that man again. Tonight was about having fun not getting upset by unpleasant thoughts.
Kita hummed as he walked around the city. So many of his kind couldn't handle modern life, they were silly. There was so much convenience in modern times! Cars zoomed so fast you could get somewhere in a blink, almost faster than magic! Indoor plumbing and baths anytime you wanted without more than a passing effort. Women could do what they wanted without being severely beaten or killed by their kin, which meant he could woo them without having to worry for their safety... well that last one was only in certain parts of the world, but Kita knew that would eventually be true everywhere given enough time.
He turned a corner and almost ran into an arm that was thrust out in front of him. Kita backed up a pace and hands on his back stopped his progress. He was surrounded by black leather clad men. The man who still held his arm out smirked at him.
Kita inhaled their scent and groaned internally. These men were all Bakeneko, Cat Spirits, though surprisingly they weren't asian like he was, or at least most of them weren't. Most of the Neko he'd known growing up had all been small with dark hair and eyes. These men ran the gambit of color. Red haired and blue eyed, blonde and green, brown and gray, gray and black, and any mixture of the aforementioned. They were all much taller than he was too.
Kita was surprised and intrigued at their differences from what he knew. Enough so that he let himself be pushed and bullied farther into a back alley. Fighting a bunch of Neko wasn't what he had planned for his night, but nothing seemed to be going his way lately.
