A month had passed since the incident with the guards. The pair, plus Emily now moved every two nights, only unpacking in a sense the things they needed to sustain basic needs. Patrick wanted to bring up the idea of moving to a neighboring village, and staring anew, but he knew that would jeopardize everything. Grace walked over to her friend, who was sharping a dagger he had.
"You going to keep staring, or ask what you want to ask?"He speaks, startling Grace who quickly regained her composer.
"What do you want to do?"She asked him, taking a seat next to him on the soft grass. Patrick took a time to think, should he ask? Or is that to selfish? Taking a deep breath he just went for it.
"I want to move to the neighboring village, it that too selfish?"He asks, terrified she'll get up and leave just for wanting something. Grace smiled at him, and shook her head.
"No, it's not.I'm selfish for focusing on Emily a lot.."Grace pointed out, and it was Patrick's turn to shake his head,
"She's your girlfriend, I'm just a brother."He explained, Grace's heart breaking at what Patrick thought of himself.
"Yeah, your my brother meaning you and Emily come first."Grace said, not believing her friend -no- brother thought so low of himself. Patrick stood up, putting the dagger back in it's sheath.
"So, we going?"Grace asked with a grin, trying her best to cheer up her brother. Patrick spun around so quick Grace though he would get whip lash, he had a huge smile on his face, his eyes lighting up at Grace's words.
"Hell yeah, we are!"He said happily, before jumping up and dragging Grace to the tents. She could tell he wanted to go, the childish wonder he had to him made her smile wide.
It was dusk when the two got to the village called, Lerwick a farming based village. Patrick looked at his companion, grinning. Emily's large black eyes stared him down, she twisted her head to the right, before taking off and flying forward.
"Well, looks like she wants to get moving."Grace commented and the pair moved to the crow's protests. Patrick bumped into a young girl, maybe a year or two older he couldn't really tell. He held out his hand and when the girl was about to take it a male, who seemed to be the girl's boyfriend shoved him back. He quickly studied the male, he had a stocky build yet he was shorter than him, he must be a guard or something of the sorts.
"Trying to steal my girl, bud?"The male said cockily. Definitely a guard Patrick thought.
"No, I was just helping her up after I bumped into her."He explained and the male scoffed,
"Sure you were, why don't you and death girl get lost huh?"He said, implying just because Emily was relaxing on Grace's shoulder she was now a death girl. Emily seemed to notice and she didn't take it lightly. She flew at him, pecking him repetitively in the head. Grace quickly moved to stop her girlfriend, even though you could see she wasn't trying to laugh. She scooped Emily up, holding her under her wings and handed her to Patrick. She quickly scanned to male up and down and scoffed herself.
"One, I'm not a 'death girl'.Two, Pat wasn't trying to steal your girl, he's not even interested in people in anyway."Grace explained as Patrick stroked Emily head, trying to calm her down. The male scoffed and left, leaving his so called girlfriend to fend for herself. The girl stood up,
"Thanks, I'm guessing your new here. I'm Lou."She introduced herself. Grace smiled at the girl,
"I'm Grace, that's Patrick and the crow's Emily."Grace explained. Lou nodded, gave them one last smile before leaving. Patrick looked at Grace as Emily rested on his finger, her claws tightly gripping his pointer finger.
"That was interesting."He commented, as he lifted his finger and letting Emily climb onto his head and Grace gave a short laugh.
"Yeah, it was.We staying in the hotel or do you want to camp out again?"She asked, Patrick violently shook his head.
"I'm sleeping in a real bed tonight, you can camp out if you want."He said, jokingly. Grace swatted his arm.
"I'm not sleep on the ground again mister."She said as the made their way to the market place, the center of the village, the sun was setting and most of the people on the streets were entering their homes, ready to end a day of work with a good night's sleep. The pair looked around, trying to find something that remotely looked like an inn. Just about as the pair were going to give up hope, they heard a voice as it got colder out, as it was late fall.
"Grace? What are looking for?"Lou asked, rushing over. As the sun now set, setting the village in a blanket of darkness.
"The inn, you know where it is?"Patrick explained as he pulled his thin jacket closer, wishing he had something warmer. Grace noticed, making her worry if they were going to have to sleep outside again tonight.
"Yeah, I think there's one more room open."Lou explained, before turning on her heel and quickly leading the three to the inn. She stopped in front of a tall, town hall looking building. It was made out of brick it had dark oak doors, and a wood roofing. Lou turned to the two, giving them a smile.
"I'll pay for it.As a thanks."She said handing them three gold coins before quickly leaving, like she shouldn't be out at this time. Grace entered first, holding the door open for Patrick who quick entered, glad to be somewhere warm. A elderly woman greeted them with a smile, before speaking.
"Travelers?"She questioned. Patrick shrugged,
"Yeah, you could say that."He said placing the coins on the counter. The old lady hastily collected them, sliding them into her apron pocket. She turned and grabbed a key, handing it to Patrick.
"Room 32, have a good night."Was all she said before she left, seemingly going home. Patrick gripped the key tightly in his hand, making his way up the stairs as Grace tailed behind. The pair found the room, unlocking it and quickly kicking off the worn shoes they had, plopping in the bed not caring if they were undressed or not.
