Grace scanned over the ingredients again, just to make sure she knew she had everything. She would need a Raven Reds, a berry bush that helps ravens shift from raven to human. It might not work on people who got cursed to become a raven, who knows if it'll work. All she would have to do is switch Whispering Willows for Raven Reds, and it might work. Grace looked over at Emily, seeing her asleep. Deciding she'll need sleep herself. Marking the page before closing the book. Stretching, she quickly got under the covers and soon fell asleep.
Ken waved Patrick over, who quickly walked over, placing plates down on tables as he went. Ken smiled at the boy,
"You did a good job tonight lad."He spoke, Patrick smiled at the older male.
"Thanks.Do you need me to stay later to lock up?"He asked,
"No, you can go home. You'll get your coin by the end of the week."Ken explained. Patrick nodded, quickly entering the backroom, changing. Leaving the tavern, walking to the inn.
When he entered the room he saw Grace and Emily asleep. Smiling to himself, he joins Grace under the covers, getting a good night's rest.
The next morning, Grace awoke to Emily staring down at her, sitting up Grace letting Emily's talons curl around her finger. Grace moved to the desk, letting Emily hop off her finger, as she opened the book, checking everything over once more before mixing everything she would need. She heard the bed creak, implying Patrick was up.
"You sure this might work?"He asked,
"Positive."She replied, determined to finally fix this.
"Alright, good luck to ya then Grace."He said, turning onto his left side, pulling the blanket over himself, getting some sleep before he had to go into to work that night, not having to work on the fields today. Grace rolled her eyes at him, storing the new mixture into a glass jar, latching the lid shut before pushing it to the back corner of the desk. Getting up, Grace pushed the chair in looking over her shoulder at Patrick, seeing he was in a calm, blissful sleep. The young teen smiled, she knew how hard it was for him to get a wink of sleep. Exiting the room, and then the inn.
She wandered, looking for Lou's house, hoping to talk to her;Grace wanted her new friend to join them but she knew it was a long shot, who would want to travel with two banished freaks? No one in their right mind, that's who. Maybe it would be a good thing if she didn't ask..who knows when they would have to move again? Things were great here, but it was all to quiet for her and definitely Patrick's liking.
She heard a bell ringing, confused she followed the sound, wondering what or who was making the noise. She soon saw a large crowd, and as she pushed her way forward she soon understood why:It was her father, selling a new line of clothing her mother had made. Frozen in fear, her mind went back to when her mother found her wearing the dress she worked so hard on, reduced to threads, like an animal had torn the dress itself.
"Grace!Darling come here, mommy has something to show you!"Grace watched, wanting to warn the seven year old version of herself not to put on the dress, maybe if she didn't put on the dress she could have stayed...even if it was just for a year, she would have been happier.
"Coming Mommy!"The younger Grace called, running to where her mother sat in her studio, making the dress she was going to wear for her aunt's wedding. The scene changed, Grace saw her younger self smile wide with pure innocent and happiness, as she looked at the beautiful violet dress her mother had made for her by hand. Her mother smiled at her, there was a loving look in her eyes, not the shocked and petrified one she saw minutes later. Her mother-no, the mother she knew- kissed the younger one's head, giving her a soft, motherly smile before speaking,
"Why don't you try it on?"She suggested, Grace started to scream, he voice desperate, if she didn't try it on, everything would have be different, just for a little longer. She would still be outcasted no matter what she did that night, it would only take more time.
"DON'T!PLEASE DON'T!" Yet, her voice fell deaf to the seven year old ears. Grace felt tears roll down her cheeks, she couldn't save herself, this was destined to happen, and she once again wished she was never born.
The scene switched again, now the young Grace was alone in the room, trying on the dress when blue sparks and green wisp of magic swirled around the young girl, clutching her head in pain she screamed a bloodcurdling scream, Grace doing the same. Once the screaming stopped, so did the magic, most of it anyways; the blue sparks were gone yet the green wisp stayed, forming a symbol of a crumbling castle. Grace's mother rushed back into the studio, seeing the dress she spent weeks on torn to simple threads. She rushed over to her young daughter, embracing her tightly.
"Are you alright sweetie?"She asked, holding her daughter out at arm's length, that when she saw the symbol, now a brand of what her daughter was.
"Gavin!"Her mother called, her father soon appeared, seeing what his daughter became. The scene changed again, now her parents were arguing in the foyer, thinking their daughter was asleep in her bed. Yet she was tightly clutching the railing of the stairs, hidden from sight.
"We need to get rid of her Giovanna! We can't have a Ruin as a daughter! It'll ruin the business!"Her father argued, his face red with anger.
"She's just a child!Maybe we can control it!"Her mother argued back, not wanting her only child gone.
"She's still a freak!Just like Preston's boy!"Gavin screamed, if Grace was asleep before she would be awake now.
"So you want to kill our own daughter?"Her mother screamed back, Grace flinched back when hearing what her mother had said, was she going to end up like that boy the mentioned? She stood, walking down the stairs, leaving the safety of her hiding spot.
"Mommy?Am I going to die?"She asked as tears fell, knowing she wasn't the daughter they wanted anymore. Her parents whipped around, staring at her before glancing back at each other.
"No, your not going to die sweetie.."He mother said, softly in that motherly tone she always used as she cupped Grace's cheeks.
"Go back to sleep, sweetheart.Me and mommy are just talking."Her father said as he ran a hand through his dark brown, black looking hair. Nodding she turned and went upstairs and back to bed, hoping if she listen and did everything she would be able to stay and control it like her mother said she could.
When she awoke, she look around, seeing she was inside a old, dusty cabin that no one seemed to have lived in for years. Hearing a voice, she rushed outside, her feet getting poked by rocks and sticks each time she set her foot down. Seven year old Grace looked down at herself, seeing she was in her nightgown.
"They brought me here when I was asleep.."She whispered to herself, hearing the voice again, running towards it she hoped to see her parents but her face fell when she saw a boy two years older than her, she smiled at him, happy just to see someone.
"Hi, I found a cabin if you want to stay with me...I'm Grace!"The girl said happily.
"W-why are you out here?"Patrick asked wishing he didn't have a stutter. Grace looked at the forest floor, upset.
"I'm sorry if I..."Patrick started but Grace cut him off,
"It's okay my parents outcasted me, I'm guessing that happened to you too?"She asked as they made their way to the small cabin the would call home for the rest of their lives. Patrick shook his head, as the tears trailed down his cheeks like rivers.
"N-no....m-my m-momma a-and p-papa t-tried t-to k-kill m-me a-and it w-was b-because I-i'm d-different, that's what my Papa said."He explained, choking on his tears. Grace hugged him, understanding he was the 'Unknown' boy her family was talking about. She smiled at him and whipped away his tears as they settled on the dusty couch.
"Well it seems we only have each-other now, Patrick."She explained.
