The Hitman YoYos practiced in a rented warehouse near the pier. Jun sat beside Kyungwon looking over the river and the musician situated his guitar under his arm.
“Let me show you what I have so far.” He strummed and began to play. He hummed a tune. The chorus had words, though. Or rather, one word repeated. “Rainbow.” When Kyungwon finished, he looked at Jun. “I took your advice about repeating.
“It's beautiful.”
“You are.”
Jun froze before his face turned fire engine red.
Kyungwon seemed to realize what he'd said. “I mean, uh. OH! RIGHT, THE FANS CALLED YOU UGLY, BUT YOU'RE NOT. I DON'T WANT YOU TO FEEL BAD.”
“HAHA. I KNOW. IT'S FINE.”
“ANYWAY, SO I FEEL IF YOU PAINT, I'LL FIND WORDS FOR THE CHORUS.”
“SURE.” Jun wondered why they were yelling. “I'VE GOT MY SUPPLIES. LET'S GO.”
They headed to the warehouse. As Jun painted, Kyungwon strummed his guitar and jotted things down in his notebook.
“Um… your current lyrics.” Jun said after half an hour. “How do you come up with them?”
“I just think of pretty words or stuff that's happened to me.”
Jun nodded. “When I paint, I try to communicate things I've seen that left an impression on me. And I focus on one thing. If it was colors I saw, I'll just paint an abstract piece with those colors. If it was a sunset, I'll paint that. If it was something someone said, I'll use those words and paint things that evoke what those words mean around them.”
Kyungwon nodded. “So, if I do the same thing… for example my lemon song. I'd either sing about the sunset or about the lemon juice in my eye?”
“Oh, I wasn't saying you have to do what I do! I just thought sharing my process might be helpful. But it's probably different for lyricists. It might be better to hear from one of those.”
“No. Jun, your colors are beautiful. I want the song to be inspired by you.”
“Oh,” Jun mumbled.
“I'll take your advice for my other songs, though.”
Jun nodded. “I don't know if I ever told you, but, uh, your voice is beautiful too.”
Kyungwon gazed at Jun. He slowly leaned forward and Jun closed his eyes.
Oh my god! He's going to kiss me! I'm going to have a musician boyfriend! I'll no longer be a lip virgin!
Jun felt something soft on his nose. He opened his eyes and saw Kyungwon blushing at his lap.
What the hell?! Jun thought. You're supposed to kiss my lips. That's kind of cute though.
“You'll come to next Friday's show, right?” Kyungwon cleared his throat. “Scouts are going to be there and I'm a bit nervous."
“Of course.”
“Thanks, Jun. Then, let's continue.” He strummed his guitar and Jun looked back at his painting. Well, at least things were moving forward.
