When we finally got to the exit door leading to the surface it was completely coated in the static-like entity. The doors that had managed to hold it out for so many years had finally lost. Despite its material being the very alloy meant to destroy it, the distortion somehow managed to seep in around it. I took the edge of the scythe and cleared out enough of it to get a hold on the inside of the door. It was more like an automatic door, one that slides open on both sides, so it was not going to be so easy as to brute force it. Not that I was any good at doing that.
“It’s leaking in pretty badly.” GG said almost as if in admiration of how terrible it managed to get.
I slide the scythe in through the gap in the doors and tried to use the staff as leverage to pry open the door, which worked but only a little. I moved my arm into the gap and started pushing one side but even with that it wasn’t really moving. “Stupid. Door.” I said between breaths. I had finally got it open enough to wedge my shoulder in between the two doors. It gave enough support to push it open far enough for the rest of me to squeeze through it. “Are you kidding me?” I questioned unsure if it was out of annoyance for the door troubles or for the landscape that now greeted my vision. Just as I was about to speak, GG said exactly what was on my mind.
“This is a mess.” Her disgusted tone mirrored my own sentiments.
I gazed at the scene, completely flooded in the distortion. Even though I was standing on it, nothing seemed to happen. The idea that perhaps it was only active at a certain point, crossed my mind just as I spotted it. A roughly diamond shape object was floating and building up the distortion around it. It too had a static like pattern, but seemed almost to be a wider grain if you could call it that. The sounds it made were not in any language I could identify, but I could nearly understand it. It kept repeating something along the lines of ‘He must die.’ and ‘Kill him.”. It wasn’t a chore to guess who this ‘he’ was of course. “What is that?”
“The distortion seems to have localized to that point.” GG replied.
The distortion gathered very close to the center piece soon creating a circular entity that encapsulated the object like a membrane. Between the entities chants to kill me, I heard something peculiar. ‘Existence must die.’ Existence. Where have I heard that before? I couldn’t even stop to think about it, the thing started to move closer. I stood my ground and examined it closely hoping to pick up some behavioral patterns or anything to get the upper hand in my fight against it. But outside of my field of view it had managed to snake itself around my scythe and proceeded to pull on it.
I tightened my grip and soon got my other hand on the scythe pulling it away from the entity. “Hey, that’s mine!” I yelled only to realize it had gotten its strange tendrils wrapped around my ankles. It swiftly snatched me up and hung me upside down by one leg. The sounds it began to make at this point were no longer within my own perception and came across to me more like a repetitive sound.
I cut off the strand holding me up with the scythe and flipped myself back to my feet before hitting the ground. Despite managing this rather impressive feat, I was not in fact safe. “Eh!?” I felt something cutting right into my back, I looked down to see two tendrils poking out of my stomach. From the shadows creeping around my vision I could tell this must have killed me instantly. “Are you kidding me!?” I yelled cutting the tendrils off from behind me and right at that moment I knew, this was probably going to take all day.
