Kita filled his glass and drained it again. He started feeling the effects of the alcohol, it helped soothe the anxiety he was feeling. “Why does this matter involve you? You're one of the big bad gods in the echelon. If there were seven others who ascended, why are you here for me?” He poured another glass of wine.
“Because, you are different. You aren't like the other seven. None of the others found joy in their lives by the time they reached a millennium. They hadn't felt joy, love, or any other emotion for centuries.” He took a sip of his wine and set it back down before he continued. “You still feel.”
“I don't feel love.” Kita wafted his hand in front of his face and blinked, he felt a bit lightheaded, but didn't let that stop him from drinking more. He tipped the glass to his lips and almost missed, but he smiled in pride when he took a mouthful without spilling.
“You do.” Fate narrowed his eyes as he watched Kita's coordination start to fail.
“Nope. I refuse. That's how I survived this long. That's my secret.” He finished off the glass of wine and decided he'd probably had enough. He'd just drank the equivalent of about twenty large cups of human wine. He set the glass down on the table, but only half of the bottom met the table. It tilted in slow motion and fell onto a white patch of the carpet. The carpet was lush enough that the glass didn't break, but one drop of purple liquid splattered onto the surface.
“Oops.” Kita began to laugh as if that was the funniest thing he'd ever seen.
Fate's eyes widened and he watched in amazement. A gentle flush graced the fox's cheeks and his eyes crinkled when he laughed.
Kita saw Fate and his laughter intensified. He fell onto his side, rolled off the pillow, and held his stomach with both hands.
The god picked up his wine glass and emptied the contents in one gulp, before setting it aside. He stood up and walked around the coffee table. Fate picked up the fallen glass and set it next to his own, then looked down at the giggling fox. “You're drunk.”
“Yes.” Was all Kita could reply between his fits of laughing.
Kita felt like he was on an amusement ride. His head was spinning, but in a euphoric way. His stomach hurt from laughing and he realized he hadn't been this drunk or laughed this hard in a very long time. He knew he should be scared of the god, scared of ascending, even scared of being this drunk, but he couldn't find the effort to do so right then. He was relaxed and the wine had pushed his fears far away.
Fate knelt next to the fox and brushed a strand of long white hair out of his face. Kita's laughter finally settled and he smiled up at the god. His arctic colored eyes were glassy and slightly unfocused as they peered up from the floor.
The god groaned under his breath and rubbed his face, before looking at Kita again. “You're driving me crazy, little fox, and you don't even realize it.”
