“Wondered what?” I questioned with confusion.
“How long it would take.” He answered in riddles.
“How long what would take?” I questioned as my temper began to grow.
“For you to question meaning.”
“The meaning of wh-”
“The meaning of our lives.” He answered before I could finish my question. Then he turned his head to face me. “Some people pause in between thoughts; if you want an answer, then you need patience.”
“Oh.” I peeped with embarrassment as my eyes fell to the ground. I had no clue on what to say to the boy, it had been weeks since I had seen him and never had I questioned him. Yet here I sat, prepared to wage war with the only reality I knew anymore.
“Proceed.” He hummed softly as he gazed at the wilderness, specifically in the direction of the clearing in which we lived in.
“Well,” I began as my eyes returned to the wilderness, “I, um, I don’t know how to put this.” I stated as I turned towards him; however, he continued to stare at the wilderness. Lightly I cleared my throat and began again, “why are you never with us?”
“Never?” He mouthed.
“Well, not never. But why are you rarely with us? You brought us here, don’t you owe it to us that you’re actually here too?”
“Debatable.” He replied.
“But how is it debatable? You enticed us all to live here and yet here you are, sitting on some cliff on some mountain miles from us. I’ve never even been here, but apparently you’re here all the time. That doesn’t make sense.” I argued.
“I invited you to a new world. I did not invite you into my life.” He informed.
I sat there gaping, unsure what to say next or what to argue.
He then turned towards me momentarily to say, “oh, please don’t take that personally. I am stating facts, not referring to our unique relationship.”
“Oh.” I peeped.
The boy then resumed his stare at the wilderness and let out a soft sigh. “Now proceed.”
I sat in silence for a moment as I collected my thoughts and honestly there was a moment where I wanted to drop my anger and enjoy the pleasant moment with the boy I knew so little about. It hurt to fight someone who acted as a loving ruler in my life. However, I had to question my authority. He tore down the life I had prior to the new world and, after four years, I finally realized I should not have let him simply do this without a thought. How crazy of me. “You can say this isn’t personal, but it is. You took my whole life from me and turned everything upside down. Whether or not the new world is better does not matter, what matters is that you allowed me, at the age of thirteen, to leave one life for another and feel as if you owe me nothing. You owe me an explanation. You owe me information. You owe me your company!” I shouted at him.
