"My heart and its blackness is only rivaled by my father and the dreams of my brother."" - Dayvion Luna Mortalitas, leader of the Mortalitas Assassins
It was the eve of the 6th century after the Vulnus event. Kingdoms were in disarray, thousands of monarchs vied for control of thrones and lanf.
As if by magic the power structures of the land began to stabilize through a series of mysterious deaths.
Merchants became princes, princes became kings, and kings became solidified in power to create a lineage that would endure thousands of years. Or so should have been the case, but even these new monarchs were more likely to be killed than to stay in power long.
It was also during this time that we began to hear reports of an organization that operated within the shadows of our world, flitting from this city to that. Daughters and sons of darkness that would kill, but for a price.
The whispers became a roar as demand for their services became a not so dirty secret of the noble elite. Instead of working through problems, it would be a race to see who could hire Mortalitas assassins first.
Of course, working through problems this way was also destablizing. This left only a select few with the wealth to control an empire and hire these impactful assassins.
This incited civil war across the land as the havelorded their power over have-nots.
And then as swiftly as they appeared, they vanished.
Some say it was all intentional, their actions were purposeful, intended to completely destabalized the world for no other reason than pure entertainment. The blackest hearts enjoying the chaos that encircled them, yet could neither touch nor see them.
And yet there are others that merely state it was for coin, cold hard coin.
The final reason, for no reason at all.
The whispers of the Mortalitas assassins would not arise until two years ago. And then, their reign of terror would begin anew. And still, even after thousands of years, their origins and resurgence remain an enigma.
Edipagus put down the book he was reading from that chronicled the mysterious history, placing it carefully upon a pile of teetering books that lined his home. He was still dressed in his pajamas. The man waggled his finger and muttered to himself a few grumbles, before looking to a simple parchment on the table just beside the unsteady tower of knowledge.
The report read as follows:
"Dear Edipagus,
I hope this finds you well. I am reaching out to you because something does not seem right within Deiyil. Hopefully, this letter reaches you within two days, for after then it could be too late. I have reason to believe the Mortalitas assassins have a target within Deiyil. I would normally send this to their guard, but it appears that these assassins work for none other than the Speaker of Dol'Ron, Diametries Maus Aquaetus. Their target or targets is wholly unknown to me, but you are the only person I trust to deliver this message to the Deiyalian government within Deiyil. I implore you, take this letter to Chancellor Mayweather," - Stark Mac Brandt
Edipagus contemplated the letter from his friend, the traveling force magus. Finally, he nodded and put the note away.
"I will take this directly to Chancellor Mayweather, but first I have to meet with my good friend Penndarius, he always brings me such exciting new knowledge."
