Short description: It's Vaughn's birthday, and Kaz is determined to make it as good as he can. Quick disclaimer: Vaughn doesn't belong to me, he's my friend's character (who I wrote this for)
Kaz hummed softly, tapping his foot against the pale white tile absently as he danced in place to the radio. He flipped the final piece of french toast, sliding it onto the plate he had set aside. He knew he was probably making a little too much for two people, but he couldn't bring himself to care. It was Vaughn's birthday, and he planned on making sure the day was perfect. He had made sure to start breakfast quietly, even going as far as replacing his body with one of the pillows in the bed when he had gotten up to make sure Vaughn stayed asleep as long as he could. It had been almost an hour since he had gotten up, and he had scrambled to make sure the card and flowers he had gotten his boyfriend were placed neatly in the middle of the rickety kitchen table. Kaz set the french toast off to the side, setting it carefully next to the bacon he had cooked prior. He had made almost half a pack since he knew he would eat an unreasonable amount himself, and he absolutely had to make sure that there was enough for Vaughn.
Turning around to unplug the griddle, Kaz ran smack into Vaughn's chest. He blinked, adjusting his slightly crooked glasses as he looked up at his boyfriend. "Morning, Vaughn," he hummed, and the taller man smiled softly, pressing a good morning kiss to his cheek.
"Morning, baby," Vaughn hummed, voice a little rough from having just woken up. He wrapped his arms around Kaz gently, pressing a loving kiss to his forehead. Kaz chuckled softly, grinning up at him before turning back to the griddle. Vaughn waited for him to unplug it and set it aside before wrapping his arms around the other's waist again, resting his chin on Kaz's head. "Awful lot for breakfast. Some sort of special occasion?" he asked softly, cool grey eyes flickering across the counter, taking in the excessive amount of food that had been made.
"Yup. One of the most special occasions of all," Kaz hummed, smiling to himself as he walked over to the coffee maker. He had already made himself a cup or two, and Vaughn's was just finishing brewing. Grabbing a mug from the side of the coffee maker, he filled it with the fresh coffee before setting it to the side for Vaughn to take. The mug he had gotten out was tacky, but Kaz knew it was his boyfriend's favorite. It was a dark, marble blue with the words "World's Best Boyfriend," written in gold cursive that shimmered faintly when the kitchen lights hit it. He had bought it for him on their six month anniversary, and his heart fluttered faintly at the memory of how happy Vaughn had been when he had given it to him. Vaughn moved to Kaz's side, one arm still wrapped around Kaz's waist as he opened the creamer and poured some into his coffee.
Vaughn began to hum softly, the radio in the background beginning to play one of his favorite songs. He stirred his coffee, drumming his fingers along Kaz's side absently as he did so. Kaz grinned as he listened to Vaughn hum, that odd warm feeling working its way into his chest. He chose not to say anything, his love's happiness being all the payment he needed. "Go sit down baby, I'll bring your plate over," Kaz said softly, pressing a kiss to Vaughn's cheek. The taller man nodded, going to sit down at the table. Kaz went to make the plates, but stopped at the soft gasp from the direction of the table. He turned around to find Vaughn standing in front of the large bouquet of flowers, a look of astonishment on his face as he took in the display. Kaz's grin turned to something along the lines of a soft, lovestricken smile as he went back to making plates.
He grabbed the plates, setting each down at his and Vaughn's respective chairs. Kaz slid into his, the old, dark wood creaking as he sat down. Vaughn stood there for a long moment before eventually sitting down, still staring at the flowers and card. Kaz did his best to ignore a pang of anxiety as he watched Vaughn's reaction. Did he like them? He glanced over at the display, searching it for any sign that something might be somehow off. The flowers were arranged rather well, the assortment of intricate roses and wildflowers of several different colors tucked neatly in an old, chipped vase covered in faded cherry blossoms. The card, however, was simple, a dull orange envelope leaning against the vase with Vaughn's name written in shaky cursive. He had spent ten minutes just double and triple checking that it was centered earlier that morning.
Vaughn reached out for the back of his chair, still staring at the card and flowers. This was all for him? Kaz had done all of this? He resolved not to open anything just yet, deciding to eat breakfast first. After all, Kaz had made that for him too, and he would hate to let it go cold. Vaughn began to eat his toast, trying to take his time so he didn't seem too impatient. Kaz began to eat as well, foot tapping absently on the floor as he resisted the urge to squirm from anxiety. He picked a little at his food, managing to eat a few pieces of bacon in silence before he looked up. Vaughn had finished eating, and still hadn't stopped staring at the flowers. "You can open the card, you know?" the half-demon joked, trying to cover his anxiety with humor.
Slowly, Vaughn reached out, taking the envelope gently from its place against the vase. He flipped it over, using his thumb to carefully undo the seal. After a few long moments he pulled out a black and white card, seemingly handmade. The front was covered in cherry blossoms and crows, inked in black and accented in splotches of orange. There was nothing written on the front or the back, just the cherry blossom design that stretched across the card's outer expanse. Vaughn opened it gingerly, his eyes widening slightly as translucent, glowing crows fluttered out of the card, their orange and violet forms dissolving as they took flight. Kaz smiled widely as Vaughn read the card, mentally thanking his cousin for working the small enchantment into the card. His eyes widened a little as Vaughn began reading the card out loud, his lover's voice shaking faintly as he spoke.
"Dear Vaughn. It's been a little over a year since we first kissed at the minimart, and in that time you've managed to sweep me off my feet. You've killed me with your smile, stolen my soul with your laugh, and ran off with my love all in the short span of time we've known each other. You never had to tell me you love me, you've said it in everything you do. And yet you still found the words to say it, and every time you do my heart sends out a beacon that birds take as an opportunity to lift my heart off the ground. So happy birthday love. You deserve the world." As Vaughn read the last of the letter, he could feel himself tearing up. He blinked a few times, trying to clear his eyes before setting the card carefully on the table. When he looked up he was smiling widely, and Kaz felt his heart flutter at the sight.
Before Kaz had time to react, Vaughn was out of his chair and sweeping him off of his feet. The half-demon let out a small squeak, his surprise quickly turning to soft laughter as Vaughn held him in his arms, peppering his cheeks with kisses. Kaz reached up, wrapping his arms loosely around Vaughn's neck as he grinned up at his love, his chest feeling like it might just burst from happiness. Vaughn laughed softly along with him, pressing his face into the crook of Kaz's neck and leaving gentle kisses on the freckle-spattered skin. After a long moment he set Kaz down, beaming down at him as he hugged him closely to his chest. "I love you," he murmured softly, his usual stoic expression replaced now glowing with something soft and loving. Kaz beamed up at him, his smile so wide it was starting to hurt his cheeks.
"I love you too."
