I was born from my father, Poseidon, and my mother, a nymph. Soon after they were born, I was offered to protect Phrixus and Helle, children of Nephele, a cloud nymph who married Athamas, the king of Boeotia.
"Aries, your job is to protect Nephele's children as they grow. Nephele has always been a loyal nymph to us. But darkness will soon consume their kingdom and her children will not be spared. Do you understand, Aries?" I remembered Poseidon warning me.
Soon after telling those words, I was brought here to Boeotia, as a guard serving the children. Looking down upon the baby twins wrapped in silky cloths, I said: "Don't worry, I'll protect both of you no matter what." Their room a spacious room with baby toys all by a corner with colorful paintings decorated on each wall. Both babies sleeping soundly inside their wooden cribs.
"Aries, I'm thankful for your words. The boy is named Phrixus and the girl is Helle," Nephele explained gesturing to each of them. Her beautiful wavy hair's like the clouds with her silver eyes that's transparent like the fog. Her tan skin glowed a beautiful light bronze skin as she wore a simple chiton but with rich fabrics.
"Yes, Poseidon have told me their names."
Her smile frowned a little. "Poseidon? Why not call him father?"
"I can't. As of someone whose Mother is a nymph, I have no right to call him that."
Queen Nephele then lowered herself and hugged me gently. "What a cruel thing Fate has brought upon you," she whispered. It wasn't her words that made me shed the tears. It was the warmth that she gave to me as I comforted with her beating heart. Those of us who were born from lower society never had the luxury of seeing their parents simply because we weren't worth their attention. The first and last time I saw Poseidon was when he warned me about the fate of these babies.
That was the first and last time I shed tears.
The next day, I walked around the place trying to get familiar with this new place. I called it place, but it's actually a castle made of white stones. Traveling to the training area, I saw some maids walking towards me. They stopped and bow to me like I was superior. Only the king and queen knew of my true appearance. I guess Queen Nephele told them to treat me like this.
Ending up at a luxurious garden, I saw Athamas and Nephele having tea and sweets. "Oh, Aries, come have a drink with us," King Athamas said with a wide smile.
"But I shouldn't-," I tried to say.
"Don't worry about it, you're like a son to us," Queen Nephele replied warmly. Walking over slowly to the table, I sat down on a stone seat lowering my head. Queen Nephele pour me a drink and King Athamas handed me some sweets. Even though it tasted differently on my tongue, I appreciated their kind offers and ate with pleasure.
Later that day, I went back to the training area to the leader of the guards. "You want me to train you?" he asked. His height pretty short but his appearance was of a warrior with short gray hair with his eyes black as the night. Wearing a brown toga with metal armor around his body, his red cape trailing behind him.
"Yes, if you would please. I wish to be trained by you, Alexios," I replied. Alexios was the commander of King Athamas's warriors and had won him many lands. If I were to train with anyone, it would be him!
"If I train you then, I would have to treat you like everyone else. No exception."
I gripped my hands to show my determination. "That's completely fine! I want to be treated like one of you, I'm not a child of god so no need to treat me differently." I can see his eyes wavering as he stared down at the child in front of him spouting nonsense.
"Okay, we'll start now." He said petting my head with a nod. Guess he's a nice guy.
After changing my clothing for more appropriate attire. I met Alexios at the training field with my new short toga and black sandals made out of leather. "First, let's determine your strength. Try and come at me full strength." he positioned himself with a large sack in front of him. Readying myself, I took a step back before charging at him with my full strength. A loud bang sound echoed around us. Shock came to Alexios eyes as his body was thrown to the ground.
I then let go of him and stood up with Alexios following behind. "That's some strength you have there Aries," he said. I then look at my hands. "Is it your god strength?"
"No...maybe, I'm not-" I gasped. "How did you know?"
"Queen Nephele told me ahead of time about your situation. Don't worry, we are the only people who know about you."
"Oh. Um, I never knew I had this kind of strength before. Sorry about that."
Alexios smiled softly. "Don't worry about it. Okay, let's go on to the next thing."
Alexios lead me to the weapon rooms filled with many swords, shields, and weapons of any type built near the race track. "There are many types of weapons you need to know how to wield. One of them is a sword. Swords are a must in the battle when it comes to battling your opponents. But swords are not meant for everyone, there are also bows with arrows, spears, axes, and more. You just gotta find which weapon is best fit for you," he explained.
I look at all the weapons. "I can't decide at the moment."
"Okay, we'll start with the bow and arrow then."
We then went to the shooting area with targets displayed on the wall of the house. Alexios then took out an arrow and shot at the target. Perfect shot. "Looks easy right? You just gotta use your dominant eye and shoot. Don't worry about your positions or if you get the target. Today's goal is to determine your weapon," Alexios explained. "Here, use this bow. This was made for beginners only."
I took the bow and an arrow and did a position as Alexios instructed. Releasing the arrow, it hit the wall instead of the target. I tried a couple of times but never got near the target. Not surprising since I probably held it wrong. "Okay. let's now try the spear this time," Alexios with a spear in his hand.
He then swung the spear at the dummy and it was cut in half. Once again, he handed me a spear for practice. I swung it across another dummy and there was a shallow cut in it but not deep enough to end it. "That's pretty good for your first time," Alexios praised me.
Then we tried swords. While Alexios held it easily, the sword dragged me down with its weight and I barely did any harm to the dummies like usual. By the time we were done trying out as many weapons as possible, it was sunset. "Okay, by tomorrow I expect you to tell me a weapon you would like to work with," he claimed. Everything that I used was a disaster. I mean, I didn't expect me to wield them easily right off the bat but I never thought it would be this hard to find a weapon for me. There was only one that I felt most comfortable with. I decided that would be my weapon of choice.
"I've already figured it out," I said. Alexios showed a surprise face. "My weapon is the spear."
"The spear, eh? I think it fits you perfectly considering your strength."
That following night, I visited the twins in their own room. Entering their room, I noticed two maids looking after the twins and cleaning up the messy space. As soon as I entered, the maids bowed respectfully in my presence. "No need to be so formal. I'm just one of you guys," I smiled at them. They then nod and left the room before I could say anything else. Hopefully, that'll lessen the space between us.
Walking to the cribs where the twins slept, I planted a small kiss each on their forehead whispering goodnight to them. Heavy eyelids soon covered my eyes and my body slowly overcame with tiredness. Soon, I fell asleep on the floor by their cribs.
The next morning, my blistered hands were wrapped in cloth easing the pain I never noticed until now. I was with Alexios training along with others after eating breakfast. "Before you can even touch the spear, you gotta build up your body strength and muscles," he explained. "You're a bit behind everyone else but I'm sure you'll catch up in no time." I nod as a response and began to stretch along with the rest of the trainees.
Going to the race track after stretching, I began to ascend my speed on the track. Many others pasted by me within seconds of starting but that just motivated me even more. Even though I was like this, I'm pretty competitive by nature.
Working out the next few hours were tiring as we were doing it nonstop (except for break-time and lunch). Push-ups: thirty minutes. Planks: one hour. Squats: a hundred. It was endless. Yup, I died doing each of them.
By the time, the sun was setting, I was sweating all over...and breathing heavily for air "Good job today, Aries. Make sure to get proper rest for tomorrow," Alexios said.
"I will," I replied drying off my sweat of a towel.
Heading to the servants' break room after half an hour of break, I asked, "Is there anything I can help with?"
They all bowed in surprise by my appearance. "Th-there's no need for you to go out of your way to help us servants," said an elderly male. Dressed in the servant's clothing, they all look at me like I had grown a third eye on my face. How do I make them stop with all these bowing?
"Please, no need to be so formal. I just want to help in any way that I can. Besides, it'll be my pleasure to meet all of you, whom I'll be working with!" I smiled at them, trying to ease the tension in the kitchen.
After confirming with each other, the elderly male finally said, "Then, if you could, would you please preserve the food inside the jars and tub?"
Glancing around the place, I found large jars I assume are the ones he was talking about. Carefully, I put the leftover grains in the jars filled with oil. This way, if they were to be used again, the products would be fresh like they were before. Soon after witnessing me at work, the other servants resumed their jobs and the atmosphere was peaceful once again. After that, we cleaned the entire kitchen and places around the mansion making them sparkly clean. By the time we were done, it was already dark outside with the glowing moon. No stars. "It's late, you should all rest now," I told them.
"Thank you for your help," they all replied bowing. I guess they still can't get used to me yet.
Days passed as I trained with Alexios, gaining the strength and muscles that aided my powers. Helping the servants around, they soon got comfortable with my presence and barely bowed to me anymore. Each of them respected me and I respect them in return. By the time I knew it, I was already 15 years old and the twins are 10 years old. "Morning Aries!" Helle yelled brightly as she barged into my room.
"Helle...don't barge into a man's room like that," I said half naked with my bare chest out in the open displaying the muscles I've grown over the years. With my eyelids half open, I saw her black hair that was wavy like her mother's and her silver eyes that hold the lineage of a cloud nymph. Dressed in a fancy white chiton with a gold belt, she was just like her mother.
"It's fine, you were doing nothing anyway." Shaking my head, I got off the bed and went to my tub of clothing and quickly put one on as Helle bounced around my bed.
"Helle, you shouldn't barge into Aries's room like that," Phrixus said as he came running in. He also had black hair and eyes like Helle. Their black hair came from their father but none of them had his gray eyes. Phrixus dressed in a light blue shirt toga with a transparent cloth draping over one of his shoulders. Helle, even though a girl, she's stronger than Phrixus and had always been a tomboy since she was able to walk. Phrixus, on the other hand, was strong in his own way but is more mature compared to Helle. If I were to describe them, Helle would be the male and Phrixus would be the female in the family...if I could say that. "Sorry about that, Aries."
"No worries, I'm glad to see Helle so energetic in the morning," I reply. By now, I was used to her endless energy that scared a lot of other boys their age away.
"Anyway, Aries, you promised me you would show me your other form today!" Helle acclaimed with glittering eyes.
I put on a worrying smile. "Okay, but promise me you will tell no one."
She nodded quickly making Phrixus nervous.
We then traveled outside to a hill where the many buildings and lands were below the mansion. With glittering eyes in both of them, I smiled looking at the beautiful country below us. Closing y eyes and sucking in a breath, I wrapped the air around my body shifting my bones and muscles. My human body was now a golden ram. I was bigger than any normal ram and was taller than the twins. "Wow, when did you learn you could do this?" Phrixus ask.
"When I was your age, I felt a strange power inside of me in the middle of the night. By the time I got up, my body shifted into a ram and broke the bed in half. I soon later found out that it was due to my powers growing, along with my body," I answered with a change in my voice. Whenever I'm in this form, my body feels freer and my voice changes due to the shift in my body.
"How long can you stay in that form?" Helle then questioned.
"For as long as I want."
"Cool!" I then shifted back to human form. "Wait, how did you get your clothing back?"
"I'm not sure, I think the clothing disappear as I shift into a ram." I also don't wanna know how.
Helle gasped. "Even cooler!"
"Now, we must get back before your lessons start."
"Thank you for showing us your ram, Aries," Phrixus smiled to me. I smiled back petting their head "No problem."
After heading back to the mansion, ruckus was all around as a servant girl ran up and said, "I'm here to inform you that there's a visitor today."
"Who?" I asked.
"Ino, the daughter of Cadmus and Harmonia." I have a bad feeling about this.
