Champlin’s leg is twitching uncontrollably as she continues trying to make contact with Bethany. She’s still recording everything we hear. She periodically flips between the incident screen, unit assignments, and the map tracking unit locations. I know what she’s looking for. She's tracking their movements, silently pleading for them to get there faster.
The unsettling feeling lodged inside me grows, but I can’t figure out why. It wasn’t until I saw Champlain type out the next comment entry that it I realize why.
“CT NO LONGER HEARS CALLER IN BG” (CallTaker)
Two more shots are fired in quick succession. The call is suddenly disconnected.Champlain leans over to redial Bethany’s number in hopes of someone picking up. It goes straight to voicemail. There’s a second attempt.
A third.
No answer.
During all of this, she doesn’t stop typing. As she types in her final note, the first officer is checking on scene.
I don’t think Chaplain sees the notification because the next call is automatically answered.
