The meeting took place in the resturaunt. A very, very, classy one. Initially I had expected it to be in some typical long tabled meeting room, and I also thought that the lawyer would be some young person who is given the easy cases for starting off. Rodney's business has been successful, yes. And he has been bringing in a steady profit with 5 stores. On top of that, he is loosing money. Yet, didn't he just comment on my charge? How the hell did he afford the CEO of the Law Firm, Charles Dawson?
The man is sitting in front of us with his eyes set firmly on mine. He does not seem to be impressed that I am here alongside Rodney. As I stare back, I subtly take in his appearance. I would guess that he is in his late 30s, given his young face but salt and pepper hair starting to come through. A well tailored blue suit clinging to his body. He's a handsome man, I'll give him that.
After a few moments of us all in silence, he finally drags his eyes off of mine to look at Rodney. His expression softens immediately and a slight fondness takes over.
"It's good to see you again, Mr. Roads, but I wish it were under better circumstances. What mess have you gotten yourself into? Don't answer that." He raises his hand to silence Rodney when he opens his mouth to speak, and surprisingly he does without question. Weird. "My assistant should be here shortly, the boy is a walking mess so I'm not surprised that he is late. Not sure why I've kept him around. Anyway, ah yes, Ms. Raymond!"
He raises from his seat to greet the new arrival who was being guided to our table. She is an average sized woman, with curly brown hair pulled back in a ponytail. She's a bit of a plain Jane keeping herself hidden behind the large black glasses. Rodney and I both stand to greet her, and once we are all seated again, Charles continues talking. "Glad you could join us, though I do hope your accounting skills suck and you made a huge mistake causing me to waste my valuable time."
This man... Rodney gives him a small smile watching him in slight awe. What the hell is going on? The woman, who's name I've forgotten, stands her ground, head raised and meeting Charles' eyes. "There was no mistake made in my work. Frankly I don't know how the previous accountant missed it. What I found was not hidden, and could be spotted easily to a trained eye." She stares with confidence.
"Where is the previous accountant now?" I ask when the two continue to have a stare down.
Charles' head snaps to face me and he does not look too impressed. "Who even are you? And a better question, why are you here with Mr. Roads?" He asks, trying to sound annoyed but I can hear the jealousy in his voice. Does my Spice even know that the big cocky CEO has the hots for him? I don't know if he is lucky or if I should putty him, given the mans attitude. Talk about keeping it professional.
Just to test the waters, a wrap my arm around Rodney's shoulder and pull him into me. "Jameson O'Hare, a great and close... friend... to my little Spice here, we go way, way back." I make sure to put emphases on the word friend, and it looks like it worked. And just to get my lying point across, I give the top of Rodney's head a playful kiss.
The looks I receive are quite the mix. Rodney doesn't back away but looks up at me confused, probably wondering why I'm not being cold and blunt. I may act affectionate in private but never in public. Charles looks as if he is trying to cut my arm off with his eyes as he stares at the offending body part. The woman, Ms Raymond? I think she is internally squealing while having a fan-girl moment.
The main expression that catches me off guard though, is the man that is stood frozen mid step behind Mr. CEO. He looks broken and conflicted. Distraught. He looks how I did this morning. Disappointed.
"Mr. Dawson, Sir, I apologize for being late. Traffic was heavier than I expected. Here are the files you asked for." He stares as he sits down along side him.
I can't pull eyes away from him as he avoids mine, simply staring at the table.
This is going to be awkward.
