Shattering Shadows

Chapter 08 - Part 01

Chapter 08 - Part 01

Mar 11, 2019

For the next week I was locked up in my apartment going over all of the documents and forms that Tracey had sent over. There was more going on within Rodney's account than I had previously imagined.

I know he can be a bit dramatic at times so I expected a few pennies out of the till, or maybe snagging a top or two from the shop. Never did I expect what I found.

Maybe I should have listened in on that meeting with his accountant and lawyer... Oh well.

It seems as though whoever was stealing from him, did start with what I had initially thought. It was only small change and notes being taken from the register. This way of steeling nearly always goes unnoticed because the money is taken out before it is recorded in the books, but over time and with a lot if digging, it can be easily found and traced back.

Rodney did mention that Jane had caught and fired the guy responsible. Yet, when I found him and questioned him myself during the week, he claimed that he only took required change when he was short for his lunch and that he always returned it. If Rodney knew his, I highly doubt he would have fired him. But even so, that was a year ago. These records date back to when he first opened.

On top of the constant small portions of money leaving the shop in that method, I also found something that I have never seen before, at least not personally. Rodney has 25 employees in total between all five of his shops. Yet, there were 35 employee names registered on the pay roll, but no persons to stand for the names. An extra two payrolls added per shop within the first 6 months of opening. And when a new employee would be added to the system, another earned a small raise. These changes should have been obvious to Rodney, and it would have been, if it was he who handled the payroll and hiring.

I have a few theories worked out in my head when the next weekend arrives, and all that's left to do is to go through it with Rodney himself, and put it together as evidence.

Files in hand, I make my way towards Rodney's apartment which is upstairs above his shop. Throughout the week I heard little to nothing from my two friends besides casual checkins. Ignacio informed me that he found out nothing more on the matter when he caught up with Rodney but there was something definitely going on. How he reacted last night after his short phone call with his girlfriend worried us both, but we can't go making assumptions on the matter either. I did that once with regards to Jane, but Rodney did not take it too kindly. He hates any sort of conflict and believes no one has a bad bone in their body, especially not his beloved Jane.

Ignacio and myself will be there for him when he needs us but there isn't much else we can do until then. I know that if it was myself, Rodney would force me into a cuddle session like last night until I was ready to spill the beans. Cuddles and comfort are my kryptonite. Rodney? Surprisingly, we've yet to find it. In the past we've tried but the only way to help him is to wait for him to come to us. Frustrating to say the least.

Finally arriving outside the shop, I enter the lone door along side it that brings you upstairs to the Rodney's home. There used to be eight apartments, two on each level, but he ended up buying the top two floors when he made enough income and renovated them into his own mini penthouse apartment.

As I leave myself in to his home with my spare key, I can hear faint voices down the hallway. Or should I say voice. Jane, once again, is shouting at who I presume to be Rodney but it's too muffled for me to make it out. I know she can have her moments of being a bitch, especially when I'm around, but I never heard her actually raise her voice and get angry at Rodney. This to me was completely new.

I walk further away from the shouting, hoping it's nothing more than a lovers quarrel, and sit myself down in the spacious living room. The style of the apartment would make you believe that it is a show house, not one that is the home to Rodney. Once again, Janes doing.

Time ticks by as I'm still waiting there so I send a quick text to Rodney just so he knows I've arrived, not wanting to be anywhere near the she-devil. Unfortunately, luck wasn't in my favor. Not even a minute later, I hear feet stomping their way towards my direction. A blond haired woman dressed in a tight red dress appears while holding an unlocked phone in her hand.

"You." She spits in my direction, visibly shaking with anger. "How the hell did you get in here, huh? Didn't get enough of my fiancé last night?" She questions while making a show of the ring on her finger. I internally smirk at half of what she says. This isn't the first time she has got jealous about Rodney spending time with me, always thinking I'm secretly trying to steal him away. Maybe he needs to tell her what he tells us, 'I'm straight'.

Ever since they presumed my sexuality to be gay when I was first with Ignacio, she has accused me of it any chance she gets. So the fact that she thinks I'll be jealous about her engagement amuses me. So just for good measure, I hold up the keys to their apartment in my hand and swing them around my finger.

An awkward and shy looking Rodney appears around the corner but doesn't step any closer, just watches.

"Why do you have those? This is MY home and you certainly don't have my permission to have keys." This is where Rodney normally buts in and defuses the situation, but he doesn't budge. He grips onto the bottom of his T-shirt tightly as though he is holding himself back. "Well? Huh? Dick got your tongue?"

Instead of fighting back and responding with a snarky comment to rile her up more about it being Rodney's that had it last night, I'm too concerned about my friends silence. Rising from my seat, I start making my way passed the red dressed devil and towards my friend. Before I can take a step further towards him though, a well manicured hand latches onto my arm. Out of reflex, my own hand catches her wrist into a tight grip.

"You may be Rodney's fiancé, which I doubt is by choice, and a friend of mine once upon a time, but don't you dare touch me again." I say coldly and only loud enough for her to hear. One thing I am glad about, is that Jane was always someone I never let myself open up around. So, even though it may be an empty threat, to an extent anyway as I'd probably get Summer to do the work for me, it isn't to Jane. My threat sounds more than promising.

Her manicured hand leaves my arm instantly but the glare I receive remains. I ignore it as I finally bypass her. Rodney is looking between us slightly confused but still remains oddly quiet. My expression softens once I'm in front of him, and with not wanting to be in Janes presence any longer, I take ahold of his hand and leave the apartment.

Before we can reach the bottom floor to exit the building, Rodney stops the elevator on the first floor. He looks at me shyly and smiles as he drags me out and towards one of the apartment rooms.

"I managed to buy this place last month, well, sort of. The owner was an elderly lady who I grew very close to while living here. She was like a motherly figure to me but died last month and in her will, she left half of it to me knowing that is was my goal to own the entire building. The other half went to her son. He's out of the country though so we've yet to meet and discuss things." He explains as he lets us in through the door. The inside is beyond colorful and full of different little quirky ornaments. I'm in awe as I look around taking it all in. Now this is Rodney's style through and through.

"Why did she leave half to you though, you would imagine it would all go to her son?" I ask as we make our way into the dining room.

"I'm not sure. From what I know of, her son received a letter that would explain. I was only made aware of what she left me and I was completely taken aback when I did. Jane doesn't know about here, also. I've come here here a lot throughout the past month." He trails off as he takes a seat at the table.

"Speaking about Jane..."

"Don't. Please." He begs, looking up at me. I bite my tongue when I see his eyes pleading not to go there. Instead, I approach him from behind and hug him over the chair.

"When your ready, I'm here. Always will be, Spice." I say, giving the back of his head a kiss. "Onto other things, here. This is what I've scooped up so far. Not all the evidence is there but it's enough, the pieces just need to be put together by you-" I'm cut off before I can finish after throwing the files on top of the table in front of Rodney. He jumps a little as a loud bang on the door runs through the apartment.

"Dammit. Oh shoot, I forgot. Is it that time already?" Rodney says as he jumps out of the chair and paces around a little. "Ok, ok, relax, Rodney. I am Rodney Roads, and I am going to relax. Yep, relaxed." He rushes over towards a mirror hanging on the wall and fixes himself slightly and gives himself a bright smile. All previous awkward and shyness gone. He turns back towards my direction to head for the door when another knock is heard. When he does, I stare at him complete confuse. "Oh buggers! I really forgot! I'm sorry, Sugar, don't hate me, keep loving me, I love you!" He rushes out with wide eyes and runs towards the front door.

Ok then. I had thought it was Jane with how obnoxiously loud and demanding the knock was, but given his whole change in posture and attitude, I'm questioning who else it may be.

I remain frozen where I am for a few moments before I take a seat at the table. Muffled voices run through the apartment, and it's definitely not one that belongs to Jane. This voice is deep and masculine. Another voice can be heard also, much softer but too quiet for my ears to recognize. They all seem to be conversing out on the landing so to pass time and occupy myself, I make my way into the kitchen and start preparing a cup of tea for myself.

When I make my way back into the dining room, I force myself to hold onto the cup tighter so I don't drop it when I see who is sat at the table.

Throughout the week I had kept myself busy with work, and eventually got so hooked on it that thoughts of Revon took a back seat. Even though I knew I would eventually seek him out and try to reconnect after our meeting last week, I needed to get myself back into normality. The pull I had felt to him happened so quickly that it threw me off and confused me, so swamping myself in the work for Rodney helped. I thought I would be prepared to control myself when I next met him.

Guess who thought wrong?
