Magic's End

Chapter 7: Departure

Chapter 7: Departure

Feb 27, 2019

As Rusty and Webs walked through the gate, Rusty could see two horse-drawn wagons. The farther but bigger of the two seemed to just consist of a long bench on either side of it while the smaller wagon, which was closer to the gate was almost filled to the brim with supplies, a white wagon hood on top to cover the supplies in case of weather. The bigger of the wagons was tied to two horses, one brown and one black which was littered with white spots, the smaller wagons though was instead tied to a donkey.

As Rusty and Webs passed through the gate Rusty noticed that unlike when they first entered that morning, there was now a guard stationed on either side of the gate wearing the metal armor that they wore when Rusty had first arrived.

Rusty, who had stopped paying attention while looking at the guards, looked up to see Webs at the reins of the smaller wagon motioning for Rusty to come over. As Rusty approached the wagon he could see that there was clearly only enough room for one person to sit at the reigns on the wagon.

“Alright Forge, only one person gets to sit with the supplies in the back here,” Webs said, pointing behind him under the wagons canopy, “And it as to be you.”

“Why’s that?” questioned Rusty.

“Cause the captain always steers the other wagon so it can't be her and the benches suck anyways so I’m sitting here.”

‘Yeah okay, but why me and not like...uh, anyone else?”

“That’s because Taste’s far too childish and innocent to keep me in a good mood, Cloud complains too much about how I do things, even though they work just fine," Web's said, muttering the last part under his breath, "Donors not here, Port is always stuck up or writing poetry, thinking he's too good to talk to me or something. Boomer never knows when to shut up," Webs stopped for a moment to mock Boomer, who based off the mocking was very simple-minded and liked explosions, "Pause I don’t want here for...uh….personal reasons, and you seem chill enough to not be too bore or distract me while I’m steering.”

Rusty shrugged, ”Whatever, why not?" he replied as he got up onto the seat Webs was on then climbed into the back where the supplies were and made himself comfortable. As he sat down behind Webs he found that the wagon was almost packed to the brim, giving him barely any room to stretch his legs as he sat at the front of the front of the supplies.

After a couple minutes of sitting in silence, Rusty asked Webs what the significance of the town they were heading to was, but when Rusty nudged Webs he found that Webs had fallen asleep, which now that Rusty thought about it, Webs wasn't there when he'd decided to sleep on the side of the road the night before, which meant he'd come along later in the night so its no wonder he was tired. After the nudge Webs began to tip over and before Rusty knew it, Webs had fallen off the wagon and was sprawled out on the ground in a panic at the sudden awakening. As Webs was getting back on his seat at the reins Rusty noticed that the captain was standing at the gate next to a skinny looking man wearing the same crimson red armor as Rusty and had his hair in a long black ponytail that reached the middle of his back.

“Chi you really need to start thinking of better names,” said the man to the captain.

“What do you mean Lawrence? The names I came up with are great! Webs even said so when I ran them by him last night!”

“Chi, no disrespect, but you came up with, and I quote, “long hair”, first of all, I have double his hair length, and you wanted to call him long HAIR?! That is not only stupid but inaccurate when compared to the other members of the group.”

“I’ll have you know that all the names that I thought of were great names!” The captain said to the man, finishing their argument. “Umm...Lawrence? Where’s the carriages?” the captain asked, motioning towards the wagons.

Lawrence put his face into his hand and let out a sigh, “I’ve told you this on every mission we’ve been sent on, I told you last night when you were thinking of names, and I told you this morning, carriages are high class and we’re a relatively newly formed squad, the general isn’t going to commission us carriages anytime soon so for the foreseeable future wagons are what we should expect.” Lawrence stated in an annoyed tone.

After Lawrence finished talking, the captain noticed Webs and Rusty sitting on the smaller wagon and began to walk over with Lawrence following in tow, “Webs! Go sit in the other wagon, if I let you steer then you’ll just fall asleep,” the captain turned to look at Lawrence while Webs started climbing down, cursing the whole way, “Do you wanna steer this one or do you wanna let Boomer do it?”

After thinking for a moment Lawrence then replied with a joking smile, “I think I’d prefer to write some poetry on the way there, and besides, Boomer’s excitement will make him more awake than me, and he’s better at dealing with the newcomers anyways,” Lawrence said, pointing to Rusty who was still sitting in the wagon.

“Alright! I’ll tell him when he gets out here, he’s probably just filling up some more bottles for the mission,” the captain stated before skipping her way over to the bigger wagon with Lawrence slowly walking behind her. Meanwhile, already at the bigger wagon, Rusty wasn't surprised to see Webs climbing in the back of the wagon with a disappointed look on his face, but was also surprised to see a woman who looked to be in her thirties already sitting in the wagon reading a book, the woman had dark purple hair and was wearing the same type of crimson armor Rusty and Lawrence were wearing.

As Rusty turned to his front he saw that there was now no one there and nothing to keep him occupied, and so he opted to try and take a nap.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

After several minutes of sitting in boredom, Rusty saw Cloud walk through the gate and head towards the bigger wagon and climbed in the back, soon after him came out a man in either his thirties or forties if Rusty who had bushy brown hair and a thick but short beard who was wearing their squad's crimson armor along with what appeared to be blacksmith goggles on his head, holding a fairly large crimson red bottle in each hand. The man appeared to be talking to a clone of himself but without the goggles or any bottle, Rusty just assumed the clone was Taste who had changed into their squad's armor out of the more civilian clothes he'd been in earlier that looked so plain that Rusty couldn't even remember what they looked like. After the two of them reached the bigger wagon, the captain yelled at the man holding the bottles while the one Rusty assumed was Taste climbed in the back of the bigger wagon. As taste began folding up some steps into the wagon that Rusty didn’t know were until then, the man with the bottles started walking towards the smaller wagon where Rusty was.

“Hey!” Exclaimed the man as he approached, “How's it going Forge? You know, that’s a cool name, wish I could've had one that cool, but you know, all I do is make things go boom, so...you know. Oh, but hey I’m gonna be at the reins for this wagon so this will be fun don’t you think? Can you put these somewhere up there for me?” the man said to Rusty as he handed Rusty the bottles and climbed into the steering seat. While Rusty put the bottles on the opposite side of his little section the man continued to talk, “I’m Boomer by the way if you didn’t already know, I'd tell you my real name but I'm sure you already read it in the notes.”

At the moment the captain yelled something at Boomer that Rusty didn’t quite hear and Boomer yelled “Yeehaw!” and brought the reins up then down, whipping the donkey with it and causing the pulling of their wagon to begin.

“I know it seems like there’s a large number of supplies in here, but this is mostly just the lightest stuff while the heavier things are under the benches in the other wagon, don’t want to overburden this poor animal here,” he said motioning towards the donkey pulling their wagon, “Oh that’s reminds me of my dog, his name is-”

Rusty had begun to tone Boomer out, if it had been anyone else then Rusty would have kept listening assuming that they would stop talking soon, but Rusty decided to have faith in Webs when he said that Boomer didn’t know when to stop talking. Rusty then opted that it was in his best interest to take a nap and although it took him over twenty minutes, eventually Rusty fell asleep.
