The Myth

Mar 01, 2019

The corridor seems to be endless, and people keep showing up at random, sometimes stopping Will to ask or tell him something, always shooting me wary glances. I read the names on the doors as we go by, finding them quite odd, but my kidnapper doesn't bother to answer my questions.

Finally, we enter what seems to be a corner office, on the second floor, that has an amazing view to the cliff and the dark sky outside. It's nice, well decorated, despite being simple; a wooden desk facing black leather armchairs, a computer, a note board, a tall plant on the corner, a coffee machine and a black carpet that contrasts with the white floor. Simple, modern and clean. There's even a violin on the corner.

"Sit down, please." Will asks from behind the desk, and I sit on one of the leather armchairs. It's comfortable. I can read his name on a small silver plaque and wonder if he's a big figure in this crime institution. "What do you want to know?"

" What do I want to know?" I snap, then notice that he's serious. "We can start off with you telling me where the hell we are."

"The Source."

I stare at him.

"That's helpful, thanks."

"The Source is where we store data of every one who needs protection, and also where we train, meet to discuss important matters and basically keep the world spinning."

"Okay, Will." I narrow my eyes at him. "You better tell me right now what's going on, and who are you."

"I'm trying. But I haven't been prepared to do this."

"Call someone who has, then."

"That's the problem. No one has been prepared to this, because we thought this day would never come."

"Well, that's not my fault, is it?" I glance at the clock on the wall by my left. It's half past one. My parents are ought to kill me when I get home. "Hurry up."

"Alright. Before I tell you anything, I'll just warn you that this may not make a lot of sense right now, but I need you to open your mind." Will says, staring directly into my eyes. "At first, there was chaos, and chaos created light. Together, they created the Gods and Goddesses, and from them, all fantastic creatures. Creatures that most of your people can't see when disguised, but are used in your religions, literature, and films. Fairy tales for children to sleep. Legends and myths that are forgotten after a certain age. They are all real, and go generically by Myths. It's like an inside banter."

I stare at him, in silence for a second, then I burst out in laughter.

"Are you high?"

Will looks at me as if I've just said something outrageous.

"Of course not."

"Am I high?"

"No. May I continue?"

"Sure, mate. Go ahead."

"So, the merging of chaos and Light created two opposite sides: Light, that continued to represent goodness and reason, and the Shadows, that stands for devilishness. They complete each other; all Light carries some Shadow as well as all Shadows carry some Light." Will has a peculiar manner of speaking, articulated, an old timber that makes him sound posh and well, old. "At some point, it's been decided that the two should be completely divided, and each would have a Ruler, like a queen or king that concentrates the most power, and has the duty to look over the people of their side."

I sigh, getting up.

"Where are you going?"

"Home. It's past curfew."

"Sit down. You'll die if you leave."

"Only if you kill me."

"Violet, please, sit down. Let me finish the story. You can't get very far anyways."

The fact that he's correct is frustrating. In the middle of nowhere, without a car or a mobile, I'm pretty doomed. Might as well die in this warm room.

"Wrap it up."

"Thanks. Okay, so, every time a new heir assumes the throne, the side gets stronger. That's why it's wise to change Rulers often. The former Ruler of Light's first son, the one ought to assume, came out to be less like what's expected a heir to be. He found it more appealing to party with humans then to bother with bureaucracy, and in one of those parties, he met a lovely lady, whom with he soon fell in love. They decided to get married, with the blessing of the Ruler. Within a few months, he became the new Ruler, and the girl was his queen. The claims for a heir were quick, and the response, even quicker. Within a year, the young lady was with a child, and the people was pleased. The only problem was that the girl was human, a mere mortal, whose body was unable to bear with the pregnancy.

"Did she die?" I ask. Will's story is interesting, specially in that velvet voice and plummy accent. He's probably southern.

"No. The Ruler of Light loved her too much to let her die, so, in his despair, he took drastic measures and decided to seek help in the Shadows, with the Ruler himself. They made a deal; the girl would become immortal, but the child she was carrying would be given to the Shadows. If it was a girl, she would marry the recently born heir, Thomas, and with that transfer some of the Light power to the Shadows. If it was a boy, he would be killed. So, for the next few months, all the people hoped for a boy, but a little girl was born instead."

" And they have her away?"

"Yes, but not to the Shadows." Will pauses, then jolts his eyes to me. "They secretly sent her to live with a foster family that they trusted, and officially announced that she was born dead."

I hold his silver gaze until it becomes uncomfortable. The noise of the clock is annoying me greatly.

"Are you saying I'm that girl?"

"You do know you're adopted, right?" He asks, and I nod. "The offspring of a Myth and a human is always born with violet eyes, exactly like yours."

"So I'm the princess?"

"Yes."

"That's ridiculous!" I blurt, almost laughing. "This whole story is interesting, but so made up! Come on. Like, how would you know I'm alive? They declared her to be dead!"

"Yes, but they wouldn't send their daughter unprotected. That's where we come in. We protect the children with the Vision."

"Vision? And who's we?"

"The people with violet eyes are called Visions, because they can see everything other humans can't." Will explains. "And we are the doppelgangers of the Sources, spread in branches around the world. We have weapons and knowledge of centuries, besides the abilities."

"You're a doppelganger?"

"Yes." He says, proudly.

Will is about to say something when the door suddenly bursts open, and a penetrating alarm sound fills the air. A brunette boy rushes in, a backpack on his shoulder that almost hits me in the face when he places his tanned hands on the desk. The look on Willem's face is a mixture of surprise, confusion and anger as he stares at the boy.

"They're here. We've got to go. " The stranger says, then looks at me. "Come on, doll. We don't want to see this pretty face hurt."

I don't react. Will, on the other hand, is quick to grab a big black backpack, swing it over his shoulder and pull me out of my chair. With some touches on a small screen in the desk, the glass wall slides open, creating an emergency exit.

"Don't worry, I'll catch you." Will murmurs. I don't have time to ask him to repeat before he jumps down, falling on his feet. "Come down."

There are a lot of things that I'm afraid of. Heights is one of them. And so is darkness. Jumping into the darkness from a considerable height is making me panic.

"No way. I can't!"

"Come on!"

Maybe this is part of the plan to get me killed. It's creative, at least. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. I'll die anyway.

Then I jump.

My body feels weightless for less than a second. It's like flying, and no film passes in my head. All I can think of is the pain that's coming.

But there is no pain. Just a little, actually, of a pair of arms wrapping around me. I put my feet on the ground, knees trembling, and hear when the other boy lands besides us.

And then we're running across the loan, not stopping until we are back into the Mercedes.
