Minho:
I woke up finding Eliza sleeping next to me curled up in a ball. Her head was resting on my arm and her arm was wrapped around it. I tried to pull away but it only caused her grib to strength. I tried again trying to slowly pull it out slowly but she started to stir opening her eyes and looking at me.
When she noticed me and her hands wrapped around my arm she quickly let go sitting up. Her face turned a bright red. I couldn’t help but looked at her and realize just how beautiful she was. Her bright emerald eyes complemented her long red hair. Her pale skin making her eyes pop out even more. She was the prettiest person I had ever seen, manly because she was the only girl I had ever seen.
“Are you okay?” I asked
“Y..ya I’m fine. Sorry about laying on you.”
“Don’t worry about it, I didn’t mind. How are you feeling this morning? If your leg okay?”
She looked away from Minho and down to her leg. Her pants were burnt at the bottom but still seemed to cover her leg a bit. She pulled up her pants and than unwrapped her bandage. It looked better from the previous day or at least a little bit. The blisters were almost gone and the skin wasn’t as broken and cracking. The main burn was still quite red and almost bloody looking but it was much better than the previous day. Her eyes were sulkin and I could see tears starting to form.
“Are you okay Eliza?” I asked wanting to comfort her but not really knowing how.
“I’m okay. It’s just a bit sore and I don’t know how it will feel to walk on it but i’m okay.”
“Eliza I have to go check with Newt and see if he found anything.” she looked a bit down when I said that, “Would you like to come with me?”
She looked up smiling at me, “I would love to.”
I stood up offering her a hand up which she took. I walked off from the bed as Eliza stood up testing her ankle. The first time she almost fell but I caught her helping her stand again. After a few tries she was able to walk a little. It was more of a limping then walking but at least she could move.
We began to head out Eliza walking next to me just in case she needed something. I made sure not to walk to fast wanting to be there with her to keep an eye on her. I didn’t want her to get hurt again. I really hoped that when I got to Newt he would say he found the person responsible because I hated whoever did that. I wanted them to pay for hurting her. She had only been here for a few weeks, trying to make the best out of it and get along with everyone, and he tried to kill her. I wanted him to pay and suffer for that. She didn’t deserve it.
“Minho!” I heard someone call from behind me. Both of us stopped moving turning around and looking at who said it. I saw Newt running over to us. He was panting by the time he got over to us.
“What happened Newt?”
“We found him. It was Kile.” I stood there shocked for a minute. Kile had been here for a while not as long as some us us but for a while. I never thought he would do something like this. “Alby is gathering everyone for the gathering. He wants both of you there.”
I looked back to Eliza seeing her face pale. When she noticed I was looking at her she gave me a quick smile, “What is a gathering?”
I explained what the gathering were as we all walked to the homestead for it. When we arrived almost everyone was already there filling in. I moved over to my seat with the other keepers. Eliza had a chair a next to Alby and Newt where as Kile sat in a chair on the main floor looking at Eliza sending daggers at her, I wanted to go and punch him for everything but I knew that I couldn’t.
Ably stood up silencing everyone before starting. “Kile you set a fire burning out food and our dining hall, along with nearly killing Chuck and Eliza. What do you have to say for yourself.”
“I started the fire in hopes that Eliza would come back and try to help. I am sorry that I burned your food but I have no regrets for almost killing Eliza. That was my goal. She doesn’t belong her, she is an outsider who is different! She isn't one of us and deserves to die!”
I was getting angry. Of course she deserved to be here, she is one of us now, “What do you mean she doesn’t deserve to be here? She is just like the rest of us.”
“No she’s not. She is different. She isn’t who she says she is!” he shouted. I was about to say something else when he started again, “She needs to die. I have nothing else to say you our people.” he said looking at Ably.
Ably stood up looking at the keepers, “What shall we do with him?”
Many of the keepers, including me, agreed that we should banish him. There were a few that said to just let him go with a warning and on night in the slammer but they weren’t enough of them to make that final. After a few more minutes of discussion we decided that he should be banished into the maze. I looked over at Eliza to see what she thought but all I was meat with was a pale and blank face. She was staring off at where Keli was not looking at him just where he was. It was like she was no longer there.
I went to walk over to her but Alby stopped me asking me to take Kile to the slammer and make sure he stays there until the banishment.
I couldn't really say no to him so I took Kile and lead him to the slammer. I asked him a few questions but was only met with silence. It started to get on my nerves and I already could tell that I didn’t really like him. We had never really got along but after all of this and what has happened him just being next to me irritated me. I wanted him to be gone. I didn’t want him here not after what he had done. He deserved to be banished and that was something I didn’t wish on anyone.
By the time that we made it to the slammer I was sick of him. I put him in and locked the door finding a comfy place to sit. I didn’t have anything to do so I just sat there staring up at the sky as I thought about what had happened in the past day. So much had happened and I didn’t know what to think of it all. There was so much.
“Hey Minho.” Chuck said startling me a little.
“Hey Chuck, what are you doing?”
“Newt wanted me to bring you some stuff to do while you watch him.” he said holding out some books for me. I grabbed them placing them next to me.
“Thank you Chuck,” he turned to walk away but I stopped him, “hey, Chuck do you know how Eliza is doing. I haven’t seen her since the gathering and she didn’t look like herself.”
Chucks face fell a little as I asked, “She went into the deadheads after the meeting I think and I haven’t seen her since. I was going to go find her though I will check on her for you.”
I smiled at him thanking him one last time before he left.
I watched him walk off till I could no longer see him, only then did I pull out one of the books. They weren’t the most interesting books but they did the trick.
The light in the sky finally started to dim and it was time for the banishing. I stood up putting the books on the ground and walked over to the cell and opened it pulling Kile out and to the door.
By the time we arrived everyone had already gathered at the walls. They were all ready to have another member of the glade banished. It’s not like there had been a lot of gladers who had got banished in the few years we had been here but there had been a few, maybe four or five of them. It was always hard for us to saw goodbye to one, even if they were a tratoir and put everyone in danger with what they did. They were still a part of the bigger family and it was difficult saying goodbye to them now.
This time was different though. They had tried to kill the newest glader. They had tried to kill the one girl in the maze. The girl who everyone had grown close to in the short amount of time she had been here. We were not okay with that and they would pay.
I sent Kile in the middle of everyone gathered. He tried to get out but we put the poles out making it so he couldn’t get out. Newt threw the bag into the maze as we pushed back one last time. He was now in the maze. The doors began shutting as we all watched the doors shut.
Once the doors had shut all the way one by one people began to leave. Newt headed to the wall to cross off yet another name and I walked over to Eliza to check on her. She had watched her first banishment and I could tells she wasn’t okay.
“How are you doing?” I asked as she looked up at me.
Everyone had left at this point leaving us the only two left. She walked over to me and wrapped her arms around me burying her face in my chest. I could tell that she had been trying hard to hold in tears but there was no use now, they all came flowing out along with the soft sobs hidden in my chest. I wrapped my arms around her trying to help calm her.
After a few minutes she calmed down and pulled away. Her eyes red and puffy and her cheeks wet from tears, “I’m sorry Minho I just don’t understand why this is all happening to me. I don’t understand what makes me so different.”
“Is there anything in your memories that you know of.”
She shook her head, “Nothing that would make me different I don’t think.”
“Okay I believe you.” I said grabbing hold of her wrist before walking off, “No let's get you back to the room for some rest.”
She limped behind me slowly. Her face would flinch every once in a while, probably from the pain in her ankle. I stopped letting her catch her breath and take a minute to relax.
“Did you go to the med-jacks?”
“Yes Jeff put some more ointment on and re-wrapped it.” she said looking up at me.
“Good. I’m sure he did better than I did with it.” she let out a little laugh as we continued walking. “Does it still hurt?”
“Yes. It’s not as bad as yesterday but it still stings really bad hurts to walk on.”
“Do you want me to carry you. I don’t mind.”
“No, no its fine. I can walk.” I stopped yet again not talking no for an answer. I could tell it hurt more than she was letting on. I picked her up and carried her as we walked. I could tell she felt better being off her foot but she was still really tense about me carrying her.
Once we got back to the room I dropped her off in the bed and sat down next to her. She laid down pulling the covers on top of herself.
“Minho, thank you for everything you had done for me.”
I smiled laying down in the bed as well, making sure there was still space in between us so that she didn’t feel embarrassed.
“Of course, I really don’t mind. Now get some rest so that you can heal faster.” she simply nodded before closing her eyes and falling asleep immediately. I found it funny how she could fall asleep so fast. There were only the few times that I was able to do that, most of the time I just stared at the dark ceiling.
Today wasn’t one of those nights, however. I closed my eyes and passed out.
