The wind was like a lullaby to those who seeked excitement. It’s force of unseen potential was intense on the greyed waters. I’d stare upon the sea every day and watch the waves. Today like many, was a coarse and rough one. The dark grey clouds loomed above us. Yet to me at least, It felt at ease. Someday, I’d brave those waters. I stood from my spot, the old large rock ingrained into the pale green grass. The grass of the hill blowed gently as the storm approached. My scarf flowed as i stood, It’s magnificent yellow hue greyed out by the over lurking shadows of above. My short blonde hair also flapped a tad as the wind continued it’s barrage against me. The dark faded blue toque upon my head did indeed protect what short hair wasn’t showing. My faded yellow button up coat blowed In the wind two, on my thin body. I smiled as I rose a fist, determined to make my escape from this island today. My wet brown boots and jeans thunked wet and loud as i turned.
“They’ll be coming from the shores!” A familiar voice shouted. I smiled as I turned. A little girl smiled at me. She was plump and big, but most would simply it’s believe It was from her large bright yellow raincoat. Her short brown hair rested over her freckled little face and brown eyes. She wore bright red rubber boots. She wore a necklace around her neck with a heart locket. She smiled as she hopped over to me. She had a hair clip, a pink one in her hair.
“Yup, I suppose we should head over there.” I replied with a large grin. She skipped to me and thudded onto a puddle. The puddle was displaced beyond repair. I nudged her and walked to where she had came. She trudged behind me energetically.
“Casey...Casey Lyn?” She asked me. I turned to her as we walked through the puddles scattered through the wet grassy plains, the wind blowing harder.
“Yes, Eli?” I asked. She seemed to grow nervous as she caught up.
“Well...Uh...I don’t wanna go.” She said. I laughed a little.
“Come on Eli, of course we’re going.” I replied She gulped and kept walking.
“But all our friends are here!” Eli replied. I stopped and sighed as the wind covered our bodies.
“Eli, you want to find a family to adopt you, correct?” I asked sweetly. She nodded very quickly. I smiled and walked forward, quickly she followed too.
“Well, as I’ve told you like, a gazillion times, this island has no parents who want to adopt you, i don’t get why this island even has an orphanage in the first place, If we leave this island, we can find you an actual family.” I replied to her. Eli nodded.
“I know...it’s just, all our friends are here.” Eli replied. I sighed and kept walking.
“Well, I don’t have any friends here, and those you consider friends, may be only nice to you because your an orphan.” I replied admittingly a bit harsh.
We waltzed Into town. It was, immensely small. There was twenty-thirty buildings tops. We walked past the old school and headed down to the docks. The waves crashed as I smelt the ocean breeze. I smiled widely.
“So, the plan is...uh..” Eli remarked. I turned and walked backwards.
“The plan Is to convince the sailors, who are stopping here due to the storm to let us hitch a ride.” I replied. Eli nodded.
“Shouldn’t we grab our stuff to take with us?” Eli asked.
“That’d be a big no. Too much luggage and we’d annoy the sailors, your lucky I’m even letting you take the clothes on your back.” I replied. She blushed a bit and nodded.
“I guess I am.” She replied. We headed down to the docks and hid behind a curved tree. The waves were crashing even harder now. It began to drizzle. Soon boats of all sizes began to come from the ocean abyss. They boarded to the large docks. Two small fisher boat and one ferry docked. I frowned.
“Hmm, we could have gotten a better selection but this’ll do.” I replied. Eli looked to me nervous.
“Which...which one Casey Lyn?” She asked. I began to scan the boats when suddenly the ferry door opened. A captain In tattered rags helped carry out luggage. Two adults and a child around my age got onto the dock.
“Casey?” Eli asked. I shushed her.
“Woah, woah, are those...those people have luggage, no...someone’s moving here, who’s dumb enough to move here of all places!” I asked loudly. Eli peered over my shoulder as she pressed up against my back.
“What!? Cool!” Eli yelled. I began to panic.
“No! Not cool! If there’s new people coming to live here, and that’s them, then the whole island will be here to greet them!” I yelled. Surely enough a group of townspeople we're heading down to the dock to meet the fresh meat. Eli looked at me confused.
“What’s wrong with that?” She asked. I turned around and faced her.
“It means we’ll never make It on that boat, without being seen!” I yelled.
“Trying to stow away again, Casey Lyn?” A voice came from behind the tree. I groaned.
Maribelle appeared from behind the tree. She wore a light blue jacket and jeans with a pink toque over her long black hair. Her brown eyes looked like chocolate above her button nose, and her cheeks were rosey red. I glared at the adult and sighed. Eli gasped and hid behind me.
“You have no proof.” I remarked. She rose up a tape recorder and pressed play.
“It means we’ll never make It on that boat, without being seen!” It mimicked. I glared heavily and grumpily crossed my arms.
“Well, you coulda hacked the tape recorder to say that.” I replied. Eli poked my lower back.
“Uh, I don’t think hacking works on tape recorders.” Eli replied. I began to steam a bit.
“You’re not helping Eli!” I yelled. She squealed and hid her head from view again. Maribelle sighed and put her hand on my shoulder.
“I know you’re more than ready to leave this island, but I can’t let you. Not until you’re legally adopted or you’re eighteen. Whichever of the two comes first, really.” Maribelle sighed sweetly. I huffed and glared.
“Please, we know which one will come first.” I muttered as i headed back into town.
“Sorry sister Maribelle!” Eli yelled as Eli skipped toward me.
I stomped away as the rain began to pour. Eli flipped up her raincoat hood as we marched.
“What does the tally board say now?” I asked annoyed. Eli lifted a clipboard from her coat and stroked a tick off on the wet and crumpled paper.
“That’s attempt failure 127.” Eli said calmly.
“128 will be our lucky number.” I remarked as we headed to a old wooden building. The orphanage, our home. We entered. Eli slowly and politely removed her boots. She took off the raincoat, revealing her huge frame for such a little girl. She put the thin rain coat on the rack and watched as I marched In not removing my soaked boots.
“I think I’m growing out of that rain coat.” she said trying to start a conversation. I walked down the old dusty hall.
“Not now.” I sighed sulking. I slammed the door and laid on my bed. The sheets worn out from how long I've been here. I stared up at the ceiling and sighed. I felt the scarf In my hands as I looked at the barren walls. I had a closet filled with may clothes, but most I had outgrown, plus why bother, I already had the perfect clothes.
I sat up and sighed again. The window behind me had water pouring down it. I looked out and smiled a bit. For some reason, I’ve been drawn to the rain. I looked to a poster on my wall. Adventure awaits, it read. I scoffed at it, knowing I’d be here forever. I heard a knock on the door.
“Casey Lyn?” Eli asked from it.
“No.” I replied. There was a moment of silence.
“I made you hot chocolate.” Eli said through the door. I swiftly opened the door. She smiled and carefully handed me the drink. I sighed and smiled.
“Thanks.” I replied coyly. She smiled. She walked In and sat on the bed as I carefully sipped from the small fragile cup. The door closed. I leaned against the door, burning my mouth a bit. Eli laid out on my bed as thunder echoed across the sky.
“Hey.” I called out. Eli turned to me.
“You know why I stare at the ocean on that cliff every day?” I asked. Eli cuddled with my pillow.
“No, I don’t.” She replied. I smirked.
“The ocean, It’s wide, vibrant and free, There’s something profound about it. Every crash of a wave Is the ocean begging me to join It, this island Is a cage, we’re birds, and the ocean is the sky.” I explained. Eli stood up.
“I get ya...but at least the cage feeds for us, and nurtures us, we’ve never been on our own before.” Eli replied.
“We’ve been on our own since our parents decided they didn’t want us any more and dropped us off here.” I replied. Eli stood a bit saddened. I sighed.
“Hey, Eli, You wanna see what i’m saying?” I asked. She looked at me and smiled.
“O-okay.” She replied. We turned and left the orphanage soon after and entered outside. The storm was briefly calm now, but still drizzling. There would be more hell later.
We left the outskirts of town with the wind blowing In our faces. We walked toward my rock, my favorite spot on this whole stupid island.
“The view is amazing Eli, even on a rainy and misty day like this.” I replied. Eli nodded. As we approached I stopped dead in my tracks. My spot was taken by a stranger. I gripped Eli’s arm.
“Who’s that!?” Eli gasped. There, In MY spot was a male around my age. He had dark skin, curly brown hair, brown eyes and a frown. He wore a grey toque on his head. His jacket was woolly, with a grey and black pattern going left and right on his jacket. He wore long jeans and brown shoes. He was small and slender, probably a little shorter than me. I went red with anger. I stormed up to him.
“WHO ARE YOU!?” I yelled. He turned around and gave a quick look of surprise. He then coughed and gave a polite smile.
“Oh, I’m Ethan.” He replied. He put his hand out for a hand shake. I slapped his hand away. He looked confused by the action.
“This is my spot Ethan!” I yelled. Ethan frowned.
“How was I supposed to know that!?” Ethan asked. I turned around and yelled frustrated. Eli walked up to him.
“Hi, I’m Eli!” She greeted. Ethan gave her look.
“Oh, child. Sorry, I don’t deal with children.” He said. Eli looked heartbroken.
“Oh, okay then.” She said taken aback. I stormed back and lifted him up by the collar of his shirt.
“Leave my spot!” I yelled. He groaned.
“God, I was right this place sucks, I’m getting off this Island.” Ethan said as he jumped out of my grasp. I stopped and looked at him.
“What was that?” I asked. He waved his hand and walked away.
“He-hey! Don’t ignore me!” I yelled. I ran to him and turned him towards me. Rain dripped upon our faces as they closed tightly near each other. He blushed and looked at me.
“It’s rude to ignore someone!” I repeated. Ethan looked at me.
“Listen, forget It, I’m sorry, for upsetting you, I’ll be off this island by tomorrow, so you won’t have to deal with me anymore.” He replied. I let go of him. My eyes went wide.
“How.” I asked In a hushed voice. Ethan walked away.
“Why are you so curious?” He asked somberly. Eli and i followed.
“Because first you steal my spot, then take MY thing, which by the way Is trying to leave the island! I’m the expert!” I yelled. He turned to me and snickered a bit cutely.
“Well, you sure? You’re still here.” He replied. I smiled evilly.
“Oh just watch me, I’ll get us all out of here today.” I replied. Ethan rose an eyebrow curious.
“O-oh? Uh, h-how?” He asked.
“The mysterious captain Gibbsons!” I replied. Eli gasped and covered her mouth.
“Not Him! I hear he eats babies!” Eli gasped. I nodded.
“Isn’t that the coolest!?” I chuckled. Ethan looked at me confused.
“Am I supposed to know who this Gibbsons person Is?” He asked scratching the back of his head. He looked at me. I shook my head ashamed.
“Geez, can tell you’re new to the island.” I replied. He looked at me unamused. Ethan gave me a look. I sat on the ground and put my feet out.
“Well let me tell you the Tale Of Gibbsons.” I replied. Eli sat down on a rock and clapped her hands happily. Ethan sighed and sat down. I smirked.
“There was once a warrior named Gibbsons who sailed on the sea across time, space, and visited dimensions beyond our own very thoughts of imagination.” I started.
“Hold up, what the hell Is this? You’re making this up.” Ethan barked. I shushed him.
“Keep going!” Eli encouraged. I nodded. I fixed my scarf and continued.
“The Great Gibbsons makes his home here for some reason, but every day he ventures out and paves his own route! He goes on many adventures every day! He’s everyone’s hero! Yet, none of us on the island has ever seen him!” I called out. Ethan looked at me skeptically.
“You’re joking right?” He asked. I shook no and he sighed looking unimpressed.
The three of us stood and walked down past town to the port. We sat by the dock.
“I highly doubt this Gibbsons guy exists.” He remarked looking unamused. I smiled and turned to him and sat by the curved tree.
“They say Gibbsons docks his boat here at 7:00 PM every day to set up his midnight fishing expeditions!” I yelled. Ethan looked at me unamused.
“Okay, so If no one’s ever seen him before, how do you know this?” Ethan asked. I glared at him and groaned annoyed.
“You ask too many questions my turn!” I called out. He groaned and leaned against the tree and played with my scarf for a second.
“Fine shoot away.” he groaned annoyed. I ripped my scarf out from his hands and held It annoyed he had touched it. Eli leaned against the tree and watched the water In the distance. I breathed quickly and sat down crossing my arms looking at him.
“How did you even get on this island?” I asked. He sighed.
“Ugh, some ferry brought me here, and now i’m gonna live here.” Ethan said sounding annoyed. I looked at him funnily.
“Sorry, let me rephrase, WHY did you come here, who In their right mind would want to live on this island!?” I asked confused. Ethan blowed off some air.
“Because my stupid father has this stupid dream of being a fisher, so he stupidly decided to this stupid island.” He replied peeved off. I nodded understanding.
“Yeah that’s pretty dumb.” I replied. He nodded mad.
“Yeah, who does he think he is!? Did he even think about me!? I had friends, I had a life, now I’m stuck here, with nobodies.” he replied. I gave him a nasty look before Eli poked my arm.
“Look! A boat pulled In!” Eli proclaimed. I turned and stood up and gasped. I did not recognize the boat. Eli and I looked at each other, our eyes lit up.
“GIBBSONS!” we yelled. Ethan rolled his eyes.
