I rub my eyes, I didn’t sleep at all. Jake had an asthma attack so he’s under supervision. I scratch my head, and I have a book tour soon. I sit in my chair and put my hands in my head. I feel someone tap my shoulder, “Are you okay?” I look from my hands “Maybe, maybe not,”
“What’s wrong?” I look at Owen “Jake had an asthma attack and….I have to go out of town for two months,” I see concern trickle down his face, “Will Jake be alright?” I nod “Yeah, just had a nightmare really bad. It happens every once in a while but he’ll be fine,” He sits down across from me, “At least he’s alright,” I nod “Yeah, it just sucks I have to leave him for two months,”
“Do you not have anyone who can take care of him?”
“Not really, he’s really quiet with people he doesn’t know. Then sometimes he has really bad nightmares, he can be a handful but I love him to death,” He nods, as I speak. I sigh and rub my temples “I don’t want to go but I have too,” the guy from yesterday stops in front of the table. I raise an eyebrow “Yes?” he brushes me off and looks at Owen “Did you hear Jordan is going on a book tour for two months?” I feel my eye twitch. What is up with his guy?
“Yes,” Owen says as he looks up at the guy.
“Are you going? I was thinking of getting his new book, and I read both of the books,” the guy says proudly. I roll my eyes but then feel a surge of panic. I really don’t want this kid to know I’m Jordan.
“I don’t usually go to things like that, it can get loud sometimes; but I do plan on getting the book,” I look at Owen and then the guy who nods “Understandable, well I gotta get back before Gale yells at me...again,” Owen nods, “Tell her I said hi, I haven’t seen her in a while,” the guy nods and walks back to the desk.
“That guy ticks me off,” I mutter. Owen looks down at the book he’s holding, “Why?” His voice a little curious.
“Because he’s so….interested in Jordan Prince,” it sounds stupid but I have never met a fan who’s that interested in me. Not even the girls. And the looks he gives me are just...offish, like I’m going to steal somethin’ from him.
“Jordan’s a good author, but Percy hasn’t read his books for long, remember yesterday,” He continues to read the back of a book, not really looking up.
“You sound like you read all of his books or somethin’,” He looks up at me, “That’s because I have, except for one though, the library doesn’t have it, unfortunately,” I look at him, surprised “What book do they not have?”
“His first book, it was damaged and they never found the time to replace it,” He goes back to reading the book. My first book?
“The Blue Flame?” He nods, “Bingo,” I blink then get up, “Hold on a second, I’ll be back,” I walk out of the library and open my car door. I pop the trunk and look around. Where the hell did I put it…oh. I pick it up and look at it. A hard copy. I walk back in and sit down; putting the book in front of him. He looks down at it, picking it up, “Wow, you’ve just got a copy of this lying around? Especially a hardcover?”
I feel my lips twitch, “You can say somethin’ like that, you can have it,” It’s not like I have another one at home. He looks up at me, “Really?” His usually calm face looks excited. I chuckle “Yeah, I think it’s signed too,” not quite sure but hey, who the hell doesn’t like a signed book? Even I got happy ‘bout that when I was younger. He opens the book, “Cool,” He says quietly.
I pat his head “Hope you like it,” He nods slightly, too focused on the book.
“You alright? You look like you might yell or somethin’” He stands up abruptly, reaching across the table, hugging me, “I can’t express how happy I am, they only had a limited amount of copies for this book, trying to find one is very hard. Thank you, thank you, thank you,” I laugh and pet his head “Don’t mention it,” He lets go of me, his face showing slight traces of pink, “Sorry, I’m just… I didn’t get a chance to read it. I’m not one to shout much,” He rubs his arm.
I smile “It’s alright, I’m just glad you’re happy,” He nods, looking down at the book. I chuckle and look at my watch. They should start printing the new book by now. Maybe I should give him the first one. He sits back down, looking at the book, truly fascinated.
I chuckle as my phone goes off “Hello?...yeah…..oh good….he calls him what? Uh….ok then, yeah I’ll pick him up, thanks,” I look at Owen, a curious look on his face.
“You made a good impression with Jake, he even asked for you,” He gives me a surprised look, tucking hair behind his ear.
“Do you do that when you’re surprised?”
“Do what?” I smile faintly, “You tuck your hair behind your ear, you did it the other day too,”
“Oh,” He says softly. I chuckle “I like your hair,” I play with the tips of his hair, “Thanks I guess, I was planning to get it cut through…”
“Really?”
“Yeah, it's been getting pretty long,” I hum and look at the time.
“Wanna come to the hospital?”
He just looks at me for a little bit, “Um… If it’s okay with you,”
I smile, “I don’t mind, you can take the book with you,” He nods.
“Okay, just let me return some books, that’s all I really have to do,” I nod and grab my keys. Owen picks up his books, walking towards the front of the library. I stand next to him and wait while the guy checks out the books, he looks at me as he does.
“That should be it, I’m not done with my other books,” Owen says as he picks up the books he had already. Percy nods and sniffs. He finishes and gives me a weird look. I look around as Owen gets his books, “Ready?” He nods, “Yeah; Bye Percy,” He waves at him.
The guy, Percy, waves shortly. I raise an eyebrow as I open the door, “What’s up with him?” Owen shrugs as he walks with me, “You guys don’t like each other,” I shrug and unlock the doors to my white truck.
“That one?” Owen nods towards my truck.
“Yep,” I open the door for him, “Thank you,” He says as he places his books in first, hopping in afterward. I close the door and walk around to my side, hopping in. I start the truck and hum softly.
“So….tell me ‘bout yourself,”
“First off, I have motion sickness, please don’t go fast,” I nod, “I won’t,” He lets out a sigh as he looks down, “Um… what do you want to know?”
“Anythin’ really, what do you do for work?”
“I’m an artist,” I nod.
“Any sibilin’s?” He nods slightly, “Yeah, a little brother,”
“You like readin’.....clearly,” He laughs lightly, “Yeah, I spend a lot of time at the library,”
“Can I ask why?”
“I just like the books,” His answer wavered. I purse my lips and don’t push it, “How long have you read Prince’s books? Since you read them all,” He thinks a bit, “I started a little after his second book,” I nod. So sometime last year.
“What’s your favorite book so far from him?” He thinks about it, “I can’t choose,” I hum and turn.
“What do you think will happen in the next book?”
“You asked me that last time. Maybe Sebastian will discover the valley, but probably before the conflict with him and Finn clears up, or maybe it won’t,”
“And Claire? What do you think will happen to her? You do know she’s…” I stop, not trying to talk about the next book.
“Claire? Her part in the book is interesting, but not a lot really is shown about her. That’s why most people skim over her character, she isn’t just the love interest,” I nod. True.
“Such a sad endin’ though, how Gavin died,” He nods, “Yeah, I liked his character a lot, his development was done well for the first book of a series, I don’t see that often,” I tilt my head and smirk. We pull up at the hospital, “Here we are,”
“Yeah, this is indeed a hospital,” He says as he opens the door, getting out. I chuckle “Or is it? For all we know, it looks like a hospital,”
“Then let’s find out,” I nod and open the door, the smell of sterile fills my nose. I cringe; I hate hospitals. We reach Jakes room and his eyes light up “Uncle! Uncles Fan!” Owen points to himself, “I’m Uncles Fan I assume?” he nods “Yep!” I raise an eyebrow. What? Did I miss somethin’?
I look at them both, “Am I messin’ somethin’?” Owen looks back at me and chuckles, “You do realize I read your books,” I blink. What? Wait….oh god.
“Wait you….Jake,” I raise an eyebrow, he smiles, “You told him didn’t you?” Jake nods happily. I feel my face heat up as I shake my head.
“I just played along when you started talking about your own books,” Owen laughs lightly. Oh my god.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Owen shrugs, “Why would I? I was talking with Liam, not Jordan,” I look down as my face gets hotter.
“I guess….” I look away then run a hand through my hair. I put my hat on Jake as he giggles.
“How are chu?” he asks Owen. Owen smiles as he sits on the edge of Jakes bed, “I’m doing good, how about you?”
“I’m better,” he plays with the tips of Owens' hair. Owen nods, “That’s good,”
“You made Uncle blush,” he giggles, making me scowl. I sit next to Owen and lean so I’m kind of in front of him. I smile at Jake, “Are you comin’ with me for my tour?” he nods as he looks at Owen.
“That sounds like fun,” Owen smiles. Jake nods “It is,” I tilt my head and look at Owen. My eyes widen at how close we are.
“You okay?” I clear my throat and back away “Yeah, I’m fine, Jake you’ll be discharged as soon as I sign the papers. I’ll do that, I’ll be back,” I get up and walk to the door.
