“She's awake?” Mei heard a voice said while trying to adjust her eyes from the bright light blinding her. Mei shut her eyes once more and when she opened them, she saw two older ladies looking at her with teary eyes. “Mei! Finally! She's awake.” So my name's Mei, huh? She said to herself. The young girl rose up slowly from the bed and scanned the whole room. There were about four people she doesn't recognize in the room. Only the man wearing a lab coat can she easily make of. The doctor. Two middle aged ladies. One tall middle aged man and a tall young guy in black suit.
She didn't say anything and just looked at them carefully. Observing. What caught her eye was that tall young man leaning on the wall. It was as if he's just a shadow. Just a background who no one notices until they look at him carefully.
“Mei? Miss Kim? Do you know where you are?” Says the man in a lab coat. Doctor. Mei muttered under her breath again.
“The hospital.” You said slowly with your head aching. The doctor gave her a firm smile and scanned the whole room.
“Do you perhaps know who you're with? And who are these people.” She took another glance on them then slowly shook her head. There were gasps in the whole room then covered with silence again. She looked at the people in the room for their reaction. All them were surprised. She smiled slightly then looked at the doctor again. It wasn't a smile of joy but a smile of disbelief.
“I don't seem to remember.” Mei said as she was distracted by a sudden scream. One of the older ladies fell on her knees looking so weak.
“My poor niece. My beautiful niece. Why would God give her such life? She doesn't even look one bit of my bright niece anymore. Oh! My heart hurts. I'm in so much pain.” The auntie said while pounding on her chest. She looks like an overrated actress waiting to be be paid with her minimum wage.
Niece? So she's my auntie? Mei said inside her head. She looked at the two men in front of her. The younger one didn't change his expression while the older one rushed to your side and pat your head. “It'll be okay Mei. Uncle Garrett is here for you.” You gave him a nod then took a deep breath. You leaned over to your side and saw the younger tall man with his eyes shut as if he’s thinking.
The doctor continued filling her with instructions in how to cope with remember her past memories but Mei's mind was elsewhere. More like to one person. That tall timid young man.
“I think it's better if we just hear all of this instead. Right, Garrett?” Her uncle and the two aunts nodded to themselves and motiones the doctor to leave the room with them. The doctor obliged. The left the room without even taking a glance at the tall young man beside them.
“So?” She asked while trying not to look at him. “What's your story? Are you perhaps a ghost and I'm supposed to be the only one to see you?” He took a deep breath in then opened his eyes to look at her. She immediately gasped in surprise when she saw his eyes. Eyes that were full of sadness and longing. He walked towards her slowly as the girl saw tears forming in his eyes.
“I'm sorry.” He said in barely a whisper. She looked at him in confusion. Mei didn't even know what came to her but she reached out to wiped her tears away. Before she was able to pull back from her initial reaction, the man held her hand to her face and looked at her with so much warmth and love. “I'm sorry, Mei. I couldn't save them. I'm sorry I’m late.”
