“They’re sending us away, Naomi.” Amelia said that night in her bed, unable to sleep. She didn’t want to go to another new place. She still didn’t like being at the hospital.
“I know.” The other girl responded, her voice soft. “Savvy said it was good.” Amelia only grunted in response. “She said it means that we’re good. Least we’ll be together.”
Amelia hummed. “Guess so, yeah.”
“Savvy said it’s a good thing.” Naomi repeated. “She knows ‘cause she already lived like that before.”
The older girl sighed and rolled over in her bed. “Yeah. But what if it’s like before?”
“I dunno.”
“We should talk. Everyone.”
Naomi nodded, and sat up, getting out of bed. “Call Sam then. I’ll get Savvy and Claire.” Amelia nodded at Naomi, watching her go, before picking up the phone and carefully pressing the numbers for Sam’s room.
They all met up in the courtyard, the only part of the hospital that was outside that they could go without getting in trouble or having an adult with them. Sam was acting fidgety and looking around nervously, as he had been ever since they got to the hospital. Amelia was very similar. Savvy and Derek were much more relaxed than the rest of them, and Claire and Naomi both seemed very unsure about everything and fairly quiet. They all stood in the chilly late autumn air, looking up at the night sky, covered with dark clouds.
“They’re sending us away.” Amelia said to everyone after a while, looking unsure and uncomfortable.
“They won’t get us nowhere if we don’t wanna go.” Sam snapped.
“It’s not a big deal guys.” Savvy said. “It’s a foster home. I’ve been in those before. Most were okay. I was blind for most of them, and the last one didn’t end so great. But anyway, my point is that they aren’t all bad. It’s a good thing.”
“How do we know we aren’t going someplace bad?” Claire asked, looking a bit scared.
“They know everything, Claire.” Derek put in. “They won’t put us anywhere bad.”
“Yeah but who’s Amber Donovan?” Amelia snapped, looking annoyed. “How do we know she’s not bad like him?”
“Guys.” Savvy said, reaching out to hold Naomi’s hand reassuringly. “It’s gonna be okay. Chill out.” She looked them all in the eyes, serious. “We’re staying together and we’re going to be okay. Alright? I know it’s different, and kind of strange. But we’ll be okay.” She looked at them all again. “Okay?”
“Yeah.” Amelia responded, looking down towards the ground. She looked uncomfortable with the idea, and she was. “If you say, then yeah.”
Sam nodded as well, agreeing with Amelia. Naomi still looked unsure, but she squeezed Savvy’s hand and that was her answer. Derek shrugged. He had always been okay with it. But he was glad that everyone else was starting to as well. Claire frowned, her sunken eyes looking up at the rest of the group before nodding weakly. “If we all go.”
