"Tris... save me..."
So this is what being dead feels like…
…
I jolted up, coughing up junk out of my throat. I started breathing hard, wondering where I was.
Wait a second. I was breathing. I could breathe!
But wait. Wait. I looked at all of my surroundings, as well as what I was laying on. I was laying on old parts, possibly from old inventions and other robot parts. The only things that surrounded me were old buildings and clusters of leafless trees. I stood up and looked above me.
Dark clouds. An even darker sky.
A dark world.
"T-Tris?" I stammered, shivering. I guess the pollution clouds can only produce cold weather. I took one step forward to see what was off in the distance. More buildings.
"Y-Yes, M-Mark?" Tris talked like she was shivering as well. Could she feel the heat and the cold as well?
"Status update. I-I don't kn-know, something." I started walking towards a building that had its windows shattered. Almost half of the building was mostly covered by old parts, so I had to climb in through a window.
"W-Well, we're about one hundred and ninety seven miles away from the A-Alversia ship, there's little to no oxygen down here, and the R-Roots needs to be charged. I think I need to be too..." Tris moaned in despair, somehow shifting off. I let her as I crawled through the window, landing on the cement floor. There was a office chair that had a worn-down blanket over the top. I took it and wrapped myself in it to keep warm. I shivered once more, looking around for more supplies.
I have to recreate a charger for my Roots... I thought as I went down the stairs in search for more stuff.
Ugh... what am I going to eat? I spotted a fridge, throwing it open. The door of the fridge fell off, slamming onto the ground. Oh well.
There was some applesauce and fruit cocktail cans, both somewhat warm. I checked the date on both of them.
"August 20th, 2050. It's still good, somehow." I said aloud. I searched around for a spoon and can opener. I found both of them and chowed down, eating every last of it. I went back upstairs and sat in the office chair, thinking about how to recreate the charger.
I'm gonna need a car battery... some wires... hopefully a laptop or something close to it... but wait... I don't think I'm gonna have enough power to get back up to Alversia with the Roots... I'm going to need a... an airplane of sorts, yea! An old aircraft should do the trick. I nodded and stood up.
Time to do some scavenging.
----~----
Along the way, I had found a backpack to carry my stuff in. I had four car batteries, a spool of wires, a phone that can connect to those wires with a little tinkering, and even some gasoline and an old MultiTool. All I need was a…
"Airplane!" I yelled, running towards it. I hugged it tightly, knowing that it was my one-way ticket out of here. Its windshield was even intact. The aircraft has a triangular shape to it, it being one of newer airplanes of the future. However, it was a two person plane. But nevermind that. Now came the hard part.
Dragging this thing back to base. I hopped inside the aircraft, sitting in the pilot's seat. Models these days were so easy to work with, even a baby could pilot it. I deployed the landing gear, making the aircraft jump up a bit. I hopped out and started to push. Even if it was light to push, I still had to strain to make it to base. It started to get darker, which meant for it to be colder. I parked the aircraft right in front of the window and jumped inside, wrapping the blanket around me tighter. I threw the backpack on the desk in front of the chair and grabbed my MultiTool.
I had work to do.
----~----
I twined the wires around and into my Roots. The phone lit up, showing the battery percentage of the Roots were at ten percent. I sighed in relief and fell onto the chair, wrapping the blanket around me even tighter. Even though it was dark outside, I could sense that the sun had risen and that it was morning. I heard a yawn in my ear, which made me crack a smile.
"Good morning, Sleeping Beauty. How was your nap?" I asked her, going outside to check on the airplane.
"Nice... sweet... and relaxing. What did you do while I was asleep?" She asked me.
"Well, I found us a way out of here," I replied, knocking on the hard metal of the aircraft. "I also built a charger from car batteries, wires, and a phone."
"Awesome! I never knew you were so smart..." Tris said. I nodded and went inside, dragging the extra rockets, some wires, and my MultiTool outside.
"Tris, could you do the honors?" I asked her politely. For a quick second, I saw a spark that jumped from my SOuND to the aircraft. I smiled and patted the dashboard.
"Thank you." I said.
"WOW! There's a lot of options and settings in here!" Tris squealed with glee. I chuckled to myself and grabbed a metal hook from the ground. I screwed it into the aircraft, making a holder for the rockets. I did the same for the other side, sliding the rockets into the holders.
"Tris, where is the electrical compartment on this?"
"In the back, close to the bottom." I spotted it immediately and tore it open, as well as the same for the rockets. I plugged in the wires from the rockets to the electrical compartment, shutting both and hopping into the pilot's seat. I cut the engine on. All four rockets slowly came to life with no problem.
I leaned back into the pilot's chair.
"I'm not smart, I'm an evil genius." I stated, doing a fake evil laugh. Tris chuckled with delight. I hopped out of the pilot's seat and back inside, checking the phone. The battery life of the Roots up to fifty-one percent. I sighed, sadness sprinkled in my voice.
"What's the matter?" Tris said to me.
"I miss her."
"Who, your mother? I'm sure she's fine-"
"Her too, but, the real... you. I just have this feeling she's… in danger or something. It's giving me the creeps." I admitted, shivering once more. I looked down at the ground in despair.
"Well, if you do want to see what's going on up there, you have to take that ship you built!" Tris shouted. I looked up and nodded, feeling confident. I threw the Roots in the plane, letting it charge in the passenger seat. I checked the phone again, the Roots being at sixty-seven percent. I sighed and started the engine.
"Time to leave my home... for a second time." I said, the airplane taking off. I retracted the landing gear and tilted the steering wheel up. The pollution clouds were rapidly approaching. I sighed and smirked.
"Come on, you can make it..." I promised myself, kicking it into second gear. I dove right into the clouds, which I learned was a combination of smog, acid, and water. Nasty. I yelled as I kicked it into third gear. We blasted out of the clouds without a hitch after that, going higher.
"Um, Mark? We lost a rocket." I heard Tris say.
"We're going to make it." I spoke. I heard a loud boom from outside of the plane.
"Another one is gone, Mark. But keep going." She said, cheering me on. I took a deep breath and pressed on, going higher and higher. The edge was coming into view.
"We're... almost there..." I grunted. The edge came closer into view. A smirked formed onto my face. I checked the phone one last time.
Ninety- seven percent.
"Mark... whatever you're thinking, I don't think it's a good idea..." Tris whispered, starting to worry for me.
"Eject." I said. The seat ejected, and I was thrown out of the aircraft.
"Tris, a little help?" I said calmly as I started to fall again. The boots latched onto my feet once more, taking me up to reach my destination.
Home.
----~----
It was dark when I landed in front of my house. "Welcome home, Mr. Mark." I heard the door say. I ran into my parents' room to see my mother laying on her bed, probably thinking about what happened a couple days before. She sat up, her eyes welling up with emotion.
"M-Mark...?" My mother stammered, throwing herself at me. She bawled her eyes out, giving me a heart-warming hug. I smiled and returned the favor.
"I-I thought you were stuck down there, forever... I thought I would never see my baby ever again..." She cooed. I sighed.
"Mom, you know I'm an inventor. I would've made it back." I said. She released me from her hug and sat on her bed.
"Terrible things have been happening since you left." My mother said warily.
"Like...?" I questioned her. I heard glass shatter in the living room. I frowned and grabbed my mother's hand, taking her with me.
"Listen Evan, first you ruin our family, next you-" I gasped and stood back. I saw an arm stretch through the shattered window. And it was really, really pale... I saw the figure outside, who was wearing a SOuND.
SOuND turns people... into zombies?
