I kneeled down and took off one of the Roots, attaching it to Louisiana's foot. It resized itself, dinging when it was ready. I smiled, silently thanking Mark for putting in that feature.
A car smashed into the ground not too far from us, telling me that we didn't have much time.
"Avrilon, where are we going?" Louisiana asked, staring at my movements.
"Well, sweetie, as you can see, there are things falling from the sky. Things from an Alversia ship that can potentially kill us. You see, I need to get you up there, to safety. Someone, or something, is doing this, and I have to stop it." Louisiana's eyes started to glisten with hope.
"Let me facilitate! You know you're going to need help, I'm right here behind you!" The girl proclaimed, grabbing Echo from the straps on my back, struggling with it until she fell on her back. I laughed, bending down to pick it back up.
"I'm sorry sweetie, but the sword is a little too big for you, just like this situation." I said, looking up again. Concrete from buildings started to rain down upon us, making me feel a bit nervous.
"Oh please, Avrilon! Please?" Louisiana rebutted multiple times to try to convince me to fight, but I knew she couldn't. I couldn't let her get hurt.
Mark wouldn't have wanted that.
She soon succumb to my orders, but I had a sneaking suspicion that she was going to revolt.
"Listen, OK? You're old enough to listen, right? You're going to fly with me to the top. Don't let go of my hand, no matter what. We're going to go fast, so we both won't get hit by anything. When we make it to the top, that's when I will make my decision on what we're going to do." I put a firm grasp on her shoulders. "Do you understand?"
Louisiana nodded, tugging on her nightgown. I grinned and grabbed her hand, blasting off a little early so she could get the hang of being in the air. She smiled at me after a couple of minutes, telling me that she was ready. I turned to the clouds and shot off towards them, already starting to dodge streetlamps and alarm clocks.
We broke through the blanket of smog, zipping past even more debris that was flying at us. I glanced over to Louisiana, who was still hanging on for her life. I nodded and flew even faster, wondering when the opening was going to appear.
Louisiana screamed behind me as a huge chunk of a wall came hurdling down towards us. I grunted and drew my sword, slicing the rock into two with ease. I breathed out softly, then continued on our way. The wall left a trail that led to the outside. I held my breath, struggling before we popped out of the clouds. Louisiana let go of my hand, floating next to me and coughing heavily. I pat her back, congratulating her on what she just endured.
"We're here. The Alversia ships. Minus one, of course." Smoke surrounded the Alversia ship that was tipped over and sinking. Destruction covered it like a blanket on a bed.
"Wait a second..." I muttered, squinting at the fallen ship. Its placement looked familiar, like from a textbook we learned in grade school.
I turned to Louisiana, who covered her mouth in shock.
"That was the European ship... C'mon, we gotta land. I have to give you stuff to protect yourself." I grabbed her hand once more, swinging down towards the edge of the American ship. Screams became audible, even from the edge.
"The world! It's going mad!"
"Did you just see what happened?!"
"Oh, Lord! The humanity!"
I shook my head, ignoring them and clicking the pendant.
"Here, take these." I handed Louisiana an earpiece, the helmet, and the old pair of Roots.
"No weapon? I think I might be able to handle it, y'know." She smirked, trying to act tough. I giggled, looking at her in the eyes and trying to act serious.
"This isn't a game. People's lives are in danger, OK? I don't have a weapon to give to you, sorry." I lied, tucking the pistols away in the inventory. I stretched and started to walk, dragging the girl along with me.
"Wait, where are we going?" I picked up the pace by jogging, turning onto another street roughly.
"I need to get you to my house, where you'll be safe. C'mon!" We pushed by many people before reaching my house. I carried Louisiana to my room quickly, setting her on my bed.
"I'm going to see what's going on out there. Now, a man might come up here and ask about you. All you have to do is introduce yourself nicely and tell him that Avrilon will be back. You think you can handle that?" I said, fishing around in my closet for something more appropriate for her to wear.
"But why did you give me all of this stuff if I wouldn't be fighting?" Louisiana shot back, standing up. "I want to fight too!"
I turned to her and sighed, sitting next to her on the bed. I fell onto my back, looking up at the ceiling.
"Your father. He wouldn't want you fighting, and I wouldn't either if you were my daughter."
"He's dead! Why does his opinion matter? He doesn't have a say in what I can do anymore!" The ten year old girl yelled at me, standing up and crossing her arms. My eyes welled with tears, sitting up to cover them with my hands.
"Even if he is dead... he's still alive in my heart. He was a great man. Mark was nowhere near being opaque; he was always straight-forward and got things done. That's why I did this for him. What else could I have done?" I sobbed silently, tears sliding down towards my jeans. Louisiana looked at me, shocked. She climbed back onto the bed next to me, putting her head on the side of my arm.
"He really meant that much to you... he must have been an important influence in your life." I looked at the ground, nodding.
"Yea. He was."
A loud explosion caught my ears' attention. I wiped my tears and went to the window, throwing it open. I slammed my hands on the windowsill and walked over the girl. "Listen, remember what I told you. Stay safe. Use that stuff in case of an emergency. I have to handle this." I gave Louisiana a peck on the forehead, ruffling her hair for good measure. Louisiana smiled, wrapping me in a weak hug.
"You better come back. I mean, please... come back." I returned the smile, running out of the room and out of the house, shooting off to get a better view of all of the ships.
"Someone must be firing missiles or something..." I glanced at the European Alversia ship, which the edge of it was peeking out of the dark clouds. I clenched my fists, getting mad at whoever did this.
Killing innocent people was a no-no in my book.
Destroying a whole continent was a REALLY big no-no in my book.
I felt like I was being watched, therefore my instincts told me to turn my head.
And there it was.
SPAWN.
