I wish I could go into all the ways in which Buck's family hurt and neglected him, but let's not make this story even more drawn out shall we?
For the record, his parents do love him, just in a sort of 'What do we d with you?' Kind of way. They were not prepared for a child who was 'different'. And while they weren't cruel on purpose, misunderstanding and neglect can do just as much damage.
