Eliza:
It was my day to run in the maze. I hadn’t been in their since the fire and I found myself missing it a lot. I had asked to go in before but they wouldn’t let me telling me that I needed to heal more, so I stayed in the glade a healed.
Minho had already left, I think in the maze, but I wasn’t sure.
I headed out of the room and to the map room grabbing my stuff and getting ready. Once I had my backpack and my lunch and everything I headed to the doors. Minho and Alby rounded the corner farther ahead of me as I sprinted to catch up with them. They were fast I would give them that, but I was still faster.
After a few minutes I caught up with them almost but they had stopped and I froze in my spot. There lying on the ground was a griver. It looked dead but I could tell that it wasn’t, I didn’t know how but there was something screaming out at me that it was alive.
Alby walked closer to it before I even noticed or could say anything.
“Alby wait!” I called but it was too late. Minho and Alby turned to looked at me but the sound of the griver moving pulled their attention back.
The griver stood trusting its poison needle into Alby’s side. I let out a cry as I watched Alby fall to the ground. The griver froze staring at me before disappearing behind the corridors. I ran over looking down the corridor but found nothing down there.
“Eliza lets go!” Minho yelled catching my attention. I looked up at the sky realizing that it had already began to darken. I didn’t think that we had been in here that long but I guess I was wrong. We needed to move before the doors closed trapping us in here. In most cases I wouldn’t care but because of Alby we needed to get him help before he died. If we didn’t get out he would die and I didn’t think that I could do that.
“Yeah!” I called to him running over and helping with Minho.
We each grabbed an arm running to the doors. He was quite heavy slowing our pace but we were getting close.
“Why did you come in Eliza?”
“Because it was my day to run, I asked Newt the day before.” I could tell he was angry with me, but it didn’t matter, if I hadn’t come he could’ve gotten stung as well.
“But you haven’t healed all the way yet.”
“Your right I have't healed in the 5 days that I have been resting, but I can’t be stuff in there forever, I’m going insane. There is nothing to do and when you are gone I have no one to hang out with, everyone is busy.” I knew that my leg was fine and that it didn't hurt bad at all.
I looked away from him and in front of us just focusing on getting out. I could tell that his anger wasn’t going to go away any time soon, but it didn’t matter. It only matter that I got to them fast enough.
Soon the doors were in view. They hadn’t closed yet, we were going to make it.
Just as those words filled my head that sound of the doors moving pulled me out of my thoughts. I could see all the boys standing behind the doors screaming at us to hurry. Newt and Thomas were in the front, there eyes filled with worry. We were still far off and the doors almost shut. I tried to move faster but tripped on my own foot, sending all the weight on Minho who dropped Alby, as I fell to the ground.
I tried to stand up but pain flared up in my ankle. I looked up at Minho who looked down at me as we both realized there was no getting out.
I looked back to the boys as I said a silent bye, and to be safe.
The doors were about to shut and I could only make out a few boys but Thomas, the slithead he was, ran in the maze, squeezing himself through the crack of the doors. The doors shutting closer worrying me that he was going to be squeezed, but with one final push he was out and on the ground panting.
“Good Job you just killed yourself.” Minho said looking at Thomas.
“Why did you come in Thomas, you don’t know what you just got yourself into,” I told him trying to think of how I was going to keep them all safe.
“Come on guys we have to get moving before another griver finds us.” Minho said standing up.
“And leave Alby here to die?” Thomas said looking at Alby as I looked at Minho hurt written across my face. How could he even think about leaving Alby to die.
“He is dead anyways. There is nothing we can do for him now.” he looked at me, and the hurt in my eyes, “I’m sorry Eliza I know you liked him.”
“No!” I said sternly, “We are not leaving him to die. Let's tie him up in the vines.”
“That's a great idea Eliza!” Thomas said smiling.
I gave him a reassuring smile, before looking back at Minho, who sent a glare Thomas’s way.
“Fine, but we need to do it fast.” I leg out a breath as we all worked together to get him tangled in the vines and than high up on the wall. Once he was up at high as we could get him we tied off the vine and turned looking at each other.
“Can we move now?” he asked looking at us waiting of any complaints.
I opened my mouth to speak but was cut off but the familiar clanking of a griver. My eyes widened as I looked at the boys who hadn’t seemed to hear it yet. It came again as I realized where it was.
“Minho, it’s too late.” I said in a whisper. He looked at my confused.
“Why is it too late.” A line of drool dropped onto Thomas shoulder proving my point.
I head the creaking of the griver as it began to fall, “Move!” I shouted as we all scattered. Thomas and Minho on one side of it and me on the other side of it. The Griver looked at me before turning and looking at the boys. I knew what it was going to do and I couldn’t let it do that. I couldn’t watch them die on me as well.
'Over here Griver. I was the one who betrayed you joining the boys. Come get me.'
The griver turned looking at me as I started off. I could hear the griver moving but not fast enough. “Run boys! Griver I’m the one you want. Come and get me before I kill you.” that struck the Griver. It started after me as I heard the boys yelling behind me.
I ran down the maze as the Griver ran behind me. I looked behind seeing nothing but the griver, so I just hopped that the boys were able to be safe.
“Eliza over here!” I recognized the voice as Thomas.
“What are you doing. I don’t need your help!” I yelled back hoping he would leave again.
“Hurry up.”
I turned looking at where he was. It was a wall that had already started to move and was closing. I signed knowing it was probably the only way I was going to get out of this and if I didn’t take it I might not come back and see them.
I turned seeing the griver falling behind before I took off to the walls. I slide through them as they closed. I felt as if I might be squeezed but at the last minute I made it through on the other side of the wall. The griver hadn’t followed me in and I could hear its cried of defeat from the other side of the wall. I turned around facing Thomas, punching him in the shoulder. “I told you to run!”
“But I had to help you. You would’ve died.” I signed seeing the fear in his face.
“I’m sorry for punching you but you are an idiot. I had it covered and didn’t need your help, you could’ve got yourself killed.”
“Im sorry Eliza,” I cut him off before he could say anything else, “it is fine don’t worry. Where is Minho?”
“Right behind you.” I turned seeing his out of breath face, “I am beginning to feel slow compared to the two of you.”
I let out a chuckle pulling both the boys into a hug. “I’m glad you are both safe.”
When I let go we started off trying to find the way to the door ready for the light to return to the sky so we could go home. As we made our way there I heard Thomas let out a gasp as he ran past us pulling us with him. I turned my head looking behind us as I saw another griver. This one wasn't as frightening as the other for I knew which griver this was and was not afraid of it.
I pulled me hand out of Thomas’ grasp as I walked back over to the griver.
“Eliza what are you doing?” Minho called behind me fear in his voice.
I turned looking at him giving him a smile, “Don’t worry I’ll be fine.”
‘Hello, Khala I’ve missed you’ I said walking closer to him lifting my hand up,
‘Mistress. What are you doing back in here, you know that it, isn't safe. What if one of the others finds you?’ Khala said glancing around
‘I already ran into another and they tried to kill me but it is okay. I know it isn’t safe, but the sooner we find the way out the sooner I can show everyone what it truly happening here.’'
Khala made a approved clicking sound as I talked. ’Very well Mistress, but please take caution and know that not all of us are as kind. Many would love to watch you die.’
I nodded at him as I put my hand down stepping back a little. ‘The light will return to the sky soon, you must go before they know that it does not affect you. Quickly my friend, go.’
‘Goodbye mistress, remember I will always be ready for you when you return. I will protect you.’’
“Thank you.” I said placing my hand on my heart smiling at him before putting it down and watching him disappear behind the corner of the wall.
I turned around facing the boys, Thomas’ mouth hanging open his eye wide in shock at what had happened, Minho just a smile on his face. I walked over to the knowing that nothing else would happen tonight and that we were finally safe. We were going to make it out of here.
“What did you do Eliza?” Thomas asked his mouth still hanging open.
“I was just talking to Khala.” after the words had left my mouth I realized that he didn’t know I could talk to the grievers, or that I was friends with them, or was.
“What-” I cut him off, “don’t worry about it.”
I looked to Minho “You still think it is crazy?”
“No, i’ve just learned that you truly are different and it doesn’t matter. You are amazing.” I let a smile grow on my face.
We started walking again walking back to the wall that had closed figuring out that it was the way to the doors. When we walked past the wall that had closed as I glance at it thinking what would’ve happened it I hadn’t gotten through it. I continued walking with the boys letting the thought drop out of my mind, it didn’t matter know anyways.
“Hey Eliza?” Thomas asked stopping.
“What is it Thomas?” I asked wondering what he needed now. I could see the light slowly coming to the sky. We needed to get back to the doors.
“What is the chance that that griver is back? The one you were talking to?”
“I don’t know, I doubt it. Why?”
At this point Minho had turned around to see why we had stopped and were talking again. When he turned his face paled and his eyes widened. “Eliza watch out!” he yelled running over to me.
I turned around seeing another griver its needle flying at me. I moved to the side trying to dodge the needle as Minho grabbed my hand pulling me back. Somehow I watched the needle fly right past my face, inches from hitting me.
‘You have betrayed us! You need to pay!’ the griver cried out.
When it was away from my face I reached down grabbing the daggers from my boot before standing up and rolling under the griver. I used the spikes all over its body to boost myself up on top of the griver moving towards its head and the weak spot in the crevice of its neck. When I got up there the griver was squirming all over trying to throw me off but it was too late. I had gotten ahold of one of the spikes and wouldn’t fall now. Using one of my hands I lifted my dagger bringing it down right onto the soft spot of its neck.
‘I am sorry. I wish it didn’t have to be this way, I am sorry it had to end like this,’
The griver let out a cry of pain as it fell to the ground not to get back up.
I climbed off the back of the griver stumbling away falling on the ground a few feet away from it. Minho ran over to me checking me up and down to make sure that I hadn’t been stung, Thomas frozen in his spot. I felt tears falling out of my eyes as I looked at the body of the griver in front of me.
“Hey are you okay?” Minho asked pulling me in for a hug.
“I...I killed him. I killed the griver.” I cried more tears falling out as I realized I had really done it.
“You had to. It’s not your fault.”
“But he didn’t deserve it. I had betrayed him and he was hurt. He wanted to make me suffer. It was my fault. Why did I kill him?” my voice cracking as I buried my head in his chest..
Minho let me go placing his hands on my facing pulling it up until I was looking at him, “Look you save us. You had no choice, so stop talking it so harshly. There was nothing else that you could do.”
I nodded my head whipping away the tears. He was right.. He had attacked me and I simply defended myself and my friends. I had to do it, or else Minho and Thomas wouldn’ve died as well. I looked up at Thomas as he had gotten back to his senses and moved over by us. His eyes were still wide and he looked scared still. I stood up giving him a hug before pulling away and making sure he was okay.
After several minutes we started off again. I had my dagger in my hand prepared for anything now. I was ready in case another griver appeared. This time I would not let it sneak up on me.
The sky was bright as the day started. I could hear the sound of the doors opening as we were almost there. We went to where we had hung up Alby pulling him down from the vines and untying him, before setting off for the doors themselves.
We turned the corner seeing the doors. Behind them were Newt and Chuck but Newt was walking off following the large crowd of boys. I guess they thought that we didn’t make it. When Chuck turned around I could see the tears in his eyes, but as soon as he say us he let out a happy cry calling the boys over as they all ran to us to help.
I ran ahead of Minho and Thomas meeting Chuck as he pulled me in for a hug crying into my chest.
“Hey it’s okay Chuck, we are back and fine.” that only seemed to make him cry harder, “Hey, it’s okay.”
Newt came over to us and helped Thomas and Minho with Alby bringing him out and lying him on the ground. Jeff, Clint, and one more boy grabbed Alby carrying him off to the Med-Jacks. Chuck had let go of me asking Thomas if he was okay. I sat on the ground in the circle of all the boys placing the dagger back in my boot as the boys asked us all kinds of questions.
I wasn’t listening to them until I heard the familiar voice of the small young boy, “Did you guys see a griver.”
“Yes,” I responded looking up at him.
“We saw several, and Eliza killed one.” the group of boys went quite looking at me.
