“You and Eric are not ready for this., Alic whispered.
“It's two against one, and I am a higher level,” I said.
“It has more health and Mana than you do, it isn’t wearing any armor, but the odds of you being able to defeat it are slim,” Alic said.
“Eric, I’m going to fight, but if it looks like we are losing I want you to run and not stop until you get out of the dungeon. If I die, I’ll come back.” I said softly. Getting ready to fight.
Thinking about my spell, Arcane Bolt cost 10 mana, I regenerated 37 mana a minute in battle. With my mana before regeneration, I could cast the spell 66 times. Doing 17 damage per hit that was 1,122 damage. Every extra minute was 3 extra casts. The question was would I have enough time to cast all of them. I only needed 45 to take out its health, unless it had regeneration or healing abilities.
It was about a second per cast and then the spell had to hit the target. Eric had to be careful or he would die. That was something I couldn’t let happen. Taking a deep breath I got ready for what was to come. Eric drew his short swords. The demon looked at us and smiled.
As it started towards us, I launched my spell. Receiving a welcome notification,
Minor Demon takes 20 damage.
17*20% increased damage due to arcane energy.
This may not be as hard as I thought the demon wasn’t even that fast. Eric closed in on it and started slashing at it from behind, but his swords were doing nothing. One hit sent him sliding back, 10% of his health gone in an instant. It wasn’t even a strong hit.
“Eric, get back,” I said launching more Bolts. So far 6 out of ten hit him. Including the first shot. His health didn’t seem to be regenerating. Which made me breathe a little easier.
Already down to 630 health, I relaxed but the next two casts missed. Taking a deep breath. I relaxed and focused. I’d never had my spell miss before. I was being careless.
Another hit sent Eric slamming into the wall. Shaving 30% more health off of him. I moved between them and launched one bolt after another. His health diminished quickly, but so was my mana.
Only a few minutes had passed, but my mana was almost empty, the enemy still had 75 health left, Eric was down to ten percent so I had him waiting outside of the room. So he could run if I died. He couldn’t afford to take another hit.
I needed four more casts to hit, but he was getting better at dodging my attacks. My skill was progressing with each hit. It already had four level gains. Earning skill increases was easier here. With the Demons weakness to my magic, my bolt did 30 points of damage, normally 25. Three more hits would finish off the demon. But getting those hits was harder now. I only had twenty mana left, enough for two casts. Though it there soon I would get enough for another few casts.
Waiting until the demon closed in on me I launched the bolt into its face and then moved. Even with its high mana, it didn’t seem to cast any spells which worried me. I hit it with another bolt and the demon froze glaring at me. Its whole body wreathed in flames and I could feel the temperature in the room start climbing. Turning I yelled for Eric to run.
It only had 15 health left one cast could finish it off. But I didn’t have the mana to cast it yet. Backing up I prepared to run. When something grabbed me around my waist and I was yanked out of the room. Looking up the guild master was holding me under her arm and running. “I hate Demons,” she screamed.
We had rounded a corner, before a loud boom sounded and then the tunnel started lighting up, flames rounded the corner and the boots the guild master was wearing started glowing and our speed picked up. We were out of the dungeon in a flash. She dropped me on the ground and put her hands on her knees breathing deeply. Eric was already out here.
“Sorry, about that, I didn’t realize it was a Demon or I would have warned you. Minor Demons have high mana and tend to explode if their HP drops below 5%. Higher level demons will actually use magic. I followed so I could see how you progressed. Your skills are under-leveled. But your understanding seems, high. You interest me, little elf.” she said having recovered her breath.
I checked my notifications.

They both looked good, however, I selected the first one. It was less versatile, but it was a major damage boost.
“Why did the Minor Demon give so much Experience?” I asked.
“Demons always give more experience because they are always at least Elite monsters. As such are harder to kill, Also the goddess gives more for defeating beasts of darkness. If I had known it was a demon who had entered I would never have sent others. I would have taken a high-level team in to search. Elite monsters can be tricky. I should have intervened in the beginning, but you were doing well and it surprised me. That is a unique spell you have, little elf.”
“Thank you. If only I had trained with it more before going there, It might have been easier to fight.”
“Why is your spell such a low level? You are level 22, yet if I am not mistaken. Your spell only just entered the beginning rank during the fight. Seeing as it seems your only spell I would imagine it would be stronger.”
“It is a long story, that I’m not sure if I should share. But my magic is new to me.”
“I see, anyway you both qualify for joining the guild. I would start you at the D rank for the performance, but with your skill under-leveled, it won't work well. I will set you both as Rank E Adventurers, and for services rendered to the guild, you will receive 150 quest points. Level your skills, and finish quests get to the capital and take the exam. And you Eric need a blessing to change your stats if you are going to fight as a rogue instead of a knight.”
“We had planned on that already, we just needed to get to the capital,” I said smiling.
“Life won’t be easy in the capital. There are secrets hidden in the shadows that delight in making people disappear.”
“Thank you for your concern, but we must go there,” I said softly.
“The blessing of the goddess is strong but there are things worse than death.”
We talked for a little longer before we left in possession of guild Id’s. the capital seemed like it was a bad place, yet that was where the temple was. We needed the blessing. Eric needed both Immortality and resurrection. Yet we needed to prove we were worthy of it.
We left town the next day and went back into the Forest. Our path to the capital was a long one. I hoped to get Eric another level before we got there.
