“GAH!” I yelled into the open air of the forest. Something had woken me out of the slumber. My head swished from side to side, but there was nothing in near sight. Or at least anything that I could see at the time, since it was mainly darkness that weaved throughout the forest trees.
Reaching for my backpack made something fall in the background. Something was definitely off. I rushed to gather myself together, and ran along the path that led to the park.
The first lamp that I saw, although flickering, put me more in a sense of comfort. I was awake and alive. I breathed out a sigh of relief, and slowed down to a walking pace. I couldn’t grasp what time it was, but it sure was late. I usually didn’t wake up this late at night, as there wasn’t much to do. Sure, scrounging for food would be a pastime, but there comes a time in the night where I myself found the task not that pleasurable.
Other than that, the park was pretty much empty at this point. There were a multitude of lamps scattered throughout, but the park only kept some of them on during the night. This action was understandable, given the city’s high electric usage.
“Now, I should probably find a better spot to sleep…” I moaned, cracking my neck. “Especially somewhere more comfortable.” I had a couple of ideas in mind. I closed my eyes and smiled.
Which was my first mistake.
A hand was placed on my shoulder, making me tense up in the worst way possible. I feared that it was a police officer, as I probably shouldn’t have been treading around at this time of night.
“Yes, officer?” I said in a slow and polite manner.
My second mistake. Assuming.
I turned around to face a girl who was smirking at me, as well as having a wound-up fist behind her that was ready to swing. I jumped mentally and threw my arms up to my face, blocking the hit swiftly. That didn’t stop me from being skidding back several feet and almost tripping in the process.
Heaving out a big breath, I blinked and glanced at my new opponent. I gasped, putting my hands down to get a better look at the girl.
“I-It’s you! I haven’t seen you since that you shoved me into that deli! What the heck do you want now, a pat on the back?” I yelled, my hair standing up a bit. It was strange that this girl was back in my life again, since it had almost been a whole month when she attacked me the first time.
“Oh yes, right. I’m sorry that I haven’t properly introduced myself.” She began to walk towards me while I cautiously took steps back.
“The name is Vanessa. I should look familiar to you by now.” Her mouth took the form of a smirk once again. She took one giant step, shapeshifting into Beatrice and getting into a fighting stance. “Especially if I were to look like this.” She quickly transformed back, but remained in her stance.
My mind was racing at this point. This new person, Vanessa… she must be able to… change forms in some way. That means that she was Beatrice in that café…
My god, this is getting very confus—OOF!
With two feet deeply planted in my gut, I shot across the park’s terrain and onto the scuffled grass, leaving me in a lot of pain.
Lily swung over and landed on all fours next to Vanessa. She brushed a couple strands of hair to the side while she stared over at me.
“Haha, nice one there Lily.” Vanessa commented on Lily’s actions. She scoffed and closed her eyes, offering a simple “I know.” in return, along with a small smile.
Meanwhile, I slammed my fist down and picked myself back up. A move like that could not go unaccounted for.
“HEY!” I barked at the top of my lungs at the two girls. My tail slithered out through my pants while the hood of my jacket seeped down to reveal my ears.
“Not. Cool.” I launched myself at the frog girl, actually managing to get the distance to where she was. However, Lily was quick to squat down, making me fly over her. I growled as I had missed my target—but I wasn’t done yet.
I turned my whole body around and scratched the ground with both my hands and feet, throwing myself at them again. This time, I had my feet pointed towards them and both my arms stretched outright. With this maneuver, I caught both of them by surprised as I snaked between them, grabbing their necks and forcing them down to the cement trail. I aligned myself with the ground once more and stood up, bending down over Lily and picking her head up by her dark green hair.
“Like I said. Not. Cool.” I shoved her face back into the hard cement that we were placed on and rose back up. A kick to my face was made by Vanessa, but I was quick to grab her leg before it made contact with it. It wasn’t to say that my hand wasn’t charged with pain after that blow, but that did mean that I was receiving much less pain than if I had let her hit me.
“Dang… you really hurt my hand there, kiddo. Youch,” I said, grabbing her leg with my other hand and using all of my strength to toss her back to the terrain, with the frog girl right under her.
“GAH! Can’t you watch where you’re going, Vanessa?! That hurt!” Lily squealed from under her. Vanessa could only manage a long groan.
“Now can you guys just leave me alone? It’s all kinds of night and I need me some more sleep, okay? We can do this kind of crap in the morning.” I turned to walk away, but a slimy tongue prevented me from doing so. I growled, rotating to the girl who was getting in my way.
“On behalf of Beatrice, we were sent to capture you… and we intend to do so!” Lily proclaimed, with Vanessa jumping off of her. Using her tongue, she retracted it to pull me closer to her. As soon as I was in punching range, she slammed her fist in my direction. I used my hands to intercept her arm, struggling to keep it from hitting me.
“You want to use your mouth? Fine. I’ll just have to use mine!” In a quick motion, I sunk my teeth into her knuckle with a big grin displayed on my face.
Lily’s head flung backwards, with tears seeping out her eyes and blood dripping out of her hand. I easily switched our positions, pushing Lily to the ground and placing myself overtop of her. I clamped a hand over her mouth and closed my eyes.
I knew that had to hurt. Whoops.
After Lily was done screaming up a lung, she quietly fainted under me. I got up to face Vanessa once more, as she had a more energetic look to her.
“What’s this? Why are you all happy now?” I asked her.
“Because they’re coming.” She clenched her fist and peered over at an unconscious Lily.
“They’ll outmatch you for sure.”
