Taking this new information to heart, I only could assume that something else—something bigger—was coming to take a shot at me.
Either Beatrice wants me dead or has serious issues.
I gritted my teeth and put my hands up in the air. A sign of surrender.
“Alright, alright. No need to call in for help, okay? I am yours for the taking,” I reluctantly said, closing my eyes in defeat.
Vanessa’s eyes lit up like fireworks. “Oh my goodness… W-We did it. We did it. I… I can’t believe it… Thank you… Thank you so much.” She weirdly expressed gratitude me for my cooperation. It looked like Beatrice was really forcing them to do this. I would really hate working for her.
“Yea, yea. You can thank me later,” I spoke, walking up to her. I held my arms up straight out in front of her, putting them a little higher than a usual criminal would. “Well, where’s my handcuffs? Rope? Anything?”
Vanessa nervously scratched her head in response. She honestly didn’t think that they would get this far.
I couldn’t help but smirk after I made that statement. I flattened my hands like pieces of paper and shoved them deep into Vanessa’s neck in a slicing motion, having her quickly fall to the ground in agony.
“I can’t believe how unprepared you people are. They really didn’t expect you to capture me, did they?” I questioned the girl, who laid in the grass semi-unconscious. I held tightly onto my backpack, fleeing deeply into the forest. It only seemed like this would be the only place that would keep me safe.
I barreled through trees, jumped over fallen branches, and dodged hanging undergrowth and anything else that got in my way. I had to escape, or at least keep myself hidden so that this ‘thing’ couldn’t find me. My breath was starting to wear a bit thin, so I flew into the air and rested on a tree branch. My fingers on the hand that was placed on the tree trunk started to dig into it, as I was letting my nervousness get the best of me.
Yes, I admit that I was a bit worried for my wellbeing. Beatrice always took me head-on without any assistance. And now that I know that she has at least three mutant creatures doing her dirty work, it was only a matter of time before I would have to succumb to Beatrice’s devices. I shuddered at the thought.
Turning my head to the city, I noticed a small flicker of the lights of the buildings near the park. Each window that had a light in it jittered, then appeared to be fine a moment later. My ears fell, hanging low as I watched this happen. That was a bit off-putting.
Then the flickering started to happen to the park lamps. They were bigger flickers than what was previously mentioned before. Each one flashed off and on until the one nearest to the forest did the same.
Oh no.
I tried to took off as fast as I could, but as soon as I landed, a forceful thrust was made to my face. It created a huge flash of light, quite similar to a strike of lighting. I was pushed backwards, using my movements to my advantage and scurrying behind a tree. However, that was short-lived as most of the trees in the surrounding area were scorched with only ashes remaining. I gulped, took a deep breath, and came out from where I was hiding.
Two looks up and down told me what I was dealing with.
“Oh, this is just wonderful. We’ve got a third girl. Beatrice must love sending them after me. Probably out of pity too,” I spat at the ground and swished my tail. “Alright, what’s your freaky power?”
Ramen blinked at Dagger, almost regretting attacking him in this fashion. Though just being with him in the same space for a couple of minutes, she thought in her mind that he actually was a really good person, despite what he had just said. But she had to get a grip. Beatrice wanted him, and she was tasked with the duty of retrieving him.
Taking a deep breath, she folded her hands in front of her and forced a small yet serious frown on her face.
“I’m part jellyfish,” she said coldly, as if she didn’t want to speak at all. If it weren’t for my keen hearing, I probably wouldn’t have heard her the first time. My head tilted in curiosity.
“Jellyfish? That’s… that’s awesome,” I said, straightening my head. Ramen, taken aback by this statement, looked to the side and blushed slightly, biting the knuckle of her index finger. Now she really didn’t want to hurt him… he seemed really… understanding. And accepting…
“Listen, I heard you were really strong. According to my knowledge, jellyfish are pretty strong just by themselves.” I grinned at the girl. “You don’t have to do this, you know. You are your own person, after all.” I approached her with caution, ultimately trying to reason with her. Ramen turned into an expressionless ghost, panicking as the dog boy got closer.
“Don’t you just want to be friends…?” I was a few feet away from the girl at this point. She blinked, snapping out of her blank stare. She frowned once more and heaved in a big breath, using all of her strength to surge electricity to her hands. From there, she forcefully pushed me away, sending violent electric shocks through the dog boy.
“YOWCH!” I screamed in agony after flying a couple feet back. I was shoved onto the ground, somewhat unable to move. That type of power really did a number on me.
“Oh my goodness…” I groaned heavily, struggling to even look up at her. “You and your… electricity… really pack a punch…” Ramen smiling lightly, seeing what she had accomplished.
“Are you all tired now, pups?” Ramen replied, treading slowly towards me. I growled lowly at her, getting back up and into a fighting stance.
“You can’t be using that electricity like that, little lady… that stuff hurts, you know…” Ramen’s eyes popped open, acting surprised from that statement. I sighed, admittedly struggling to continue standing.
“I see…” She put on another blank face, looking at me in a fake yet concerning manner. “Shall I amp it up a bit? I was only using about half of my power.” Her hair surged with more electricity, as did her ego.
I stuck my tongue out at her, now starting to feel a bit better as far as strength went.
“No no, that won’t be necessary.” I loosened my backpack off my shoulders and grabbed onto the straps, swinging the pack at her as a distraction. It hit her straight in the face, making her stumble backwards. I grinned and grasped hold of it again, getting a good head start on the run back into the city. Another lightning-like flash emitted behind me. She must be mad by now.
My strength isn’t where it should be, but I need to… get away… I swatted a tree branch away, allowing me to continue running.
I never usually ran from a fight. Taking on things that stood in my way would usually be my strong point. It must be that animal instinct of mine.
However, she was dangerous. I could tell. If one blow could knock me down… who knew how many I could take before…
An image popped into my head. It was my mother laying in the hospital bed, weakened by the blows of whatever she was inflicted with.
The amulet that I was wearing thumped against my chest as I ran. After thinking of that, it felt like it was thumping just a bit harder. I gritted my teeth and got on all fours, making me travel a bit faster.
No matter what… I have to get out of this mess… and I have to find… my mom…
I burst through the trees of the forest and back into the park, tripping and landing back into the hard pavement. I groaned at how I landed, but was happy that I wasn’t facing jellyfish girl anymore.
“My, my, my… so this is the lousy dog that we have to catch? What a waste of time.” My eyes shot upwards to look at a boy with white hair. He didn’t look too very happy to see me.
Wait a minute… THERE’S ANOTHER ONE?!
This was getting incredibly stupid. There couldn’t be another hybrid. There just couldn’t be…
“GRAH! I’M SICK OF THIS!” Still on the ground, I spun my body around, trying to use my legs to make the being in front of me fall. However, he noticed my actions and took to the sky, flipping and landing a couple few back.
I jumped to my feet, starting to seethe in disgust more than pain. My fists were clenched with rage. I have had enough of this.
First they come looking for me in the middle of the night, and they send four hybrids of… whatever to attack me… It was just aggravating at this point.
“I want to end this. NOW!” I yelled at the boy who stood across from me. All he could do is muster up a sly chuckle.
“Heh. You look so weak right now. Do dogs like to fly?” His tone turned dark. I gritted my teeth yet again, preparing for the worst.
My ears flapped up and down as tearing of cloth could be heard on the boy’s side of the park. His back was twitching violently until two massive bird-like wings shot out from behind him. I started shaking, as I wasn’t exactly prepared for that. He started to laugh maniacally, shooting towards me and grabbing me by the stomach. With me as cargo, he then rose into the air. I gasped, my backpack almost falling from my shoulders.
“HEY! LET ME… DOWN!” I scratched at the boy’s chest, trying to untangle myself from his grasp. That only made him compress his hands harder on my stomach.
“Oh yea, if you didn’t know, my name’s Bucko. I’m sure you’ve met my sister Ramen by now.” He continued to laugh, swinging me violently in his arms. As I continued to struggle, I saw a figure exit out of the forest. It was the girl.
And as predicted, she didn’t look happy.
I mustered enough strength to kick my legs towards his waist. From there, I released the biggest bark that I was holding back for quite a while. With that attack shaking him up, I kicked him again, and was soon free from him.
But now I was falling from really high up.
This was going to hurt.
I quickly aligned myself with the ground, figuring that I could just land on my feet.
“Urg… here it comes––WAH!” I shrieked, having myself suddenly being yanked to the side. I looked up to see Bucko with a tight grasp on my leg.
“I think I remember ringleader Beatrice saying something about taking you in alive. I personally want you dead, but…” He didn’t bother to continue his sentence, as it would have made me angrier. However, he did take the chance to swing me upwards even higher into the air. I flailed my arms around, trying to not get dizzy in the process. Bucko howled in laughter, thoroughly enjoying my suffering.
“THIS ISN’T A JOKE!” I screamed, aiming and landing a fist to his face. We both started to fall now into the forestry below. Bucko remained unmoving, as if the punch did a number on him. He faked it however, gliding back upwards to leave me sinking towards the ground.
My face was scratched by several branches as I made my way down, eventually touching ground on some hard foliage. My breath was immediately taken out of me, causing me to just lay there. I turned my head left towards the city. Loud sirens went ringing through my ears, making them fall flat on the ground. I spread out my arms and legs, closing my eyes soon after.
Sigh…
Oww…
