They arrived at the restaurant before the call ended, they walked into the building and caught an elevator to the 57th floor. The call finally ended as the elevator doors opened. He walked straight up to the host and said "Reservation for Corrence." showing his I.D. as he did. The host immediately grabbed the menus and led them to a table nestled in the corner of 2 windows. The view was wonderful. Ahnali chose a chair by one of the windows, a server pulled the chair out for her and pushed it in as she sat, her father did the same for her mother. The moment he was seated a server had brought the wine menu. Her father pointed at one and dismissed the server. Ahnali smirked at him cockily. He noticed her look and raised an eyebrow, "Do you want something?" She leaned in towards the table.
"This is one of your pet projects isn't it?" He glanced away clearing his throat.
"I'm sure I don't know what you mean."
"I mean, you're investing in this restaurant, and judging by the way everyone is acting, I'm guessing you invested a lot."
For just a moment she almost saw him switch to dad mode. Unfortunately the server returned with the wine and her father snapped back into boss mode. Ahnali was disheartened. She picked up the menu to hide her emotions. She listened to her mom chat with her dad about what to order. Ahnali, being upset with her father, looked over the menu and chose the most expensive steak, a loaded baked potato, a separate bottle of sparkling strawberry cider, and there wasn't a doubt that she would be getting the most expensive dessert as well. It's not like it would really dent his wallet, but she knew he would understand she was upset with him.
For most of the dinner her mom ran the conversations, but something she mentioned caught her dad's attention. It was just as dessert arrived that her dad brought up the worst topic possible. "Ahnali, you mother mentioned earlier you packed up your room. For college I presume." She nodded wary of his next question "I've come to realize you never told me what college you were accepted into, nor the major you have decided to pursue." he nonchalantly sipped his wine keeping eye contact with her as he set the glass down.
"Oh darling, we've had such a nice dinner, let's not talk about this right now." her mother tried to interject but his constant gaze on Ahnali told them he wouldn't budge. Ahnali sighed.
"I'm entering the liberal arts college, I'll be majoring in history with a minor in cultural studies." She kept her eyes locked with his, refusing to seem meek. He rubbed his temples before looking back up at her.
"Why..." he took a breath "Why would you waste your time on such a fruitless major? I've told you time and time again how pointless that field is. We've talked about this so many times I thought you finally understood, but I guess you just can't grow up."
She recoiled from his words "Dad, history is not fruitless, we can learn so much from the past, it's the only way to properly move forward." he shook his head
"History is for slackers who are incapable of learning anything more complicated than dates and names. In fact, that whole college is just a glorified middle school to give higher academic worth to slackers and morons." she bit her lip as he continued to belittle her college, barely holding back tears. "How can I give you my company if you major in such a worthless subject?"
"I told you, I don't want to be handed the company, I want to work my way up, learn how things are done at every level."
"Do you really think that would be possible with a major like that? Do you really think we would hire such a low quality person? You need to get rid of your childish ideas about how the world works and face reality, the only useful degrees are business, engineering, and science. For you, the only useful degree is business." he paused for a moment "You will switch you major or you will not be attending college." She looked desperately to her mom for help but her mom only shook her head.
"I can't believe you, why won't you let me follow my passion?" her tears flowed freely now, "I just want to find my own way for once, but you...you keep pushing me back down, controlling me. How and I supposed to 'grow up' if YOU won't let me!" She realized she had raised her voice and the other guests had began to murmur. She grabbed her clutch and briskly walked away.
"Ahnali" her mom called out.
"Let her go, she needs to realize she's wrong."
