I close my eyes as gravity takes over.
I guess this is another bruise for the books.
Battle scars for days.
Eve is right next to me, shoving me out of the way and I blink as I look at her long form pulled across the table and barley stopping me from possibly getting a concussion. The force of her push sends me flying to the ground instead of the corner of the table.
My mind drifts to those sappy vampire books that hormonal teenager girls seem to drool over and I do a mental face palm.
“Nice save!” Garret hollers.
“Whoa.” Samuel say’s with an impressed smile as I slip back into my seat and shoot daggers at the football player who is still looking my way.
“Hey bulldozer! Watch it next time!” I snap, dusting myself off.
He glares at me and I put my hands up and twist my face in mock terror. Okay so maybe not the best move, but what’s he going to do?
I turn to Eve.
“You have really good reflexes. Have you ever thought of being on the soccer team? We do need another goalie.” I say eyeing Eve suspiciously now.
“Sports just aren’t my thing.” She say’s with a shrug as Julian gives her a second glance.
He had seen the awesome save too. His eyes sparkle and I shake my head and turn to Samuel. His tall thin form leans over the table as he and Garret go into yet another one of their famous debates. I swear those two could talk till they literally ran out of air to breathe.
“I think you should talk to him.” I insist grabbing my bag and heading out to the hallway before they are full of kids pushing and shoving their way like one giant herd of cattle. I’m pretty sure I would be the one bursting into flames if I had to watch Eve ogle Julian any longer.
“So are you ready for Halloween?” Samuel asks as he jogs up next to me with a wide grin on his face, and his light brown eyes sparkling.
“I’m excited for the scare festival here.” I say with a shrug “But I haven’t decided on what I’m going to be for the costume contest.”
Samuel is all smile now
“I have a special one planned this year.” He says with a mischievous grin.
“So do I.” Eve says as she pops up out of nowhere “It’s going to be killer.”
I let a nervous laugh loose at Eve’s poor choice in words. OR maybe she was being serious?
Okay so maybe I’m just paranoid, after all Eve is my best friend. I really should give her the benefit of the doubt. She would never hurt a fly, well at least not too badly.
I let a string of mental curses fly at my imagination as it takes me down a little road of horrors.
“What are you going to be Garret?” I ask as he joins the rest of our group.
“A Space age centurion robot cyborg defender from my favorite TV show, Time Traveling Mecha droids in Space.” He responds nonchalantly.
The whole group goes silent.
“Uhh…Can I get that in plain English?”
“He’s going to be a robot with a big sword.” Samuel says with a smile.
“Yeah but saying it like that sound so uncool.” Garret complains.
Because it sounded soooo much cooler when he said it right?
I shrug and look over at Eve who is looking over at Julian who is eyeing Sandy Smithfield, the tall pretty blonde I have sixth period math class with.
“You should ask Julian if he’ll go with you to the festival and enter the couples costume contest.” I say mentally kicking myself as I give her a shove in his direction before Julian catches a whiff of Sandy’s intoxicating (and chocking) perfume. She bats her eyes at the nearest football player and he returns it with a cocky smile and an arm flex. Julian frowns.
“Maybe I will.” Eve says ceasing her opportunity and making her move.
It takes a minute or two for my brain to register what’s actually happening and I just stare.
Wait for it…
“Is she really going to do it?” Garret asked with wide eyes.
“I guess so.” I say baffled.
Eve flicks back her short light brown hair and looks back at me with a wink of her crystal blue eyes. Since when were her eyes so blue?
My cheeks burn with the heat of a thousand soccer moms experiencing bad customer service.
There is definitely something off about her.
“One small step for the shy, one giant leap for Eve Crewe.” Samuel says.
Eve has always been quite shy. Not that she doesn’t have her moments, but just walking up to the guy she has been trying to avoid and crush on at the same time blew my mind into tiny little bits.
Poof!
There went everything I thought I ever knew about her (And maybe a little bit of yesterdays math lesson).
“What the hell just happened?” I ask as I watch Eve giggle and Julian blush.
She twirls her hair a bit nervously and He nods his head with a wide grin on his face.
“I don’t know.” Sammy says agape.
Garret pulls us toward him with a stone cold face. I catch a whiff of the heavy cologne he uses to try and impress the girls that won’t even give him the time of day (poor guy). He grips his notebook nervously and I roll my eyes, knowing that look on his face.
Here it comes.
“Don’t look now, but I think Eve has been abducted by the evil woman cyborgs of the planet Seducaridian and replaced with a clone bent on seducing the male population and then exterminating them!”
I roll my eyes and pull away from a very serious looking Garret.
“Listen to what your saying Garret, how in the world dose that make any logical sense to you?”
“Maybe she just got tired of staring and finally decided to take your advice Isabelle.” Samuel says.
“But she never takes my advice!” I complain.
You see this is where I lose the boys, because they automatically assume that because Eve and I are so close that we automatically listen to whatever each other says. This is fundamentally not true.
We both can be hard headed and suborn.
The warning bell blares loudly overhead and rings in my ears as I look out over the entire cafeteria. Everyone seems to stand at the same time as the wild high schoolers begin their daily stampede back to class.
I see the cold merciless look in their eyes as they push and shove like a roaring mob in the streets during a riot and I take in a deep breath and quickly step out of the way.
Charge! I can almost hear everyone yell as they pour out of the cafeteria.
I’m on one side of the door and Eve and Julian stand across from me on the other side.
Yipeei-Ki -Yay.
“I’m being taken! Farewell comrades!” Garret calls as he disappears into the crowd and flows off toward his class.
Samuel smiles and easily slips into the crowd with a wave, leaving me alone, glaring through the chaos and catching momentary glimpses of Eve and Julian.
The warning bell rings, but I ignore it. Eve looks my way and I could have sworn I saw her leaning in toward Julian’s neck with a flirtatious giggle, but then more kids move in my way and I’m prevented from seeing anything else.
The crowd finally clears, but Eve is nowhere in sight. Only a grinning Julian is left leaning up against the wall.
Definitely a vampire, I think as I trek to my next class.
