Basil was miserable, he and Pip had set off on their little adventure five hours ago. The bus seats were extremely uncomfortable and Pip would not shut up. All Basil wanted to do was sleep until they got to the town where they would need to stop. It was called Glendale and it was the only town for miles, according to the map Basil purchased in order to navigate where they were going. He honestly didn't know how pip was going to find his way without Basil. He couldn't read a map to save his life. He probably would've gotten lost in the forest and died of starvation or dehydration. Yes, Basil reasoned, if he hadn't of come than Pip would surely die.
This was what Basil said every so often when he contemplated whether or not it was a good idea to leave Pip's annoying ass behind and head back home.
"What do you think we're gonna find?" Pip turned to basil, who's had his head leaned back and his eyes closed, clearly attempting to sleep.
"Wha?" Basil replied back groggily, he had just finally managed to fall asleep and Pip just had to wake him up.
"Well, you have to be curious about what we're gonna find. I mean it is in the middle of the forest."
"You wanna know what I think?"
"Yes I do, that's why I asked."
"I think we're going to be killed and eaten by bears before we make it to wherever this place is?"
Pip laughed, "Don't be silly, its the middle of winter, the bears are hibernating. As are most animals at the moment."
Basil groaned wanting this conversation to be over, "Well then we'll freeze to death."
Pip held up a duffle bag, "That's why I brought extra jackets, blankets, and sweatpants."
"You really thought this through huh?" Basil had no idea Pip had put this much effort into the planning. The only part he had a part in was transportation, anything else was up to PIp to think of. Basil didn't want to have anything to do with the planning. He didn't even want to come on this stupid trip, to begin with.
And although he cared a whole lot about Pip, even like him to an extent- he was still contemplating rolling down the buses window and jumping out.
"Listen, Pip, you know I love you. But so help me god if you don't shut up I will fling you through the window."
Pip smiled endearingly, "Okay." He knew Basil would never go through with any threat he made because he cared too much about Pip to harm him in any way. Also, he wasn't the violent sort, it wasn't like him period.
So for the next four hours, Pip stayed silent and Basil, finally, was able to get some rest.
But before they knew it they were in Glendale and it was time for them to embark on their journey through the woods and to the the the coordinates lead to.
Basil stepped off the bus first and Pip followed closely behind carrying three bags full of food and extra clothes. Basil still couldn't fathom why Pip thought it necessary to bring so many supplies. And he was already dreading the time where Pip will grow tired of carrying all of their stuff and the burden would fall onto Basil-literally.
"Are you sure you wanna bring all that stuff with us? It's a five-mile walk to get to the spot." Five miles wasn't a lot to Basil but to Pip, little five foot three Pip who's never worked a day in his life. It would be a sight, to say the least.
"No, I'll be fine," Even as he was saying this Pip was already losing his grip on the bags in his hands.
Basil sighed, and took the biggest bag off Pip's hands and wrapped around his shoulder. Pip smiled sheepishly.
"Thanks"
"Let's just go, it's going to take forever to walk there, especially with you here."
"Pip scowled, "What's that supposed to mean."
"It means you're short and slow and it's going to take a long ass time to get there. So let's go."
"I'm not that short," Pip mumbled to himself.
Basil scoffed, "Okay, keep telling yourself that." And with that last remark, Basil set off from the bus stop and into the forest, he took long fast strides and Pip had to run to catch up.
"Hey, wait for me." Basil slowed down enough to let Pip catch up and together they embarked on the most wonderful of adventures, at least to Pip. To BAsil it was more like impending doom. But to each their own.
"Can we take a break?"
They'd only been walking for an hour and a half and already Pip was trying to take a break.
"We haven't been walking for that long." Was Basil would say on the matter.
"But my feet hurt, please?"
Basil turned around and looked at Pip's pleading eyes for all of two seconds before he dropped his bag and set up camp.
"Okay, but we can't take too long. I want to get there before sundown." Basil did not want to be wandering around the woods at night, even if Pip reassured him that most of the animals would be hibernating. He didn't want to take any chances.
Immediately after Basil gave the okay for them to stop Pip walked over and sat on the log he spotted when they first walked through this area and gave him the idea to ask for a break. He honestly didn't think Basil would say yes. But he was happy he did.
Basil set down the bags, he was carrying all of them at this point.
"Do you want something to eat?" Basil asked, searching through the bags to find the food Pip undoubtedly packed.
"Yes please, there are some crackers in the blue bag."
Basil stared at Pip, "Your thirsty, no?
"Yes"
"The crackers are gonna dry out your mouth, and then you're going to drink all of your water too soon. and I'm not going to share mine with you." That was a lie, he would Pip drink all of his water if he asked nice enough.
"Oh, okay, well I think I put some fruit in there." Basil looked around in the bag and found an apple and gave it to Pip.
"Thanks" He took the apple and sipped water between nibbling on it. Basil sighed and relented grabbing Pips crackers and pulling a couple out of the bag and handing them to Pip before putting the rest back in the bag.
"That's all you get, no more."
Pip smiled and took the crackers, inhaling them on the spot and taking huge gulps of water after. And no surprise, he finished off his water.
"Told you."
Basil finally sat back after grabbing the prepacked sandwich Pip made for him.
"Oh god I'm so excited," Pip was practically vibrating in his seat, "Aren't you?"
Basil took a bite out of his sandwich, "No."
"Oh come on, you're not even a little bit excited," Pip moved closer and leaned on Basil, "Like not even a teensy weensy bit?"
Basil finished his sandwich and took a gulp of water, "Am I excited to walk into my potential death? No, I'm not."
Pip wrapped his hands around Basil's bicep, "Come on Bay, that's half the fun. Who doesn't like to risk their lives every now and then?"
"Me"
Pip smiled unwrapping his hands and leaned back. Basil looked down at his arm frowning.
"We should start moving," Basil got up and put all the trash and water bottles back in the bag, and putting the rest on his shoulders before beginning to walk again.
"Okay, let's go." Pip gets up with newfound energy and skips ahead of Basil.
They walk the rest of the way without stopping, in only about three hours. Which was surprising Basil could've sworn it would've taken twice that amount, especially with Pip there. About halfway the rest of the way Pip got too tired and Basil ended up carrying him the rest of the way. And it was not fun. By the time they got to their destination Basil back was hurting so much to the point where he just wanted to lay down right there and go to sleep. Which is what Pip did, just on his shoulders instead of the ground.
Basil shook Pip to wake him up, "We're here."
Pip woke up and groggily looked around, "We are?"
Pip hopped off basil's back and looked around. They were surrounded by tall green trees, and to the left Pip could see the most beautiful piece of nature ever created. A waterfall. It ran from the top of off the cliff onto a cliff and into what seemed like a bottomless hole by Pip's feet.
"So what was supposed to be here exactly, what were you expecting?"
Pip looked on into the hole, "I don't know. The note didn't exactly give us a time to meet here. I think we're supposed to just figure it out."
"Maybe not, maybe I read the coordinates wrong," Basil looked down at the map he was holding.
"You've never made a mistake before, I don't think you'd make one conveniently when we actually need it," Pip walked around the waterfall climbing up onto the first cliff. Basil looked up at Pip and ran over to the bottom of the small cliff.
"What are you doing, you're gonna fall and break your back or something," Basil climbed up behind Pip and grabbed his waist to make sure he doesn't fall.
"I'm trying to get to the top to get a better view, see something we might not be able to see from the ground."
Basil laughed, "And you could find a dryer way of getting up." Basil looked up at the top of the waterfall, the water hit the ground right by his feet soaking both him and Pip.
Pip looked down and shuffled his feet, "I didn't think about that." Of course, he didn't. Basil thought to himself.
"Let's get down before one of us slips."
Pip looked around the waterfall and surrounding hill, "Do you see another way up?"
Basil looked around the surrounding hill was too steep and smooth to gain any purchase to climb up.
"I guess not. Let's just be really careful. Okay?"
"Okay"
Pip turned around and started to climb the rock wall next to the main water flow. Basil stepped up behind him to keep him from falling. But to no avail.
One of the indentations in the stone was too slippery and when Pip grabbed it and slipped falling backward. he yelped and hit Basil and he began to fall backward. Basil managed to grab onto a branch hanging off a nearby tree he managed to grab in his frantic attempts at grabbing wildly.
But Pip was not so lucky he kept falling, all the way into the "bottomless" hole at the end of the waterfall.
"Pip," Basil screamed and tried to grab Pip but it was too late. He fell into the hole and his screams faded and Basil was left listening to the sound of the water hitting the ground.
"Oh my god, oh my god," Basil crawled to the edge of the cliff and tried to see into the hole, "Pip," Basil screamed, "Pip if you can hear me say something.
A kind of squeak sounded from somewhere. Basil crawled further off the cliff and angled his body down to try to get as close as possible to see if he could hear the sound again.
"Pip?"
A shout sounded from the hole, almost an echo, a whisper of what was once there. Basil shifted his body and his hand slipped, and he fell into the hole as well.
He fell for what seemed to be ages before he finally hit.. not ground something softer. Everything was still black and he couldn't see anything. And he couldn't move either.
Basil began to panic and hyperventilate. He felt like he couldn't breathe. He felt like he did all those years ago. When he first realized his mom was never coming back for him. Helpless. He felt like he could cry.
"Pip?...Piiiiip? "Basil tried to call for his friend once more but he was beginning to lose consciousness, "Whath going on?"
His eyelids began to droop, "Huh, wah"
He finally passed out.
